We are using a MAC server for VPN to the company but somehow when I restarted it today it is frozen on startup screen. what could be the reason? Â

I was installing the Mac OS X Snow Leopard (family pack), haven't installed yet, due to a moving from USA to Brazil. I put the CD on and followed the instructions of installation. After is ready to install, a message showed that would take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. So I left the room and when I came back the screen was bright with an "apple" on it, and its frozen, and I can't take the CD from the slot or do anything in the computer. What that means, did my laptop crashed? I did turn the power off and turn back on, but still the same.

I have a clean install of 10.6.3 Server (retail) and every time, after the post-installation reboot, I get to the Welcome screen and I can't use the local mouse/display to go any further (the "Continue" button is dimmed out). And there's the spinning progress wheel in the bottom, left corner. From past headless server installations, I think what's happening is the server is waiting for a remote connection to continue with the installation (via Server Admin or Apple Remote Desktop). Because I've had the logic board (just) replaced, I can't do a remote install as it's not accepting the "new" serial number associated with the logic board (ie. first 8 charachters), nor is it accepting the 12345678 password. So, I'm forced to do a local install — but, I can't even do that now because I'm stuck on the Welcome screen.Â
I've tried reinstalling the OS several times now, let the machine sit on the welcome screen for an hour, tried doing it with out and without network cables attached (including different ports on the Mac Pro, different cables, etc.), but I just can't get passed the Welcome screen.Â

I've not found any correlation between what is plugged into the mac or not plugged in and the successful or unsuccessful startup. It just appears random. I've begun studying the console for anything that might indicate what's going on when this happens. This line was the last line in the console before the hard reboot a few times, suggesting it might be the culprit. The volume it is looking for is an external HD that was connected to this computer once almost a year ago and never again. I can't determine what startup process is looking for that SFX_aiff directory, or why. Is there any way to tell this system to cease looking for that volume upon startup? Â

My Snow leopard machine hangs during startup at the screen with the Grey Apple logo. It appears there is a SW issue with my OS X boot partition. Here are facts I have learned:The computer boots fine if I hold option at startup and select my boot camp partitionThe compute boots fine if I attach an external HD with OS X 10.6Running a disk repair from the external HD, I see the following two issues that are repaired. Also, note the last line about boot partitionsAfter this disk repair, the disk will still not boot, it hangs at the Grey Apple logo.Booting in safe mode does not resolve the issue, the machine will still not boot to a desktopBooting in Verbose mode, drivers initialize with the last succesful line being the ethernet drives (I believe) and then the hangup occurs. It is unclear what state the boot process is at on the hangup.Â
This situation has happen twice in the past few weeks. The first time I did a reinstall of OS X to resolve the issue. Then, the issue appeared again approximately two weeks later. I'm hoping to avoid a second reinstall (And really, avoid this issue in the future). It seems perhaps something in the boot partition table or the OS partition, although disk utility says the partition is fine. I have downloaded Test Disk 6.13 to look at the partition table, but I don't know how to interpret the outputs of that program. Â

I had permission problems (locked time machine drive) so I did a full time machine restore.
Did the restart after the restore. Machine won't reboot. I get 'bong', apple logo on grey screen as per normal.
Then blue screen and spinning wheel for approx 7 seconds Then blue screen and black pointer for approx 2 seconds The blue screen spinning wheel / black pointer repeats. Also can't start up from Snow Leopard DVD.
I get exactly the same scenario. I have held down the power key at got the tone. Still won't start. It's an Imac (white one) 1.8Gig Dual with 1.5 gig of ram.
Running Snow leopard. I can see my disc over the ethernet; it is still there as it was sharing with my other machine.

I manage to get to enter my password and then to my desktop for a few seconds before it flicks back to my login.
I tried using disk utility from the install disc and it said HD appears to be ok. But it hasn't solved the problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo out of nowhere my unibody MBP (specs, etc below) locked up yesterday while I was watching a video using VLC. It stopped responding to anything so I held down the power button until it turned off. I waited about 10 minutes and turned it back on. Grey screen with spinning cog showed up for about a minute and then kernel panic. Held down power button until it turned off. Tried repeatedly - same results. Won't boot into Safe Mode - still get a kernel panic everytime. It will let me boot the machine into Target Disk Mode. It will boot from my Snow Leopard install disk where I ran Disk Utility and "repaired disk" and "repaired disk permissions" on both the drive and the volume. All the "repair disk" and "repair disk permissions" ended with messages in green type saying that the disk/permissions appear to be OK.Â
I have an external FW drive used for TM backups for the machine. A fair amount of data has been added since the last TM backup (which was less than 30 days ago) that, ideally, I'd like to not lose by resorting to restoring from a TM backup. It's not the end of the world if the last (roughly) 30 days of data/changes ends up being lost, but I'm willing to work on getting it back up and running without doing an erase and install and then restoring from a TM backup if at all possible.Â

I turned my 2011 iMac on this morning but it never loaded past the startup screen. Eventually the Apple icon which is usually displayed on the screen turned into the broken folder symbol. I read some articles on how to fix this and tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, but that didn't work. I was going to try reinstalling OS X next, but putting the disc into the driver doesn't appear to do anything, and now I can't eject it.

While using Mail, I got a message that there was an error with Mail and I needed to quit and reboot. When I re-opened mail, it prompted me to set it up and while it was reading the files, it froze. Subsequently, my Imac (OS 10.6.3? Snow Leopard) became frozen, i.e. my whole computer. I shut down using the back button (nothing else worked) and then restarted. I then re-booted using the regular re-start system. I was able to do 2-3 functions (the computer was super slow) and it froze again. After 2-3 repeats of the same procedure, it freezes after being turned off and on using the back button. I updated my software about 3 days ago. There was a major security update in that update. I'm waiting for a professional techy to call me back, but if you have any suggestions on how I should proceed, I'd be most grateful.

I have tried to install leopard on my Macbook Pro. It just takes me to the gray boot screen with the apple logo in the center and the circle status bars. It won't leave this screen. Stayed there all last night. Every time I reboot it goes here and won't advance. I can't eject the disk either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â

The lost configs are everytime the same: VPN (complete) and iChat (a secondary but very important Host-Domain). Of course a can restore them from a backup but that shouldn't the standard procedure after a restart....Â

Now clients stop authenticating & when I check the AD plugin it says network accounts are not available. I can force the server to unbind, then renew the binding & everything works great.Is there any work around or fix for this other than upgrading the windows server to 2008?Â

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...Â
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...Â
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic... Â
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic... Â
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?
