Intel Mac :: Is Running Slow And The Hard Drive Will Not Stop?

Apr 17, 2012

My Imac has been running super slow and the hard drive will not stop writing.  Current Specs running 10.7.3, 2.8 Ghz Intel i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  I have had it for less than a year bought refurbed from the online store, I wiped the hard drive once before but it did not help at all, I am currently running parallels but the problem existed before that.  I also have an external hard drive but makes no difference in whether it is hooked up or not

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Slow Running Mac While Having Free Space In Hard Drive?

Jan 31, 2012

My mac is slow. Obvious points are covered. Maximum RAM installed; All apple software updates downloaded and permissions repaired after each download.Activity Monitor shows no obvious 'hogs'.Hard Drive (250GB) has almost 50GB free I am considering some sort of clean up using something like ONYX but feel that the hardware /software package should be almost self maintaining.15 years using Macs, since OS5 but not minded to look under the hood very often, since that is what brought me to Apple in the first place.

Intel Mac :: Running Constantly Hot - Changed The Hard Drive But It Is Running Hot?

Mar 5, 2012

I've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly.  At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there.  Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive.  I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke).  So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen.

So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive?  Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time?  I mean they never go off.  Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail.  Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc drive

Intel Mac :: Wifi Slow After Changing Hard Drive?

Jun 4, 2012

So i opened up my mid 2007 iMac and changed the hard drive and cpu, and its all up and running correctly with a clean install of Lion, except that my wifi seems to be slow! It connects to the network and loads webpages slowly, and doing a system update it says it'll take 700hours to download the 1.5gb combined update... I then tilted back the screen and the connection speed improved and i managed to download the update in a couple of hours... so still a poor speed... Im guessing I either left the wifi card poorly connected or got the main and aux antenna cables wrong way round, does anyone know where the white and black cable go? Or which is which? Also, what do these cables connect to (the end not connected to the wifi card)?

Intel Mac :: 2009 20" Slow/Unresponsive Hard Drive Access

Mar 11, 2012

I stopped by a friends house to try and help them with an early 2009 20" iMac that started stalling on startup (sometimes before their login screen, and sometimes after).  The computer didn't exhibit this behaviour at all, then overnight, it behaved as stated and never once allowed them to get far enough to launch an application or open the Finder.

When I arrived, rebooted and held down Command + Option + P + R, but it had no effect on the problem.   I then booted off the original OSX discs and ran Disk Utility.  At first it seemed slow to complete, but before long (a few minutes) the Verify Disk finished without any errors.  Next, I attempted "Repair Disk Permissions" and noticed that this was taking a very long time, +10 minutes.  That said, it did complete without any problems, albiet slowly.

Unfortunately, this did not allow me to login, and I never made it to the login screen.  Being a close friend, I offered to take the computer home and try to copy as much data as I could through Target Disk Mode over Firewire.

My first attempt to copy her Home directory got 25% of the way through the roughly 4 GB of data, then stopped.  I rebooted and tried again, with even less success than before (I could barely access Folders let alone copy after the reboot).  I attempted to recreate the "successful" attempt by unplugging the computer and letting it sit for a few hours.  Sure enough, I was able to copy data from the Target Disk Mode mounted drive, but after about 1 GB of copying the access to the hard slowed to a crawl (a few kilobytes per minute) then halted completely.

I've repeated the above process to slowly but surely copy the entire 4 GB of home directory data, and am about to call it quits after salvaging what was important to her.

Question:  Is this the sign of a failing hard drive close to the end of its life, or is this something potentially more serious with the logic board?  I've only come across a stubborn drive like this with an external drive that was close to failure, and assume this is the case.

Intel Mac :: IPhoto Library Transfer To External Hard Drive Very Slow

Apr 10, 2012

I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow.

I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive.  The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours.  I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up.

When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster.  Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found.

Intel Mac :: Computer Is Running Very Slow?

Apr 2, 2012

My computer is running very slow.  Beach ball all the time. I have about 35mb hard drive free space and 4 MB RAM.  I monitor with Activity Monitor.  Everytime I open a program, like Safari, Adobe, Activity Monitor shows they use up to 99% CPU.  It goes downafter a little while to a small perecntage, until I try to do something with them.  Then many times, it will jump back up to high %CPU and give me the beachball and run very slow.  This is a new thing.  Does anyone know what may be the problem with my computer?

Intel Mac :: 2008 Running Very Slow?

May 23, 2012

My 2008 iMac started running very slowly yesterday, taking ages to start up and showing the spinning wheel on the desktop for ages making it impossible to do anything. It particularly doesn't like running iTunes or Spotify and got worse when I plugged my iPod in. Another thing I can think of is I downloaded an album from iTunes yesterday and this seemed to coincide with it having a breakdown. Chrome is also running slow and I get frequent unresponsive script messages.

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have upgraded to iTunes 10.6.1. I recently installed the Flashback removal software.

Intel Mac :: Its Running Super Slow

Jun 16, 2012

Got a 21.5 inch iMac desktop summer of 2010. I think it is the base model. All other info I can't get to on "about my mac" because my Mac is running like frozen molasses.

Anyway, last few days I thought the internet/Safari was running kind of slow. Pages would load, I'd get stuff done, but I just thought it was being glitchy. Then last night, my Mac would all out freeze. Rebooting took at least 5 minutes, and it doesn't matter what I try to use (chrome, firefox, safari), pages just won't load at all or freeze if I am able to make it to Google/Facebook/etc. Now the computer just sits at the blue screen part of the startup, and I had to just finally hard shutdown since I am not getting anywhere to even run a virus scan.

Intel Mac :: Running Very Slow And Sometimes Won't Start

Jul 1, 2012

I have an iMac intel from 2009.. the computer is used only for simple internet exploring, word documents, emails... etc. The hard drive has 140GB of free space, and I have erased the free disk space with 1 pass. The computer runs SO slow to the point where it's almost unusable. To me, it feels like a memory issue, even though the programs that are used require very minimal memory... I tried ejecting the RAM stick blowing on it and popping it back in, but no luck...  It has 1GB of ram total.

Intel Mac :: Slow While Running Logic Studio?

May 28, 2012

My imac - Running - 10.5.8 Processor - 2.5 GHz Intel core duo 2 Memory - 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM I run logic studio on it in my studio. For a good few months its been always having the ''system overload'' message come up on logic so ive been using my laptop instead but i really need to use my imac now as ive just finished builing my studio. About a month ago the memory on the Mac HD was completly full except 1GB. Ive been through deleting almost everything! and trasffering it all onto my new 3TB external HD. Yet still the memory on the Mac HD is still used mostly up;Capacity - 237.57 GB Avaliable -  24.86 GB Used - 207.71 GB My questions are, how do i free up more space? I can't seem to find much saved on my computer anymore only my itunes music which is no more than 10GB. Surley Logic Pro and a few other programs dont take up loads of space. My other question is how can i speed up my computer? so it doesnt come up with the ''system overload'' messages?

Intel Mac :: Computer Goes Slow When Running SketchUp/ Layout

Jun 16, 2012

I'm using an iMac and find it difficult when running SketchUp/ Layout.  It takes up to 5 to 6 mins to load a Layout file or it re-calculate and halt every few minutes when I am using SketchUp.  While waiting for it's re-calculation or loading up, I can still use other softwares normally.

I wonder if it is one of the following problems: -

1. The softwares use massive RAM that my computer don't have? if yes, how can I allocate more RAM for these 2 softwares?

2. My computer is not powerful enough to run rendering softwares, like SketchUp/ Layout?

The following is the spec of my computer, Intel Core i3, 3.06 GHz.
