Mac Mini :: Connected Old Hard Drive Externally?

Mar 18, 2012

My original A1174 Mac Mini crashed about 3 weeks ago. I was running OSX 10.4 on it. I removed the hard drive and put it into a Rocketfish enclosure yesterday. Now, I'm connecting it via USB to another A1174 Mini running OSX 10.5.8, and trying to see if I can salvage any of the data on the old hard drive, but haven't been successful. Can I access this hard disk externally?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Broken By Connected Hard Drive

Oct 5, 2010

my brand new dual-band Airport Extreme has been working great for the last 2 weeks since I bought it. Today I connected an external hard drive (WD Passport 500Gb) via a USB hub, and it was working great for a few Gb of file transfers.

About an hour later, I transferred another file, and the Airport ceased to work halfway through; I went to check and the Airport was completely dead. No lights, hard reset does nothing.

OS X :: Time Machine And NTFS External Hard Drive Connected Via USB?

Aug 18, 2010

I am in need of assistance with backing up my macbook pro using time machine. I am running Mac OS X leopard 10.5.8. I have attempted to backup to a network share folder on a Windows machine, but the backup abruptly ends. So, I decided to attach an NTFS external drive, connected via usb. The external drive was formatted on a Windows 7 machine (not quick format); so, it currently has no space occupied. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. Then, I rebooted and attached the NTFS external drive. I set the preferences in time machine to backup to the aforementioned drive. However, Console is reporting that the backup failed with error 19, and time machine is reporting that the storage location for backups cannot be found, when i command time machine to backup now.

Is there something I'm missing? I have seen at least one other thread on the Internet where a mac user was able to get time machine to work with an NTFS external hard drive. Do I need to create a separate sparse bundle image and copy it to the external drive, similar to the method used to get time machine to copy to network shares on Windows? If the ironclad rule is time machine ONLY recognizes HFS+ drives, then a sparse bundle image is a good workaround. But then what is the point of MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. What is its purpose, as it relates to time machine?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Gets Error -50 When Connected Internally But Not In USB Enclosure

Sep 4, 2014

I have a SATA hard drive that works perfectly when connected through an external USB enclosure but whenever it's plugged into the internal SATA connector on my MacBook Pro I receive the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." any time I attempt to move or copy a file to it.

This doesn't happen with any other hard drive I connect internally, so I don't believe it's an issue with the internal cable.

I have made sure all permissions are set to allow reading and writing to the drive as well as selecting the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option in the Get Info panel.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: TimeMachine Won't Create Hard Links For Replacement Drive If Not Connected

May 26, 2012

With TimeMachine, I backup two external drives (let's call them drive A and B). Recently, drive B broke and I restored the data on a replacement drive and gave the volume the same name as the broken one had. I made TimeMachine aware of the fact that this new drive corresponds to the old one by using the "tmutil -a associatedisk" command as described here: [URL]When TimeMachine started the next backup, it did not perform all full backup of the new drive, though still way more than it should. So far so god.

The problem is: if TimeMachine performs a backup while the new drive (the replacement of drive B) is not connected, it does not create the hard links for it. Drive A is not connected either, though hard links for it show up in the Backups.backupdb folder for this backup. If the replacement drive is connected the next time, TimeMachine will perform a full backup of it ... most likely because the previous backup does not contain any hard links.

Hardware :: Speed Difference Between Time Capsule Backup Versus Hard Drive To Extreme Connected Via Usb?

Mar 16, 2009

For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.

I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.

Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?

So anyone that wants to hook up his new Mac to an older TV set with the Video adapter, you are warned.I guess i'll have to buy a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA to SVIDEO converter..

Hardware :: Drive Recognized When Connected Via USB But Not When Connected Via FireWire?

Jan 28, 2009

I consider myself very good at all things Mac. But this one has me stumped.

I've just arrived home with a WD My Book Home Edition 1TB external drive. Formatted for Windows it mounted correctly via FireWire and USB.

First things first: I formatted it for the Mac... Mac OS Extended (Journaled), two GUID partition tables. So far so good. Each partition is recognized, each mounts like it should.

Time Machine then backed up my Intel iMac... again, everything's normal. No odd or unusual behavior.

Here's where things get strange.

For whatever reason I formatted the drive via USB. But my intention hereafter is to connect via FireWire... I need each USB port for peripherals.

