Now I know something is up here, however I dont know what. I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro 2.66, 6GB , 300GB Velociraptor and a GTX 285. I stood in a very visually intensive area of Sholazar Basin and got 37 FPS @ 2560x1600 with everything at max.
I then changed ALL setting s to the LOWEST possible and resolution I took down to 1920x1200 .. guess what? SAME EXACT 37 FPS....
To make sure I do not have a faulty card I went and installed CUDA and an app that forces the GTX 285 to run full speed 1.48Ghz... I got the exact same results...
IS this the Card? the drivers? Snow leopard?? This SAME card runs at 80+ FPS using Bootcamp in the same machine so Im leaning toward Snow Leopard or the drivers... Anyone? Thoughts? I want to ditch my windows Gaming box but this is frustrating me to no end! My preference is to game with WoW in OS X but I cannot like this..
While using Mail, I got a message that there was an error with Mail and I needed to quit and reboot. When I re-opened mail, it prompted me to set it up and while it was reading the files, it froze. Subsequently, my Imac (OS 10.6.3? Snow Leopard) became frozen, i.e. my whole computer. I shut down using the back button (nothing else worked) and then restarted. I then re-booted using the regular re-start system. I was able to do 2-3 functions (the computer was super slow) and it froze again. After 2-3 repeats of the same procedure, it freezes after being turned off and on using the back button. I updated my software about 3 days ago. There was a major security update in that update. I'm waiting for a professional techy to call me back, but if you have any suggestions on how I should proceed, I'd be most grateful.

I am getting it for a good deal and it has all the software I will need for school Microsoft office photoshop. I was just wondering what are the capabilities of this machine. Could I play warcraft 3 and starcraft on this and do normal everyday tasks with ease. Or are the stats not good enough to do much of anything
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was installing the Mac OS X Snow Leopard (family pack), haven't installed yet, due to a moving from USA to Brazil. I put the CD on and followed the instructions of installation. After is ready to install, a message showed that would take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. So I left the room and when I came back the screen was bright with an "apple" on it, and its frozen, and I can't take the CD from the slot or do anything in the computer. What that means, did my laptop crashed? I did turn the power off and turn back on, but still the same.

I've searched and couldn't find anything on this, anyone got this setup and could let me know what the average fps is and can it play on ultra settings and be bearable (25-40 fps)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't find very much on this, but I am wondering how likely it is that Autodesk Maya 2010 (or other future releases) will be much more advanced on Snow Leopard. For example, finally having a 64-bit version for Mac. It would seem quite sad that for such an advanced program as Maya, for it to be limited only to a non-advanced OS as Windows. I've heard that it is possible, and that once Maya is available for Mac in 64-bit, it will be far superior to that of 64-bit Windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a Macbook Pro to use for school. I had asked around the web and people said a Mac Pro would run Autodesk Maya fine. Then I did some more research and found out that Maya 2010 and 2009 run oddly on any computer with Snow Leopard but they run fine on Leopard. I went to the Autodesk website and they said they are currently working on coding it correctly for Snow Leopard. Why they just decided now is a mystery. My question is, should I wait to hear news about Maya 2010 being qualified to run on SL or can I just buy it now and install it? when they fix the problem can I just update Maya online and it will be fine? I don't need Maya RIGHT now but I would like to have it eventually.
And if there is anyone out there who has Maya 2010 or 09 and it runs fine on SL please let me know. Also, I heard people just downgrade to Leopard if they upgraded to SL but the Mac Pro I have had SL installed on it so I don't have Leopard software. Is there a way for me to downgrade to Leopard? Like can I torrent it or call the Apple Store and ask them to help?
This popped up today, I did a search and didn't see anything about it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo is the 320m capable of pushing that high of a resolution in game with highest settings (Minus AA and AF, both of which would be near lowest, shadows would also be on medium-medium high)? I ask because, before I buy one, I want to make sure I know what I'm getting. I know the 320m isn't a gaming card by any means but I'd love to crank up the settings on WoW. I also wonder if it will still be able to push near max settings (in the case that it already does) when Cataclysm comes out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a Mid 2010 MacBook from eBay that has Lion on it. I'm trying to do a reinstall of Mac OS in order to remove an account that came on it but the restore process says that I'm not the "owner" when I type in my Apple ID. I don't have the original restore discs. I called Apple about this and they said that I could buy the retail version of Snow Leopard or buy Lion "again" in the app store but with my Apple ID.
I would think that if this computer originally shipped with Lion that I shouldn't have to buy it again, which suggests that maybe it really shipped with Snow Leopard. However, in user manual on support.apple.com for this model it talks about Lion.
I'm going to call Apple back about this but shouldn't they know based on my serial number which OS shipped with the computer?

I've noticed that in Snow Leopard when you minimize, for example a Quick Time movie to the Dock, the movie doesn't carry on playing like it used to. Instead it shows a freeze-frame of the last part of the movie before it was minimized. It's not an important feature but I was wondering about the reason for this change.

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf any of you recall, in System 7, you could double-click a sound file and it would just play without launching an app. The OS itself was capable of playing sounds, like system sounds or even music files (you could also use QuickTime). This was pre-iTunes. I miss those days. The other day, I was trying out some sound effects, and double-clicking them launched the behemoth bloatware app, iTunes. Of course, I could pick another app, but I would prefer no app at all, i.e., system-level, ready-to-eat sounds; just click and it plays. Does anyone know of a system-level plug-in or background app that works in this way? An analogous system function would be clippings. Double-click one of those and it just pops up; no app launches. This is how System 7 worked, and I sorely miss it. I use sampled sounds a lot, and I just want to click on them to quickly hear what they sound like in that same simple way we once could.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed a Kingston SSD drive in my 2010 mac mini. If I put the OSX install DVD (grey disc 1), the SSD is not visible in either the installer or disk utility.
The SSD is a Kingston 64 GB SATA 2.5-inch SSDNow V Series Solid State Drive. Cheap drive.
The funny thing is that before i started all this I restored a SuperDuper image of 10.6.4 from my old mini to the SSD using a usb to SATA adapter. Installed and it worked! The SSD booted OS X but the ethernet jack was not working.
Does anyone know of a workaround for installing OSX onto a drive that is not being recognized in disk utility?
I'd like to find a way to reinstall OSX using the grey DVD without having to remove the SSD drive.
Is it possible to turn off the feature whereby OSX presents me with a play button in the middle of a sound file? Everytime I want to select a sound file to move or delete it, I move the mouse over the file, click, and the silly thing starts to play. Okay, I know I can click outside the play button, but it is an extra bother to have to precisely position my mouse to avoid playing the file, a bother I can do without.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy brother and parents have a Mac Mini each.
They have not the latest generation but the prior Intel generation -- that shipped with Leopard.
Being the family IT guy, last time I was in town I purchased the Snow Leopard retail DVD family pack upgrade and upgraded my parents machines to Snow Leopard. I couldn't upgrade my brother's mini because he had it away at school.
Now he is back at my parents house (as am I) and I was all set to upgrade his machine to Snow Leopard but I can't find the retail install disk I purchased.
However, I do have the Snow Leopard Mac Mini OSX install DVD that shipped with my recently purchased (latest generation) Mac Mini.
Question -- does anyone know if I could use this latest generation Snow Leopard Mac Mini system install DVD (the one that shipped with my mac Mini) to upgrade my brother's previous generation mac mini running Leopard to snow leopard.
Not looking to do a clean install but rather the upgrade.
Anyhow ever tried this? I obviously don't want to upgrade his previous generation machine with drivers, etc. for my latest generation --- rather JUST get his leopard upgraded to snow leopard.
