Can i insert a harddrive on my Mac Pro while it is running ?
Just don't want to shock myself or the like.........
I just bought a 64 GB Lexar 3.0 USB drive. When I insert the USB drive into my two day old MacBook Air it promptly shuts down my wifi. I have tried another wifi with the identical result.
Info:

My 2.8MP early 2008 with one optical drive is having some random issues iwth it.
ive only used the optical drive a few times however one instance it wont open for the drive to come out NOW, it wont shut when i insert a disc.
i recently purchased a second hand iMac, everything is working fine on it apart from one wierd problem when i insert a DVD into the superdrive it decides to eject the disk by itself, and if I insert a CD it plays fine. Im on 10.7.4 (os x lion)

I'm replacing this hard drive but all I get is a blue screen when I insert the original CD.

I've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly. At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there. Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive. I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke). So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen.
So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive? Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time? I mean they never go off. Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail. Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc drive

I set up a 32g partition for windows xp pro. Loaded the disk and formated the partition to FAT. Hold option at startup and load windows. Upon loading windows i get the following message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." I have tried leaving the xp disk in, I have tried taking it out before loading windows and putting it in afterwords, nothing works. I can not eject disk while in windows.

I've read that Early 2008 model MacBook Pros can boot into the Hardware test while pressing the D key on the keyboard without the disc in the drive (or was it the F2 key). I've also read that lots of people succeed doing it. Why does my MBP not do that?
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy 27" iMac that I purchased on Dec 8 2008 had a HD failure. I was running bootcamp and Win 7 and thought I had a virus but the Apple Store geek said the HD was kaput. This has to be a record for short lived HD's on a Mac. And no, I didn't have extended warranty. Anyone else have such a bad experience? My MBP is chugging along and I'm pretty certain I will NOT partition the HD on the Mac when I get it back tomorrow.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI need some help figuring out how to properly back up data using my 27" i7. The Time Capsule route supposedly doesn't support BootCamp, and I am definitely concerned about backing up both partitions on my drive. What are the best options? I'd really like to avoid getting any special software to make it work (someone told me about Retrospect or something like that, but I'm unfamiliar with it), but I'm open to suggestions.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a Power Mac G4 from a friend. I realized i can store all my content on there and just access it remotely from my 2011 Macbook Pro. While my G4 was running remore desktop it froze. So i held the power button to shut it off and when i restarted it all i get is the Apple logo on the gray screen, and i t wont start in safe mode. I forgot to mention i started togo throught the G4 and take his name off and ad mine (hard drive name and user names). I took the hard drive out and attached it to my MacBook Pro. The hard drive works fine,And i can access everything. I tried running disc utility on the G4 hard drive with my MacBook Pro. and it said ALOT.

I have:
- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive
- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3
When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.
How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?
I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

My Imac has been running super slow and the hard drive will not stop writing. Current Specs running 10.7.3, 2.8 Ghz Intel i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. I have had it for less than a year bought refurbed from the online store, I wiped the hard drive once before but it did not help at all, I am currently running parallels but the problem existed before that. I also have an external hard drive but makes no difference in whether it is hooked up or not

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 15" MB Pro, 2.66, 8gb ram, Intel Core i7 processor, OS 10.6.8, a year or so old.I'm having trouble with a Lacie d2 Quadra v3 7200rpm drive. At first I thot it was the drive but now believe it's something with the mac since when hooked up to my old MB Pro I don't have this problem. When copying from the Lacie to another drive and sometimes when unmounting I get a message saying it can't unmount because it is in use by another application. But I am not running any other application, at least not knowlingly.
I would guess that a program(s) is accessing the drive without my knowledge (and perhaps performing indexing operations?) and I would like to find out which program(s), and how I can stop it.When I go to Preferences>Accounts>Login Items I see VMWare Fusion Helper (unchecked), and iTunesHelper and CNQL2405_Button Manager (both checked). Could any of these be responsible? I wonder if iTunes being used to backup my iPhone has created a problem, or separately if iCloud, Life or iSync or another app that could index might be creating issues.
I am just a new user of macbook air. My macbook don't read the usb neither it's in the disk utility.

Brought a new 4TB thunderbolt G-Drive. And, my iMac doesn't see it and the hard drive doesn't even power up. Tested at Apple before I brought it home.
maybe I haven't been paying attention but my HD seems to have a misc 50-150 GB of stuff on there that didn't seem to be there before, nor can I account for what it is. I have opened up the HD and gotten "info" on all folders there. The total amount of storage does not equal what the HD tells me I have. I get "info" on the HD and it says 300 GB used (20 GB left). The folders and size are as follows as listed on my HD:
Users: 154.46 GB
World of Warcraft (ashamed faced): 21.28 GB
Applications: 3.68 GB
Library: 6.34 GB
System: 4.49 GB
Limewire: 49.4 MB
Incompatible Software (?): 1.6 MB
Developer: 165 KB
iTunesShut: 479 KB
For a grand total of: 190.39 GB or so (not including the 50 mb or 644 kb) I'll include what is on my desktop as well (I assume it is already included on the list above but just incase).........
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my mac. I'm using bootcamp assistant to try and partition my hard drive, but it gives me an error saying it cannot partition it because of unmovable files or something along those lines. Is there any way to get around it, and if I do use my OSX install disk and run disk utility to repair the drive will my files be deleted?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 2011 macbook that has a motherboard that is broken, and that macbook has a terabyte Hard drive that was put in about a year ago after a broken hard drive was removed. Now I have bought a brand new macbook same model and I was advised by the apple store to take the old TB hard drive and swap it with the one in the new computer. I just want to know if by doing this I'm going to loose all of my files and programs by just swapping them. I have no back up anywhere just the files on the hard drive in the broken computer. So am I going to loose all of the files on the hard drive when I swap it? or will I have to get it backed up some how? They are both running Mavericks
