Dec 10, 2010

Mac :: Mac Pro First Generation Graphics Card - Dual External Drive

Oct 5, 2008

After reading through several pages of post's on here I am still at a stand still on upgrading my original macpro 2.66ghz quad core. The reason I am upgrading the stock card is I cant handle the grainy look on my photos after using my same moniter with my new macbook pro. Also I am going to be using my bootcamp vista side to play bluray and hd dvds. I recently purchased the new buffalo dual external drive but the images are blury and after a hd video test my graphics card failed misserably. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to spend around 275-300 shipped. My lcd display supports hdmi and all recent standards.

Mac Pro :: Next Generation GPU

Jan 4, 2011

Will the next generation Apple compatible GPU probably be the ATI HD 6870? will it be the cost of the current generation ATI HD 5870? Any chance there will be a powerful next generation Nvidia gaming card coming out instead or along with the ATI card?

OS X :: Finding Mac Pro Generation I Am Using?

Feb 7, 2009

I'm new to the forums and to macs. I'm having serious video card issues and everything I've read on the subject suggests that the card has heat sink issues and that a new card is required. I'm out of warranty and was just wondering if I had to go through the apple site to purchase a new card or could I just figure out what models are compatible with my mac and purchase one from a retailer or ebay?

The card I'm using now is ATI Radeon X1900 XT and is PCIe bus. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I have a mac pro that I purchased in 2007.

If there's any additional information I need to post just let me know.

OS X :: Moving HDD From 2nd To 5th Generation?

Jun 3, 2009

I have a 2nd gen MB and recently got a 5th gen MB (white) with NVidia adapter. I moved my HDD from 2nd gen to 5th hoping all would be fine. Although system seems to work fine, I have problems on boot (command line text appears). I made HDD verification with DU, all seems to be fine. There are many problems with Disk Permissions and they can not be somehow repaired.

What would you suggest to move my HDD in the best way? Shall I try to solve boot problem? Or shall I just format the HDD on 5th and restore the system with Time Machine or sth?

Mac Pro :: HD4890 On 1st Generation

Jul 23, 2009

i've done my homework and searched this forum and i actually read most of the posts that cover this thing. The thing is, everything inside my mac pro kciks ass expect my gpu... its the x1900 which is really, really bad, at least for gaming; bad fps, high temps, bad usage of memory or memory leaks for no reason, MANY new games have bugs that are related ONLY to this card (like gta iv) and also it gets all dusted so easilly. So anyway, i was looking at the HD4890. I understand that there's not even a mac edition of it (that wouldn't really work on a 1st gen mac pro anyway right?), but i was thinking if i could use a flashed one. The thing is, i've heard a lot of people talking about another card, the HD4870, which i think has a similar rom with the HD4890, but of course i could be wrong. So about the 4870, i heard people saying they got it to work, for bothed a flashed pc version and the mac edition... could anyone confirm this? If those cards do work, i cant think of why the 4890 couldn't.

Mac Pro :: What's 1st Generation Worth

Oct 29, 2009

I am considering replacing my 1st Gen Mac Pro with a new iMac quad core 7i and I would like to get an idea of how much my Mac Pro is worth before I consider selling it. Places like Gazelle say its worth over $1500 but I find that hard to believe. I believe its the 2.2GH or 2.26 GH but I have upped the Ram to 12GB and I have 2 x 250GB drives and 2x320GB drives in there, also added Blue-tooth and I have all original boxes, cables, etc. I even have a newer Wireless keyboard and mouse that I will send along with it. It has Leopard and iLife 09/iWork 09. And the stock 256K nVidia Video.

Hardware :: Intel's 2nd Generation SSD Are Here

Jul 21, 2009

SSD prepare to go mainstream

The GREAT news is that the new Intel SSD controllers are Halogen free. It appears that Apple has avoided Intel SSD because they would hamper Apple's Green initiatives. Those problems are over and hopefully we'll see Intel SSD as options for Macs late this year or early next year.

80GB now is $225 and latency for writes has been reduced

Well that's about what I needed to see. I'm skipping a 320GB Scorpio Black and moving to a 80GB SSD. I really want that performance that only a SSD gives you. I'll move my mass storage to an externally connected FW800 drive.

MacBook Pro :: Next Generation Of MacBooks?

Oct 23, 2010

I know that there are topics asking what is going to be in the next Mac upgrade all the time, but what I wanted to ask you is more about Steve's "The next generation of MacBooks" quote.

It seems that the Back to the Mac philosophy will not apply just to the Air but will go further on the other laptops series.

I definetely see the HDD disappear from the next gen of MacBooks to give space to the SSD cards.

So far all the MacBook can get up to 500GB HDD and the Pros have also the option up to 512GB SDD.

However even if this is quite predictable I would like to know your opinion on another matter: DVDs.

Will Apple gamble on removing the DVD drive or this could be too early?

Hardware :: Which Generation Of Airport I Am Using?

I am curious from anyone who has used the Airport Extreme Base Station. Right now I could get a previous generation Airport of TC for a fair savings over the current generation. I am planning to use this in my condo and I wanted to know if anyone thought the extra benefits of a guest network and dual wifi is worth it. Would there be a benefit if I don't really need a guest network?

Mac Pro :: Possible To Swap HDD To A Newer Generation Mp?

Apr 20, 2009

I have a first generation mac pro (Rev B I believe), and am currently having some issues with it.

If I decide to purchase a newer generation mac pro, would it be possible to jsut pull my current hard drive, put it in the new one, and have it work? I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop CS3, a 2001 version of Word:Mac and Excel:Mac, Photo Mechanic 4.51 and Transmit and Toast Titanium as the main programs I use. I can not presently find any of these install disks, so I'd like to try avoiding re-installing the software if I can avoid it.

The economy being what it is, I am trying to save money where I can...but I need my workstation to work. Right now I am already looking at replacing the Vid Card in my 1st gen mac pro, and hate thinking that purchasing another $350 ATI X1900 card from Apple is my best option. If a newer generation mac pro is better for me in the long run, it might be $2k well spent.

IMac :: New GPU - Improvement Over Last Generation?

MacBook Pro :: Why Next Generation Should Use ATI 5830 GPU

Feb 18, 2010

Here's a comparison of an upconverted dvd on a 7 inch screen, versus a blu ray on a 7 inch screen. The 15" HP Envy laptop, which is basically identical to the Macbook Pro in terms of dimensions, design and power consumption, opts to use the i5 processor, 1920x1080 resolution and a blu ray drive alongside a 1GB ATI 5830 GPU in the high end models. So the next MBP using a weaker GPU than basically a MBP knock off already offers would make the MBP seem poorly planned out and poorly designed.

Hardware :: Which Time Capsule Generation Is Better

I am considering a Time Capsule. I am currently using a linksys e1000 and I'm not thrilled with its range. I have heard the time capsule has great range and the benefit of the external drive is great; as opposed to just getting an Airport Extreme Base Station (am I correct in that choice?).

The apple store has refurbished previous generation, 1TB for $179 vs refurbished current generation, 1TB for $219. Why should I pay the extra 40 bucks? Are they more stable? Better signal?
