Mac Mini :: HDMI Through Denon Receiver?

Jul 1, 2012

I have a Mac Mini Server running as a Home Theatre PC (HTPC) and it's been working great for the last couple of years...(Mac Mini has HDMI output).  I recently upgraded my receiver to one that has HDMI switching (Denon AVR-3312CI).  I took advantage of this and plugged in my Mac to my receiver and I'm having some problems. I am running a few "Media" type applications (EyeTV and Plex) - some of which (EyeTV specifically) can launch when no one is watching the TV (i.e. to function as a "TiVO" type device.  When (let's say) EyeTV launches in the background and the TV and the Receiver are OFF, the Mac believes that it has no monitor attached...which is (I believe) a critical detail...

What ends up happening is when I "connect" the monitor (by turning on the receiver) the screen resolution "sets" (or more specifically the refresh rate) and the video I am attempting to watch is really jumpy until I quit and re-launch the offending application (again - let's assume EyeTV)...which is then silky smooth... The way I came to this conclusion is by VNC'ing into the Mini while everything is off and looking at the display settings and the resolution is there, but there is no refresh rate available...  I've also noticed that if EyeTV isn't open when I turn everything on and then launch EyeTV, it comes up smooth...

is it possible to "fake" an attached monitor - or to retain the settings when it appears to the computer that the monitor has been disconnected...??  I've come up with a workaround for the time being - to delay EyeTV launching until everything is up...but when primetime TV comes back on, I'll be in trouble...

Mac Mini :: HDTV Flicker With HDMI Connected?

Feb 4, 2012

Got 2011 Mac mini and connected via HDMI to 15 months old Samsung 46 inch LED TV using 1080p and 50Hz. From start (dec 2011) I have had the problem that occationally (>50% of the times) the TV starts to flicker heavily. It is "war of the ants = cannot see anything" on the TV for like 3 seconds and then I can see the desktop clearly for around 3 seconds an then it is back to the flicker.screen. It keeps on like that until I shut-down and restart the Mac mini. Sometime restart works an sometime it does not. Anyone with similar problems that know what to do?

I have swapped the working connections with the mac mini in question. Restarts don't always correct the problem. cleared safari history, reset cache, repaired permissions, etc. Computer will work for anywhere between 5 minutes to 1 hour, then lose the internet connection. Using same computer to manage iphone4s (if that matters)

Can one of you clever bods point me in the direction of what cable I need, and also what do I need to do to the iMac to make it behave as just a monitor? Is it just a matter of plugging in the cables and off I go?

MacBook Pro :: 2011 Is Not Outputting 5.1 Surround Through Hdmi?

Jun 22, 2012

I have a 2011 macbook pro with a thunderbolt/hdmi adapter connected to a receiver, so I can watch movies on my tv. Video files with 5.1 dolby have always played fine through this exact setup, however, recently, only 2 channel audio goes through. I know that the adapter is good, and it isn't the receiver because I have tried other devices on the same ports. So it must be something on the macbook end.8 channel, 192 kz is selected under hdmi in midi options, and hdmi is always selected as output in the movie player I use. There is no reason it should still only be 2 channel on my receiver.

PS. I am on 10.7.4 using a mono-price thunderbolt/hdmi adapter and an Onkyo HT-R590 receiver.

MacBook Pro :: 15" Late 2011 - Losing HDMI Signal Intermittently

Aug 27, 2014

MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 (Mavericks 10.9.4); 4 GB ram.  I am running HDMI to a new video projector.  The HDMI signal is lost periodically for about 1-2 seconds and then comes back.  It occurs about every 5-7 minutes (about 20 times during a 50 minute lecture).  It loses both video and audio. Screen goes black but no displayed messages.  I have read a variety of other posts with similar symptoms with various computers (e.g. Mac mini) and even with DVI cable use.  In my case, I've used two different HDMI adaptors so it's not the adaptor. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDMI cable itself.  (A fellow professor does not have the issue with his PC and he uses the same equipment.) Neither the computer nor the cable is touched.  (I have another colleague who reports the same symptoms in his music lab.) Bottom line is that it's a distraction to my students and it's occurring off different Macs in different locations.  This means to me that it may be something with the particular generation of Macs we're using.

MacBook Pro :: External Display Flickering Static When Connected Thru HDMI Splitter

Jun 25, 2014

I have a Late 2011 MBP, just recently I also go an Xbox and wanted to hook it up to my external display that I have been using for a long time with no issues. I went and bought this: URL....to be able to easily switch between the two inputs. The xbox works fine, however when I view my Macs input the screen flickers a static image very frequently.

I know what you're thinking, it's probably an issue with either a cable, or the device. But when I boot into Windows via Bootcamp with the same exact setup, there is no flicker at all. The display is a dell s2440L, the HDMI adapter is a rocket fish.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have tried: Resetting PRAM/SMCChanging out HDMI cables on both the Splitter output, and the inputs (I tried 3 different cables on both the inputs, and outputs.)Downgrading OSX to 10.7 (And then went back to 10.9)Lowering the resolution on the monitor (Lower resolutions flicker just as much, if not more.)Resetting the splitter by unplugging the HDMI cord powering it and plugging it back in.and of course, plugging my computer into the splitter input that the Xbox works fine on, as well as taking the xbox one out so the computer is the only input on the splitter.

Like I said, the Xbox works fine, and even the computer works fine in Windows, but whenever I boot into OSX my screen flickers with this static. I should add, the display works fine when not connected to the splitter on OSX.

Mac Mini :: Unable To Get Display Via Tv / Connected Mini DVI To Video Adapter

Mar 28, 2009

Just a warning, I bought a Mac Mini (2009) and wanted it to hook it up to my TV. My TV does not have HDMI or DVI inputs so I bought a Mini DVI to Video adapter from Apple. But I could not get it to work, then I googled for it and it seems this adapter does not work with 2009 Mac's since it does not output an analog signal anymore!

So anyone that wants to hook up his new Mac to an older TV set with the Video adapter, you are warned.I guess i'll have to buy a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA to SVIDEO converter..
