OS X :: System Lockups - Place To Start And Keep Troubleshooting

Jul 22, 2009

Something has happened/changed on my iMac whereby my system locks up so tight that I cannot force quit anything, or do anything else to the system. My only option is to manually reboot. This started last week and I thought I had removed/uninstalled the offending program (iStat Menu) but tonight my system did it again.Any good place to start to keep/start troubleshooting?

Mac Pro :: Random Lockups Find In My System

Apr 12, 2009

original 2.66 dual mac pro and for the longest time the mac would randomly lock. It would be on for a couple of days and just lock, sometimes it would be a few weeks. I checked the console and did not see anything as to why, just that the logs stopped.I started by taking out drives (have 3 drives) which did nothing, then i started with the ram. I've got 2gigs of apple ram (4x512s) and 2x2gb of non apple ram. I first removed a gig of the apple ram (2x512) and noticed from multiple weeks it doubled the time i would see lock ups (could be a coincidence). I finally removed the last 2 sticks of apple ram and my machine hasn't locked up since.

Software :: Troubleshooting Sync Services For Mac

Jan 23, 2011

I can't think of something to post now... just come up with this one.,. looking forward to help other forum users here that might need the information Ok, here it goes : post any comment if anyone wants to add something or has a comment .

With the introduction of Outlook 2011 for Mac, many Mac users are asking the burning question around how to sync Outlook 2011 for Mac with the native Mac Address Book. This is especially relevant as many users now sync their mobile phone contacts (Blackberry, Android, iPhone) with the native Address Book contacts manager. For example, RIMs Desktop Manager for Mac syncs with iCal and the Address Book and relies on Sync Services to sync with Outlook 2011 contacts. If you will now be managing your contacts inside Outlook, you will need a way to sync these contacts back to the native Address Book.

This is also true if you are using Scrubly to clean up your Address Book contacts. You will need to turn on Sync Services inside Outlook to sync your newly cleaned up contacts from Address Book to Outlook Contacts. Follow the steps below.

Before we begin, you should note that Outlook 2011 will sync contacts from Address Book, and you can sync e-mail accounts with Mail. However, Outlook 2011 wont sync events or tasks from iCal (in part because Microsofts primary design goal with Outlook was to make it work with Exchange). Outlook 2011 also does not support CalDAV.

Setting up Sync Services for Mac:

1. Before turning on Sync Services inside Outlook 2011, be sure to turn off all other 3rd party sync services you may be running in the background. Once Outlook 2011 has completed its initial sync with Address Book, you may turn these services back on again.

2. As a precaution, make a backup of your Address Book contacts. File > Export > Address Book Archive. Its important to make a backup of your data after you clean it up and before you sync. This way if there are problems you can erase and import the clean backup file.

3. In Outlook 2011, open Outlook Preferences by clicking Outlook > Preferences

4. Click Sync Services and select Turn on Sync Services for Contacts. Outlook 2011 does not yet support sync for iCal.

5. Select the accounts you would like to sync, (i.e. Address Book or MobileMe). Note that Outlook 2011 does not support MobileMe calendar or tasks sync at this time.

Troubleshooting Sync Services for Mac:

The above steps are really quite easy, however, many users have complained that syncing does not occur after following these steps. Heres a few troubleshooting tips you can follow in the event this happens to you.

Important: Be sure to back up your Address Book and Outlook Contacts before testing any of these Troubleshooting steps.

Turn on iSync

1. Launch iSync, located in the Applications > Utilities folder
2. Open preferences window in iSync Application Menu
3. Check Enable syncing on this computer. Sometimes this option seems to be disabled or you cant check or uncheck this option after starting iSync. In this case, wait for iSync to complete the sync process and then the option will be available again.
4. Reset Sync History. Important: If you are using the new MobileMe Calendar, resetting sync data is not an appropriate troubleshooting step to solve calendar sync issues. Instead, please see Troubleshooting new MobileMe Calendar issues. If youre not sure how to tell if youre using the old or new MobileMe Calendar, see this article.

