Hardware :: Which Enclosure And HD Suitable For G4
Dec 30, 2009
Which Enclosure and HD for my iBook G4? I need to find a good enclosure and HD to use with my iBook G4. I'm running Tiger, OSX 10.4. I need to use the external HD to boot the computer, and also need two Firewire and one USB connections, so I can connect other external drives.
I've been using this enclosure: Rosewill RX30-U2FA Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 (USB1.1) 1 port (4pin) FireWire 400 (1394a) 2 ports (6pin) External Enclosure
with this HD: HDD 300GB MAXTOR 16M ATA133 7L300R0 for over four years.
I need a new external HD, because our neighbor was messing around with the circuit breakers and flipped the switches, which cut our power and damaged my external HD!

I am looking to upgrade the RAM in my Mac Pro (Quad 2.66GHz) but the prices (even Crucial) are a bit out my league at the moment. However I was doing some surfing tonight and found these: [URL] Would these be suitable, the price looks pretty good and it would give my Mac a much needed boost.

I am looking around for a reasonably priced PC monitor to use as an extended desktop/palette monitor for my iMac 27".I have a range of video adaptors so should be able to connect to most cables but it seems that PC monitors these days come with VGA/HDMI connectors and I am not finding many with DVI which would be my preference. I understand HDMI is basically for TV/Video connections, how good is it for a computer display?
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), The closest you'll ever get to there, is here.

Over the christmas holidays I decided to re-install my good old PowerPC Mac mini. Over this procedure by accident I attached the power cable from the Mac mini C2D (2007 model) to the PPC mini. Suddenly I noticed a hard humming noise coming from inside the Mac mini that didn't vanished after some shutdowns. I opened the Mac mini and noticed that the noise was coming from the fan. I cleaned it as good as possible but the noise ist still there. All other components are acting quite usual. But the fan is still making this newly humming noise.
So I think I have damaged the fan somehow and now I'm looking for a suitable replacement. Maybe you have any idea which fan's are good and silent?

I'm a graphic designer looking for a new home office computer. I work in print media mainly, using CS5 (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign), and have been considering the Macbook Pro 13" for its combination of performance and portability; a 24" monitor will be connected to the MBP. I could go for the Macbook Pro 15" for better performance but I really like the portability factor. So my true question is: Is the Macbook Pro 13" suitable for this type of work?

Basically I can't decided between the 11 inch or 13 inch Air and thats due to the fact of not having any idea if the 11 inch will be capable of handling the tasks that I need. I have a ton of 1080p/720p mkv movies that I always watch on my current early 2006 macbook, that's a must do for my upgrade to an Air. The second part of what I will be doing is having a dump site for my pictures.
I have a T1i and take a ton of photo's nothing professional or anything, but as a poorly touched hobby. I have been considering using iphoto/Aperture since its only 79.99 in the new app store. I am just slightly concerned if the little 11inch can handle simple aperture photo edits, to fix crappily taken photos. The ability to play my movies is the most important issue, the whole picture thing can be sorted out on the Quad core Pc in the office.

I notice people saying to use water when cleaning the screen, well that just smears the smudges. So, is there any product I can use such as Windex, 409, etc, on the screen of my iMac or is my only option the absurdly overpriced cleaners from the Apple Store?

I have a early 09 Mac Pro with the 4870 and I just received the GT 120 so I can run dual 24 ACD. When I install the GT 120 do I want to install it in the slot right above my 4870? Or 2 slots which would be slot 3.
If I install right above my 4870 then the GT120 would be right on top of the 4870 and doesn't seem like there would be much air flow getting above the card. Or does it not even matter which slot I install the GT120?

I think my PRAM battery is dead (date resets to January 1st 1970 when started up with main battery removed) but I can't find a replacement PRAM anywhere (I'm in the UK). According to iFixit the part number is 820-1686-A - is this the only PRAM module that will work in my machine? (I've seen lots of other similar looking parts on eBay, but with different part numbers). Also, is it not possible to actually just replace the battery, not the whole circuitboard? It looks like a regular watch battery I could pick up for $5 from the pic.

I am a print designer currently using a dinosaur 1.6 G5 tower and CS2. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I also shoot in RAW with my Nikon D80 and currently do most of my editing at my office computer because it is faster. I work primarily in vector graphics which is why my 1.6 is "working." After 3 HD problems and lost data, It is time for an upgrade. I will miss my 20" matte cinema display and will have to find a new way of working in my bright living situation. Yes, there will be color shift on that glossy screen but I use Pantone swatch books.
All this hype for i5/i7 chips is coming mostly from motion designers or gamers which I am not. Coming from a 1.6, I think the base model Duo will blow me away. My office machine is a 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 5 GB, 10.4.11, so the iMac should be equal to my machine at work and probably a bit better. (depending on snow lep lag) I hope to keep the machine for as long as It runs. I also will update to CS4, if that matters. I know the base Duo will be a HUGE upgrade to my current fossil and it is obvious I hold on to my machines for awhile.

