I have an old laptop hd which i have in an enclosure. The problem is the enclosure uses a Y-usb cable (think thats what its called - the cable that plugs into 2 usb ports on your comp) - you see where i'm going?!
Anyone know of an enclosure for a 2.5" sata drive which will work from just one usb port so i can use it with my soon to be macbook air?
I got a great deal on an external HD enclosure. Such a good deal in fact that I bought 2 of them with the idea of putting my two 500 GB SATA drives from my Quad G5 into them ( I'm replacing the G5's original drives with new 750 GB drives). When I received the enclosures I realized that they are wired for the older IDE type drive with the 40 pin ribbon connector. I can't get a refund on the enclosures. Is there a simple way to convert these enclosures to accept SATA drives?

I'm thinking of upgrading my HDD on my new Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo) and I'm wondering if this is possible. I would like to clone the old to the new without having to buy a USB or Firewire to SATA adapter. Would it be possible to disconnect the Super Drive(CD/DVD) and connect up the new drive, use Super Duper to clone, then replace the old with the new and reconnect the Super Drive?
I've searched the forums to see if anyone has tried this but I didn't find anything. I'm not even sure if there is a second SATA port that would work for a HDD. I know the Super Drive is a SATA because it's listed when I look at system info.
I've seen a lot of folks using USB or Firewire to do this so that's my backup plan but it would seem if I can get both drives connected this would be pretty straight forward.
So I bought that LG HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drive for my Mac Pro. I used the extra SATA ports near the fan to install it, and it works great while using OSX, but it won't work in Windows.
I read somewhere about enabling AHCI or something like that in Windows so it can recognize the spare SATA port, and therefore recognize the Blu-Ray drive, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me.
It's awful confusing...
I want to be able to rip my Blu-Ray movies onto my computer to pop them onto the tv, but the only hurdle is having Windows recognize the drive. Any help at all would be very appreciated.
I'm replacing my 320GB HD from my late '08 MBP with a new Hitachi 500GB unit.
It would be a shame to let the old HD go to waste, so I was wondering what SATA enclosures you guys and girls are using? Preferably something that will connect to my MBP using either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. There are so many out there, I don't want to buy the wrong one and be disappointed with the quality. 1) Can I use a Sata port doubler (Do they exist?) to run 2 hard drives through one sata port. (The bandwidth is there)
2) Failing the above can I use a cable linking a sata drive to the airport express slot? (is it PCI express?)
I found a MacBook Air Rev. A 1.6GHz/4200rpm 80GB for 1299 at bestbuy, brand new, factory sealed. One could argue that I'm OCD, and I just can't stand the sluggishness of the eye candy in Leopard and cover flow chopiness (it isn't that bad really, but it just irks me.) And yes, I've enabled QuartzGL, and no I can't stand the tearing that occurs when beamsync is disabled.

I have a 325 gb WD 3.5 IDE hard drive that I got for a replacement for a failed drive on an old Dell PC. I have since retired that computer and wanted to use the drive as an external drive, so I purchased a USB 2.0 IDE enclosure from Rosewill and installed the drive.
I partitioned/formatted the drive using Disk Utility and it looks good--mounts and everything. However, whenever I attempt to backup my using either SilverKeeper or SuperDuper!, it stalls after a few files.
I've tried it using a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11, a Mac Mini with Leopard and a MBP--nothing works. Time Machine stalls as well.
I went to the applestore and, after purchasing one to one, was turned down for a data transfer from my old macbook pro to my new macbook pro. The "genius" recommended that I buy an external hard drive from newegg and get some screwdrivers and do it myself. So I did, except (I think) he told me to get the wrong kind of external hard drive enclosure and now I'm just really upset because I went through the process and got the hard drive out of the old macbook pro perfectly. What do I need to (re)buy to make this data transfer work?

Here is my current configuration: SSD is in optical driveStock hard drive stays same as it was Now I am planning to upgrade SSD and install the drive in the place of stock hard drive instead of in optical drive (to take advantage of higher speed). But the stock hard drive doesn't fit in to the caddy that i bought. It worked great for SSD, but not the internal hard drive.
1) Can someone recommend suitable caddy model, (hopefully cheaper one). Or if i take out the screws from hard drive, it may fit into the caddy that i have.
2) My admin user is configured in SSD, which should not have any problem after migration. But my regular user is in stock hard drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOkay so I'm thinking of putting a Intel SSD in my MacBook Pro 13" as soon the next generation is launched thus removing the SuperDrive in order to fit both drives. I haven't used it a lot of times but a few times I do need it and that's why I'm now asking this question.
What external DVD enclosure will work with the MBP SuperDrive if any and how will i eject the DVDs. I'm not going to shell out a 100 bucks plus shipping to Sweden for the MCE Optibay so that's out of question, however cheaper ebay alternative that ships to Sweden with reasonable shipping is okay.

I want to move that hard drive to my Time Capsule via a USB enclosure and use a 60 GB OCZ SSD hard drive in my MacBook. Do you think this is a good idea speed-wise? Also, does anyone have any experience with using iTunes or viewing videos with a hard drive plugged into a Time Capsule that's a few rooms away? I'm probably only going to use the wireless hard drive to listen to music and maybe move files to it once in a while. Would that be too slow? I would unplug it from the Time Capsule and plug it into my Mac to transfer big files or install software that's on the external drive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a SATA hard drive that works perfectly when connected through an external USB enclosure but whenever it's plugged into the internal SATA connector on my MacBook Pro I receive the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." any time I attempt to move or copy a file to it.
This doesn't happen with any other hard drive I connect internally, so I don't believe it's an issue with the internal cable.
I have made sure all permissions are set to allow reading and writing to the drive as well as selecting the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option in the Get Info panel.

However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? I've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?