But the drive isn't recognized through FireWire. I'm asked if I want to initialize it. When reconnected through USB the drive mounts again.

What's going on? Why is the drive recognized when connected via USB but not when connected via FireWire?

I want to clone my current drive to the new one but once I get both drives installed is there a way to remove the OS from the HDD? Mac Mini :: Hard Drive Is Missing 60 GB?

My time maching back up is 60 GB less than my Hard Drive and I know that the back up is an accurate count of used GB's as I have been keeping an eye on this.  I recently empltied my trash and found 15 GB's but I am still showing a 60 GB difference between what my MAC HD says vs. my Time Machine back up HD.  How could this be? and where could I possibly missing 60GB.  I would think if they were actually used somewhere that Time Machine would be backing them up as well.

IMac :: Reading HDD Externally - To Copy Most Recent Data

Sep 27, 2010

I have experienced a main 320GB hard drive failure in my 24" iMac - which isn't as bad as it sounds as 1) I was considering an upgrade anytime soon anyway, and 2) I have a fairly recent backup. I am taking it to mac repairs tomorrow in Manchester so they can replace it with a 1TB drive - however, I want the original hard drive back on which I am planning to take the most recent data off it that wasn't backed up - so was hoping to shove the damaged SATA drive into an existing USB enclosure, plug it into my new iMac, fix any damaged areas on the drive, then restore what data I need (if retrievable)

But, a colleague has told me tonight, that I can only do that if the enclosure has a Firewire connection - I won't be able to achieve it with a USB connection - can't see why, but can anyone confirm if that is correct? - he seems to think it's something to do with how Disk Utility reads from a drive, the security on the drive, and the file structure but he wasn't sure!

Desktops :: Full Hard Drive On Mac Mini

Jul 2, 2010

My son is having a BIG problem with his Mac Mini. His Mini has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory of 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and runs Mac OS X Version 10.6.3. He has Time Machine and also a 1.5TB desktop hard drive. From time to time, he has been getting pop-up warnings that his internal hard drive was about to become full. He would then do some deleting and things would be fine until the next pop-up. Last week, after watching some videos on Utube, he tried to open iTunes and, instead of a pop-up, got an error message with some numbers (which he didn't write down). It began the usual routine, starting with a white screen with the apple logo in the center and the loading circle spinning right below it. After that, it normally goes to a light blue screen and then loads the desktop, but this time (and ever since) it stopped at the blue screen, empty except for the message "Hard Drive Full, Please Delete Data".

Apparently the screensaver still works, but not much else -- like the Finder. He said that he did get something to appear on the top bar by taking the batteries out of his Apple Bluetooth keyboard, bringing up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant", but once a wired keyboard is plugged in, everything on the top bar disappears (since the Mac sees a keyboard). He was going to do a "restore" and, in preparation, thought he had done a successful back-up to his external hard drive using the Time Machine feature. However, when he checked the Time Machine under System Preferences it said that the external HD had nearly 1.5 TB unused (only a couple hundred pictures or so on it) and the Time Machine was supposed to put about 70GB on there. So now he is concerned that he didn't/can't do a back-up.

Mac Mini :: Power PC Hard Drive Not Mounting

My mother-in-laws Power PC Mac Mini stopped working the other day. After booting to disk utility and seeing that there wasn't a hard drive mounting I assumed the hard drive was dead. I ordered a replacement from OWC, opened the mini, and put in the new hard drive. Now I can't get the mini to boot from CD all I get is a blank gray screen and eventually the folder with a question mark icon. I was under the assumption I could boot to disc again, format and reinstall on the new hard drive. I also can't get the CD to eject but it is spinning up.

OS X :: Hard Drive Swap From Mac Mini To MacBook Pro?

Oct 6, 2009

thinking of relegating my mini to HTPC and buying a new base model 15" MacBook Pro. As both these systems have essentially the same hardware, including 9400M graphics, can I just swap the hard drives so my current 7200rpm mini drive goes into the new MacBook Pro, and the new, unused, 5400 rpm drive comes out of the Pro and into the mini?

Any reason this wouldn't work? I just think it would take a lot of time to back everything up to Time Capsule and then fresh install both hard drives.

Mac Mini :: Hard Drive Clicking Every 20 Seconds?

Jun 5, 2010

So, I searched around for some information. One suggestion was disk utility, make sure SMART status is verified (it is). It's a fujitsu 160gb.