Delete Plist Files

1. Force quit all applications currently running.
2. Go > Home > Library > Preferences
3. Search for all files containing com.microsoft.outlook.XXXXX.plist drag these files to the Trash
4. Search for the file com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent.plist and drag this file to the Trash
5. Start Outlook
6. Tools > Sync Services and confirm that Turn on Sync Services for Contacts is checked on

Close and Re-Start Sync Services Agent

1. Force Quit Outlook
2. Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
3. Look for the Sync Services Agent under Process Name
4. Highlight this process and click Quit in the upper left
5. Close Activity Monitor
6. Re-Start Outlook

PowerPC :: Unable To Start System After Update / File System Got Corrupted?

Jul 19, 2007

I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.

After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....

MacBook Pro :: Mini DisplayPort To VGA Adapter Troubleshooting?

Mar 16, 2010

I am trying to get my projector to display movies, tv, etc. from my MBP. I got the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter but it doesn't seen to recognize any connections going out to the projector. It does not come up with the "mirror the display" option in the displays section of the system preferences. Is there a way to troubleshoot the Mini DisplayPort to see if it's working? I downloaded the firmware patch with the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter hooked up to the projector but it was unable to install it since it said that the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter was not detected! I'm thinking that there may be a malfunction to the Mini DisplayPort... Is there any way to check it? I tried 2 different VGA cables. The only thing left would be an issue with the adapter.

I was problem free for about two years until last October when my MBP suddenly wouldn't boot up (hung at the grey apple screen). I took it to my University's computer repair center, and they said either there was a corrupt OS file, or my HDD was going bad. I went home and booted from my OSX disc and did a full erase and install. My computer worked fine for a few months following the erase and install

I have tried bigger shims and that does not help. If I try to install Leopard on the iBook it doesn't even make it 25% before locking up.

IMac :: Common Denominator With Lockups For 4850 ATI Version?

Apr 18, 2009

I don't mean to start a new Thread but I think this one could really pinpoint the problem if we could get some good feedback on this. What is the Common Denominator (besides having the HD4850 option) that could be causing the lockups that some people are having.

Examples Is everyone who is experiencing lockups :
1.) Installed Boot Camp and using Windows with this HD4850 option?
2.) Do you use Safari exclusively and not FireFox?
3.) Does it happen only when Surfing ?
4.) Does it happen only when playing a certain game like WOW?
5.) Does it happen only after you been using the iMac for a few hours?
so on. . .

See my point? Write down or make yourself notes to as what you were doing exactly when it locked up? Reply to this Thread and lets figure this out. It will be must easier if everyone could put their situation in this Thread and maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

Hardware :: Spotlight Hangs, Drive Corruptions And Lockups?

Feb 20, 2008

I've just installed 10.5 and the .2 update in the past couple of days. Everything was working okay and then it appeared that Spotlight started to hang on something. Once it started hanging, weird things started to happen with my drives. As a professional photographer, my drives are my life and when weird things start to happen, I get a little freaked out.Yesterday, a message popped up saying something like the volume was corrupt and I should backup and reformat. Last night, everything pretty much stopped working. Any access to that volume caused the machine to completely lock up. Spotlight was saying, and still is, that there are a little over 2 million hours left to index.

MacBook :: Computer Dropped - Hard Drive Lockups / Failure

Sep 9, 2009

I'm pretty sure the problems we're having with a white MacBook are due to hard drive problems, but I thought I'd get a second opinion:

- Computer was dropped on a hard floor
- Started making whirring noises and would occasionally lock up or suffer long periods of the spinning wheel
- Disk Utility check, after booting up from the CD, cam back with no errors
- Decided to wipe it and reinstall anyway
- Snow Leopard got stuck halfway through installing, so rebooted. Installation then carried on no problems.
- Still suffering periods of the spinning wheel - it 'shudders' sometimes, rather than spinning smoothly. There have also been a couple of lockups.

OS X :: How To Merge The Disk On The Apple Support Section Under Troubleshooting Articles For Disk Utility

Oct 7, 2010

After I erase the hard disk it shows 74.5gb free, almost. It says there is 42.3mb of space being used by 2 files which I understand are used for read write or partitioning or whatever.

