View 8 RepliesI've been lurking for a while and on the fence about a new Mac Mini. Since I've given up on a Media Center PC with Blu Ray, I'm back to the Mac Mini. I've got two blu ray players and PS3, so I think we've got that covered! One of the things that I'd really like to have is maximum storage for the Mac Mini, since it will have the video and audio on there. The question is this. Is anyone out there running a Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard installed as a regular desktop machine? How does that work out? Is it worth it? I already have a very nice external Lacie double layer DVD burner, so the optical drive isn't necessary for me. Does the Mini Server with its 1TB of storage make sense? At $849 for a refurb at Apple.com, it seems pretty reasonable. Would love to hear thoughts from this crowd.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI purchased a top of the line Mac Mini Server and I'd like to install the standard version of Snow Leopard on it. I tried to the following: I inserted my retail snow leopard DVD in my macbook pro and I launched "Remote Install Mac OS X" (in /applications/utilities) and I followed the instructions. Then I booted the mac mini holding the "alt" key down and selected the snow leopard dvd as startup disk. What I see next is the Apple logo with the activity indicator spinning and after several seconds I see a "no entry" sign and nothing more it stays like this forever. Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a Mac mini server?

My Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.1 will not accept the update to 10.7.2 or 10.7.3. I know that there have been some MacBook Pro's that wont accept the install. I have run disk utility and repaired disk permissions and verified the disk. I cant boot off a disk as Lion is a direct download from the App store. I have read that 10.7.2 was very buggy and some people were restorong back to 10.7.1. Can I update to 10.7.3 from 10.7.1. I have also tried the stand alone installers. The same problem the .dmg downloads and opens I run the install package which validates and runs. When I am prompted to restart a message comes up same unexpected error ocurred unable to install and a restart option. Its driving me nuts.

I have a clean install of 10.6.3 Server (retail) and every time, after the post-installation reboot, I get to the Welcome screen and I can't use the local mouse/display to go any further (the "Continue" button is dimmed out). And there's the spinning progress wheel in the bottom, left corner. From past headless server installations, I think what's happening is the server is waiting for a remote connection to continue with the installation (via Server Admin or Apple Remote Desktop). Because I've had the logic board (just) replaced, I can't do a remote install as it's not accepting the "new" serial number associated with the logic board (ie. first 8 charachters), nor is it accepting the 12345678 password. So, I'm forced to do a local install — but, I can't even do that now because I'm stuck on the Welcome screen.Â
I've tried reinstalling the OS several times now, let the machine sit on the welcome screen for an hour, tried doing it with out and without network cables attached (including different ports on the Mac Pro, different cables, etc.), but I just can't get passed the Welcome screen.Â

First, I'm a n00b Mac user but I'm reasonably tech smart and I want to make the jump to OSX. I need a mac for the wife, who will use it in the living room connected to our TV. She does email, light desktop publishing, and a metric ton of movies and music: the iTunes library alone is 300GB. Plus she watches DVDs on it. I was thinking about buying a refurbed mac mini server (It's at a discounted price) but I don't need Snow Leopard Server. I'll add the external superdrive later. How hard would it be to just install regular Snow Leopard instead of Server? Also, in regular Snow Leopard, how would the HDDs show up in OSX? One big 1TB drive or 2 500gb drives?

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.
View 14 Replies View RelatedJust had my 3 yrs old Mac Mini decomission and set aside in the living hall as a media server recently. While I use the mini primary to watch movies, in which it does great with XBMC, I would like to have the ability to Remote Login (GUI) into the mini WHILE my wife is watching her fav movie CONCURRENTLY without any disturbance. I guess this a old topic i'm revisiting here. I've been googling around and searching this forum, but yet till now, the closest solution I've came to is having OSXvnc (Vine Server) running along with fast using switching, plus some VNC client etc. The worst part of this approach is, each remote user have to log into the physical machine for fast user switching. This is just soooo dodgy as compare to the windoze variant. I'm posting to see, if anyone have a better solution that:
1. each remote user dun have to physically login first
2. I can have concurrent session running (either remote, or local-wife watching movie)
Does the Mac OSX SL Server have something to offer to this problem? And also, I've discovered that The Apple Remote Desktop is more for a network administrator sort of app, totally not related to allowing multiple concurent remote GUI Sessions.
Tried running some instructions from MacWorld that were for Tiger, but it doesn't seem to work.Anybody know how to create a local DNS server on a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard?

I'm trying to install an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard from Apple on my Mac Mini running 10.5.8. I bought this system used and the volume says ";" and the error log code is 21. Seems it can't find valid softward ID to continue or the path is different. Not sure where to go with this.

I bought a Mac Mini on ebay and it came with snow leopard already installed. Its been working great but today, i decided I want to swap the 80gb drive for the old 320gb drive from my laptop (the laptop got a shiny new SSD). Problem is, when i try to boot from the 10.6.2 install disc, it says that snow leopard cannot be installed on this Mac. Any way i can get it to install Snow Leopard on the new drive?
Also, I tried running the installer on the old HDD from inside the old Snow leopard install and it also said that it could not install snow leopard. It then asked me to restart and kept attempting to install Snow leopard and failing.
specs of Mac mini:
-Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
-Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
-1Gb 667MHz DDR2 RAM
-4 USB ports
for the record, i think the guy i bought it from bought a new mac mini and just included the discs that came with the new one in the one he sold me. The instruction manual shows a mac mini with a mini display port. The only OSX disc i got from him was the snow leopard one. also, if it matters, this mac mini is the only mac computer that I own.
On my Intel mac mini (march 2009), it took about 2 hours to install Snow Leopard. The whole time the CD drive was making some weird noises too. Wonder if I somehow messed it up when upgrading the ram.

Leopard 10.5.8 runs fine on this 2.26ghz Mac Mini. BUT every time I try to install Snow Leopard, with about ten minutes left in the installation process, I get a kernel panic. The only thing I can think of that is doing this is either 1. I am driving a 30" Cinema Display through a mini dvi to dvi adapter on the Mini -- reducing resolution but still running it fine (I do this with my 12" Powerbook 1.5ghz as well, doing it now as a matter of fact. It makes the picture huge but fine for me at moment) 2. 3rd Party Ram bought at Fry's Patriot 2 x 2GBs ... but passed hardware tests and no problems in 10.5.8. 3. I have not done all the imovie/garageband/idvd/remote desktop/itunes 9 updates in Leopard. I have done all the other updates to 10.5.8 and don't use these apps, so can't see how this is affecting a Snow Leopard update. Any thoughts? It quits and kernel panics during the Snow Leopard update. It was kernel panicking in Leopard, too, when using iPhoto a few weeks ago. Wondering if it is something to do with the Mini Dvi to Dvi adapter (not dual link) to 30" Cinema Display?
