All I've found regarding this question is simply removing the server app, but as I can say all the processes still work — emails about IP address changes are generated and sent, you name it.

Mar 5, 2012I have just purchased my first mac (Mini Server w/ quad i7) the other week. I am having serious troubles connecting it to the internet at my work or uni networks. The mini works just fine at home with a simple connection to the modem/router. But at uni there is a small infrastructure and proxy, and at work there is a more complicated setup also (although the firewall isn't blocking any ports or normal internet traffic. There also isn't any MAC address filtering on any of the networks). I have tried both ethernet and WiFi, with no success.Â
Mac mini obtains local IP, can successfully contact the DNS. Pinging locally to the gateway fails (so so does pinging google, or external addresses). traceroute also fails internally. But that's about as far as I can go on either work or uni networks.
I've fiddled around with all settings i can find under 'Advanced' in the network options. But again nothing.Â
It is a completely fresh install of OSX 10.7.3, no 3rd part apps or software have been installed yet (this is due to not having an internet connection).Â
I am COMPLETELY new to mac software - other than knowing the dashboard is down the bottom, the taskbar is up the top and the minimizing/closing is in the top left corner. I am in the 3rd year of my IT degree at uni, so I know some generic networking troubleshooting, but that's about all.Â

Mar 9, 2012I have a dozen of macs connected to a mac mini server. This one is programmed to automatically switch on at 8:00 am and switch off at 8:00 pm. However, if a user is still connected at time of switchng off (8:00 pm) it cannot switch off automatically and a window appears saying another user is still connected, do you still wish to disconnect. If administrator is no more there to click yes, server does not switch off and still runs all night long. On former versions (10.4 or 10.5 ?) it worked the other way, ie other users were informed that server would be disconnected in the next one minute and that they had to save their work.Â
Is there a solution to come back to a similar way of proceeding?

Mar 12, 2012Is is possible to share files to the desktop of a mini-server running Lion? I've done this for years with other operating systems with no trouble ... and when I drag files to other locations on the mini-server it works fine.
But when I try to drag a file to the desktop of the mini-server, I get asked for a password. I type in the password; it gets accepted. Then I get a dialog: "A newer version of do you want to replace...?" When I click "yes," I get another dialog:

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Average Number Of Users On A Mini Running?
May 2, 2012I'm in IT at a shop that is 98% Mac based. At this point in time, we would like to use Lion Server to provide Time Machine backups and software updates to our users. The environment is as follows: We are all using laptops, connecting to our network and the internet using wireless only. The mini has an ethernet cable attached and wireless will not be enabled for it. All Time Machine backups and software updates will be done wirelessly. The backups will be mostly text files, although in some instances there will be large amounts of said files. Of course I will limit and exclude certain folders and file types from backup and I would like to have the user do their first backup via firewire/thunderbolt so the largest amount of data will not be pushed over the air. I'm currently running tests with a few users doing just Time Machine backups to the Mini and all is going well, but I'm curious as to how many people I will be able to place on one Mini before it becomes too much. We have about 70 users now and could be close to 100 by the end of the year. We are a company that will continue to grow too. Anyone have thoughts or experience with a large user base doing backups to a Mini like this? How many users could I fit on each Mini? Would I be better off just going for the Mac Pro?

Feb 5, 2010I am a web developer using Mac to develop and Ubuntu Server to deploy. It's a pretty standard setup nowadays.The time came to replace my staging server ( which I keep at my home on a dedicated IP ) and I could not resist the allure of the new Mac Mini Server. So I bought one and tried to do a Ubuntu install and thought I could sell my OSX server license as I have no need of it.I imagine a lot of people not used to Apple's policies might think like this. So how did it go? Bad and then good.As far as I have been able to ascertain, it's impossible to install Ubuntu on a Mac Mini Server ( at least without the additional DVD-ROM drive which I refuse to buy ).What's more, the OSX Server license I bought is not transferable to non-Mac Mini Server computers so I can't really sell it anyway.

Jun 23, 2010The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Jul 1, 2010I do have a copy of the the Mac Mini SL Client software but I don't have another Mac to create the USB restore disc in order to load the client on the Mini Server via usb drive. I don't intend to use the Server Software and don't want to 'activate' the license so I can resell it instead. Can I just use the Server to create the bootable restore disc without 'activating' the Server License and locking it to my serial number? Or is there another way to create the restore disc if you don't have access to another Mac to run disc utility?

I was thinking about buying a refurbed mac mini server (It's at a discounted price) but I don't need Snow Leopard Server. I'll add the external superdrive later.How hard would it be to just install regular Snow Leopard instead of Server?Also, in regular Snow Leopard, how would the HDDs show up in OSX? Jan 9, 2011 One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
Mac OS X Lion Server :: AD LDAP Connects To Lion Server But Does Not Show Users / Groups
Feb 19, 2012I have a server in our DMZ that connects to Active Directory LDAP server (non-ssl over 389) but no objects actually show up in the directory editor. I get a green light in my Network Account Server, but queries against LDAP return no results. My end goal is to be able to dictate to Profile Manager what LDAP groups are allowed to enroll devices. I tested on our internal network on a test server and get the same results. Anyone have any luck connecting a Lion Server to LDAP and actually being able to view and utilize users and groups?

Nov 15, 2009When you get a new OSX machine it asks if you want to transfer everything over from another machine, then you connect the firewire or whichever cable it tells you, and it does the rest.
I am replacing my Mini with a Mini Server (1TB), and on boot it asks if I want to transfer data from another "Server". I was hoping I could transfer from OSX to OSX Server since it's the same OSX just more options are added, I would understand it it didn't go in the other direction.
It gives me a blank window with Transfer Your Server at the top and says to select the volume to transfer from (none listed). It doesn't say how I would connect or select the machine from which to select the volume. Is there any easy way to transfer my programs and files over, or not, between non-server and a server version? I could manually share the HD on the Mini and drag over program and file folders etc. if there is no automatic way.

Regardless of which Mini I end up with, my plan is to remove the Superdrive and install two 500GB Momentus XT hybrid hard drives (Raid 0?) with Time Machine backups for all the computers on external FW800 drives that I have. That said, will an early '09 Mini with the 2.0 C2D have enough horsepower, or do I need a current gen model?

Feb 9, 2012I recently updated my Server running 10.7.0 to version 10.7.3 and single-sign-on no longer works for my users. The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message Â
I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.Â

Mar 12, 2012I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.
When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped).The common name and the DNS name are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)Â

I know with previous installations of Filemaker Server I have been asked whether I wanted to keep the system version of PHP or install PHP which comes with Filemaker Server, but I don't recall being prompted about it on this occasion. Previously I had always opted to retain the system PHP.