When I then leave disk utility and go to the actual installer, the destination disk (untitled - 74.5gb) shows only 73.9gb free space. What is taking up an additional 500mb of space on the hard drive?

Apple support told me that somehow the disk has been altered and I lost space on the disk or I am now using a seperate partition that isn't showing up. Disk utility shows only one partition with 74.5gb free space. He told me I can find information about how to 'merge' the disk on the apple support section under troubleshooting articles for disk utility. I have been unable to locate this information.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Start From System Cd

Jun 9, 2012

I am having a problem with my Macbook Pro (OS6.8.8 2.4 GHz Intel core i5). I tried running through all maintenance procedures using Onyx and also tried disc utility to verify disc. Disc utility said to reboot from mother OS and repair harddisc but I can't start up from cd. Tried normal hold down 'C' during restart and also set disc as start-up disc in system preferences but only get a blank screen. The computer when booted from the hard disc (does boot but computer acting 'odd') shows the cd in the cd player and the cd opens so the cd player seems to be working. Also tried an external usb cd player and tried to boot the computer from the cd using this route but get same symptom - just a blank screen and after a short time the cd player stops spinning.

I am concluding that it is not a hardware problem but some software problem that is preventing me from booting from the cd.

Mac :: 2006 MacBook Won't Start In My System?

Aug 28, 2010

I have a 2006 Core Duo MacBook. I shut it down the other day and nothing unusual happened. But, now when I push the power button there's no response at all. Nothing. No lights, no response, no chimes, no screen flicker.Yes, I've read all posts I can find on this and nothing has helped. I've followed the SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and can't zap PRAM since it doesn't even chime. Battery shows a full five lights and the MagSafe cord shows a green LED. I've tried all sorts of booting with just battery, just power, leaving both out overnight but can't get any sort of response. I don't hear any fan motion or HDD whirring up. The power button doesn't seem to be stuck though--it's flush with the case and still gives that slight tactile "click" when depressed. I checked that the RAM's set properly.

Mac Pro :: System Drive Not Boot From Start Up

Mar 15, 2010

I have a Mac Pro, Intel quad core, with several HDs, 2 of which are bootable. One runs Mac OSX 10.4.9 (and houses Pro Tools HD 7.4) and the other runs 10.5.8 (with Pro Tools HD 8.0.2). The Tiger disk is absolutely fine but the Leopard disk will not boot from a stand-still. It can be booted from Startup Disk in System Preferences but if it was the last drive in use then trying boot from off results in a permanent hang on the grey screen. A workaround is holding ALT on startup and choose the Tiger disk but this shouldn't be happening so has anyone experienced this and solved it? I'm trying to avoid a full re-instal but that is an option.

Mac Pro :: Start Up Not Reliable & Occasional System Freeze

Jul 22, 2008

My Mac stats: Mac G5 DT/1.8 GHz / OS 10.5.4 / 2.0 GB SDRAM with all current system downloads; I bought this Mac new from Mac connection approximately three years ago. The problems I've been experiencing for many months:

1. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac will fail to start up causing me to do a forced shutdown by holding in the power button. If I delay doing this for a while (a minute or two), the Mac fan comes on rather loud. After a minute or so after the forced shutdown, I try start up again and Mac starts up OK.

2. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac 'freezes'/cursor will not move, causing me do perform the forced shutdown as described above.

3. When I wake Mac from Sleep mode, there is a 'pop/snap' sound which is very audible depending on the volume setting I am using.

NOTE: In case I had any defective SDRAM modules, I replaced them with new high quality ram modules.

OS X :: New And Used Macbook Startup Options - Cannot Start The System?

I bought a used macbook yesterday morning and everything seemed to be working properly at first, but by the end of the day it started having a problem when booting up. 2 gigs of RAM (updated by previous owner)160 gig Hard Drive (updated by previous owner)Everything else is the same as this listing. The problem: when booting up, the screen turns on, but just remains white, without showing the apple logo and spinning circle. I left it like that for a good 10 minutes, and it never continued to boot, it just stayed in that state. I shut it off, then started it in safe mode, which worked fine. From there I restarted it, and it worked normally. The same thing happened again later (white screen, turn off, boot in safe mode, boot normally).
