Jun 4, 2009I had an image from an older macbook (10.5.4) and I put it in a newer MacBook which I assume was could not boot as far back as 10.5.4, so I updated it by booting 10.5.6 on an external and running the combo 10.5.7 update on the MacBook's internal drive. I boot and after staying on a blue screen for a while, it goes black and shows me a command prompt and I can see all the processes starting up. then it goes back to blue and works normally. On shutdown, I see the prompt again. I cannot boot into safe mode or single user mode for some reason. When holding down the s and shift it still does the same thing. I can however still use option to boot from a different drive.
The computer runs perfectly normally once booted. I just don't want to see the command line stuff. So is there some way to stop it, or hide it?

Jul 5, 2006what is the .DS_Store file that is on my desktop and in many of my folders? can i move it, i have tried dragging it to a different folder, but it just pops up again, and it makes my desktop look all untidy!

I usually keep my desktop empty and use it to store stuff I'm going to process in the next hour anyway.
Sometimes my desktop is absolutely empty, but when I navigate to the following path: UserDesktop, the files do show up.

Nov 18, 2007This is the first time I try since my leopard install and once I hit Cmd-Shift-3 the screen freezes for 10 sec before having the screen shot on my desktop. On Tiger it was immediate, on my GF leopard MB it is als super fast.

Jan 25, 2010I am familiar with CMD M combination to minimize screens. This is not doing the trick. I experience that I have to use this command several times as some programs just want minimize based on one command. It requires that one makes the programs active by clicking the cursor and than use cmd M again.
Is there yet another command that results in a an immediate desktop view.

Sep 13, 2009I have had 10.6 on my early 2008 macbook for about 2 weeks. One of the first things i noticed was the fact that my hardrive that 10.6 is installed on is not showing up on my desktop like it used to in 10.5. Has any one else had this problem. I have also updated to 10.6.1 but that did not sort the problem out.

Jun 22, 2009i woke up this morning and my western digital external HDD icon is not showing up on the desktop. I currently use this as a time machine and it has been working for about a year. This has happened before and just a simple re-plug of the usb does the trick, but i have been working on this for hours and for some reason it is not showing up. I have unplugged everything and re plugged them back in and nothing is working. i have checked the disk utility and the disk utility recognizes it. but i still dont know why it doesn't have an icon. i am running a repair disk on the external HDD now and it and it has been "repairing" for about 30 min now. i have tried to backup but it is not working either.
OS X :: White Arrow Showing Up On Desktop / When I Hit The Shift Key
Dec 3, 2009Everytime I hit the shift key, a white, outlined arrow (with a drop shadow) shows up on the mid-upper right part of the desktop. If I hit shift twice, it stays there... if I hit capslock, nothing.
I looked in universal access, and nothing glared out... a google search didn't turn up anything (right away).can someone quickly clue me in as to what is causing this?

May 30, 2012I am trying to get pictures off an SD card that I have in a card reader, plugged into the USB port. I'm not finding an icon for this anywhere! I've tried 2 card readers, as well as plugging my camera right into the USB port, and none of them show up! It was working just find 2 days ago, and now it's not. The USB port shows up in System Profiler, but not in Disk Utility.Â

OS X :: Shutdown / Restart System - Stuck On Showing Desktop
Mar 8, 2008I'm a rather new Mac user (it's been about 6 months since I bought my new aluminum iMac). Lately, I've been experiencing difficulties in shutting down my system, or even restarting it. I should probably note that I'm using 10.5.2 Sometimes, when I try to perform a system shutdown/restart, the OS gets to a point where only my desktop is shown but nothing happens (occasionally the beach ball keeps rolling, but not always).
At that point, (as far as I know) there's nothing I can do to restart/shutdown the system, besides pressing the "power" button for several seconds until the power goes down. When similar things happened on my old XP machine, I would just use CTRL ALT DEL and force quit all applications - until shutdown succeeds. There was never a scenario where I needed to cut the power in order to get the system to shut down. On OS X when this situation occurs, the CMD ALT ESC combo doesn't seem to work.
OS X :: USB Photoreaders Not Showing On Desktop / Disk Utility Seems Unable To See Them
Oct 11, 2009I have two USB cardreaders. One is (I think) a USB 1, unbranded. The other is a USB 2 branded Seitec). Our cameras both use Sony Memory Stick Pro Duos). They both of worked with both my wife and my iMacs under 10.5.11. Both machines (hers from 2006, mine an Intel Core 2 Duo from 2007) have been happily upgraded to SL 10.6.1... but now the cardreaders work with her machine, but not with mine. They don't mount on the desktop. I have tried various combinations ... attaching them through keyboard /back of iMac, powered USB hub. Sometimes they are recognised by System Profiler, sometimes not! Disk Utility seems unable to see them at all, so I can't get it to mount them.
However, when I leave the card in my camera and connect it direct to the keyboard (or whatever socket I choose!) the computer recognises the camera immediately I switch it on, and downloads quite happily

Nov 2, 2009So I just received my Nehalem Mac Pro today, and I successfully installed three new hard drives in it, and I can access all four of my drives in Finder, but NONE of them (including the Boot Drive that came with the computer) are showing up on the desktop! I can't figure out why so I thought I'd ask here.
Oddly enough, my Firewire 800 Drive shows up on the desktop. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? And how to fix it?

Mar 28, 2012I have an external hard drive (2T Newertech ministack). We had a power outage the other day. Even though the drive is on it no longer appears on the desktop. I went to Disk Utility and see if it could be repaired but the drive is not even showing up there. Does this mean the ministack was fried by the outage or is there another way I can save it? And yes, the finder preferences are on for external drives to show up on desktop.

Apr 25, 2012I have a Olympus memory card for my camera (MS card) and cannot fit it into the memory card slot of my MacBook Pro. I have used a Logik card reader (which is compatable with Mac) and connected it into a USB port. My reader has a green light to say it is connected but I cannot find it anyway on my finder or desktop. Does anyone have any ideas where to find the card reader on my Mac?

May 8, 2012Yesterday I accidentally opened Terminal and didn't realize it until after I typed into it and hit a few returns. I thought nothing of it until today. When I started up all of the desktop icons were ghosted or transparent. The Dock apps look fine, and everything seems to work OK. There are odd .DS_Store files everywhere and other files that start with a dot that I've heard are supposed to be invisible.
I've looked around and found out that it's a Finder problem that can be corrected by typing something into Terminal. That's how I realized I must have messed it up yesterday when I accidentally typed into the Terminal. What code I need to enter into Terminal to restore it to the default settings. I have a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 with OS 10.4.11, and other than this problem it works great.

Jun 13, 2012Recently I've been having a problem with the way my icons are arranged. It's like the screen its moved a little bit up. There's an image to show you how it looks like when it happens (because it happens sometimes, I dunno what I causes). Also, when my mac enter sleeping mode, the login screen its moved a little bit up too.

Feb 8, 2009I'm new to this forum, but need help with my external harddrives (WD Pasport 250GB). I can find it in my disk utility, but not on my desktop. I had WD send me a new drive, but now I do not know how to transfer the info from the old drive. Its not a dead drive- its obviously turned on and connected, but I can't mount it to my desktop. Any advice??

Jun 13, 2009On my old macbook, I installed vista and everything worked fine. I just did that on my new macbook pro. It runs fine and all, but the Bootcamp HD isn't showing up on my desktop under my Macintosh HD. I went do disk utility and it verifiys the disk, but repair just does this:
I try to mount the image, but it fails and wants me to try repairing, which as you see in the picture doesn't work. Any ideas?