I have created a "newsletter" using Mac iwork Pages publication. The newsletter includes text and pictures. I would like to email it to over a hundred people so need it to be a small file. At the moment it is approx 3.2 MB. I tried compressing it to zip but it is still way too large. I downloaded Graphic Converter but cannot work out how to use it with Pages. Or is there an easier way?

Someone I know wants to buy a macbook air. I've replaced hard drives on Sony's, lenovos, macbooks etc. But I know some Sony's come with special "non-standard" drive sizes. Does anyone know if the Seagate Momentus laptop drive will fit in the newest macbook air? I saw on anandtech you could replace it on the previous model but I thought I'd double check as she needs much more space than 120GB that apple offers.

As a full-time professional photographer, I use 20" iMac Intel 2GHz Core Duo machines (the original Intel iMacs), with the matte screens and maxed out with 2 gb of ram for Photoshop editing daily (CS3). I have found that the matte screens are awesome for imaging work... very accurate colors, no perceptible undesireable variation in color or brightness at different viewing angles. I've been verrry happy with these iMacs for production in my portrait photography studio.
NOW... recently I've considered upgrading one of my original 20" Intel iMacs to a current production 24" iMac for the larger screen area, 4 GB ram capability, and faster processor (filter processing!!!), but have been hesitant because of all the bad press I've read about using the glossy screens for professional color work. Complaints I've seen refer to distracting reflections of room/ambient lighting, a false, over-exagerated color saturation, un-even color/brightness across the full area of the display, light leaks, and dead pixels. What has happened to our beloved iMac?
If these criticisms are valid, I think Apple made a big mistake going from matte to glossy screens with the iMacs. I understand that Apple targets iMacs as just consumer machines... but the fact remains that a LOT of professional imaging people have chosen matte screen iMacs for professional work and the older matte screens were perfect for that.

I am planning to purchase the 2012 iMac when it's released. I currently have a 2010 iMac with 4670M which I sometimes play games on. At the moment I switch to Boot Camp for playing Windows games. I wonder if I could just use Parallels with the 2012 iMac, with its more powerful hardware, to avoid rebooting each time I want to play a game. Do you think this would work well with "graphically complex" Windows games like Rage, Stalker, DiRT Showdown, even Battlefield 3? Is there DirectX 11 support?Â

I would like to know if it's possible to disassemble both this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1185267958970 and this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1185271084002 drive to remove from the casing and put in a Mac Pro. I've seen pictures here: http://www.carltonbale.com/2008/01/w...ing-the-drive/ on how to disassemble the case, but am wondering if it will work in a Mac Pro.

I have an Transmit brand enclosure, in which I have installed a 30GB HD. When transferring files, mostly big files (200MB) the system (Mac OSX 10.4.11) hangs. I have to restart it, to use it properly! After putting the drive to other macs, I realized that there is no problem with other computers. Therefore this must be a Mac OSX system issue. Is there a way to check this, make a system examination though some utility or? Where do I start?

I have a 1TB x 2 setup in a Guardian Maximus enclosure, which i like, but it is noisy. Per OWC support, the noise levels i have are pretty normal.
The noise is not server room noisy, I will admit that
However, this setup is connected to my Mac Mini, always on and serving up my iTunes content to 2 apple TVs. Previously, I had been using 500gb and 750gb external drives, no RAID. Both previous drives (Seagate free agents) ran perfectly quiet enough.
The big thing is, in my apartment the setup is on my TV center, and that is close to our bed. the Seagate drives were inaudible, the only thing noticed was the orange light if i didnt shut the light off in the config. But you couldn't hear the drive noise otherwise. Not so with the Maximus. Its a constant hum, and the wife has now commented about it. Which means i need to either
a-quiet the maximus
or
b-replace it with something quieter.
so I wanted to see if anyone had experience with the maximus, alongside something like the WD Mirrored options, the Lacie RAID1 options or anything else. $250 is about my budget for this.but now i am wondering if i shouldn't just get a 1tb solo drive, use that for the main iTunes drive and then fire up the RAID1 enclosure once a week and back up the media (my main reason for the RAID was getting concerned about losing all my ripped content).

Now, for some reason, it likes to constantly self-cycle, I can hear the hard drives trying to work. I tried USB and it does the same thing. I'm wondering if it's a chipset issue on the OWC enclosure.
I have a seagate 1 TB w/ 32 mb cache in my mac pro as additional backup. I was going to try that in a different enclosure, but I don't want to do that if i'm going to get the same results.

I have a 325 gb WD 3.5 IDE hard drive that I got for a replacement for a failed drive on an old Dell PC. I have since retired that computer and wanted to use the drive as an external drive, so I purchased a USB 2.0 IDE enclosure from Rosewill and installed the drive.
I partitioned/formatted the drive using Disk Utility and it looks good--mounts and everything. However, whenever I attempt to backup my using either SilverKeeper or SuperDuper!, it stalls after a few files.
I've tried it using a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11, a Mac Mini with Leopard and a MBP--nothing works. Time Machine stalls as well.
