Laptops :: Battery Recognition

Jan 19, 2011

I recently spilled coffee on my mid 2010 2.4ghz macbook pro. After drying out, the computer worked fine, although the battery was not recognized. Since apple does not cover water damage i bought a replacement battery and installed it today. After starting up the problem is not solved. there is still an X through the battery indicator and if i unplug the laptop it shuts down instantly. When i turn it on, the status LED on the front blinks 6 times before the laptop actually boots up. I have reset the SMC, NVRAM and PRAM.
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Laptops :: Macbook Pro With Finished Battery?

Jan 28, 2010

I've got a late '06 Macbook Pro, running OS 10.4.11, 2GB RAM, 2.16GHz processor. The battery recently died, but that's not a problem as I run it via the power adapter when at home.

Problem is, since the battery packed up, the computer itself is running slower than when the battery was installed. Is this usual?

It's a dualcore processor, and was previously fast enough to watch HD movies, but now HD movies are jerky, and the whole overall operating system seems noticeably more sluggish.

I have heard that some of the newer laptops don't have the back up battery. Does this one, and how do I get to it to change it?

Laptops :: MBP Battery Performance Declining More Rapidly

Feb 26, 2009

I've been looking for some info on the older 2007 MacBook Pro battery specs and stats, etc., but have been somewhat unsuccessful. Lately my MBP has been draining the battery at a much quicker pace than normal. This machine is only a year old now (however CoconutBattery says the battery is 16 months old). Still, the battery capacity shouldn't have diminished too significantly. Before I restored the Mac and installed the Windows 7 Beta, I could average 3-4 hours on a full charge. Normally, I would keep WiFi + Bluetooth enabled, an external monitor attached, several USB peripherals plugged in, and the main display would be set to maximum brightness. 3-4 hours was pretty nice considering the amount of power the machine could have been using.

After I partitioned my hard drive, the battery life was cut in half on the OS X side. Windows 7 power management was even worse. I figured that there may have been extra disk activity causing this problem. After I finished toying with Redmond's new OS, I removed the Windows partition and moved on from there. I know after I removed the partition, I was getting excellent battery life initially. Once that short period ended, it went downhill from there. The battery meter has become surprisingly accurate as of late; in a minute or so, you can easily watch the percentages drop 1-2%, which appears abnormal. I can manage 3 hours on a single charge at best, but I usually get less. I decided to take greater care in cycling the battery, in hopes of nursing it back to health, so to speak. It doesn't appear to be working so well. Enabling WiFi and other peripherals only drains more power, but turning them off again adds only 5 minutes. So when I'm using several devices at once, I'm lucky to get a little over 2 hours. Turning off menu items and background apps does nothing either.

It's been this way for several weeks now, and yet, iStat, System Profiler, and CoconutBattery all report seemingly acceptable and consistent battery info: 86% Battery health, around 180 charge cycles, and the capacity is around 4700mAh (out of the original 5500) for now. The computer believes all is well. Performance says otherwise. I'd like to think that physically the battery seems to be okay. I've cycled and calibrated it several times. I have read reviews that indicate that Santa Rosa MacBooks with new batteries have averaged similar runtimes to the ones I experience now, but I know mine has usually bested all of the reported tests. It just seems wrong for the average runtime to go from almost 4 hours to 2 when the battery is (supposed to be) maintaining the same health level. I have AppleCare if it needs to be replaced, since this drastic change in usage time is very noticeable and counterproductive for me, but it could just be the computer (or me for that matter). Is this behavior normal for a battery of this age? What should I look into? If this is normal behavior I can live with it, but I would prefer to get as much out of the one I have.

Laptops :: Can MBP Polymer Battery Be Damaged Through Overcharged

Dec 14, 2010

i know that its generally recommended to not overcharge batteries. i have e.g. seen several cellphone batteries going kaput within a few months since people leave their phones on 'overnight' charge.so i am wondering if the same applies for the polymer batteries in my MBP ?however, if i am not mistaken apple uses some kind of sophisticated electronic monitoring to keep a tab on the state of charge or discharge of the battery.

does this mean that there is no chance of the battery getting damaged through overcharging ?basically, what good practises can i use to ensure that the polymer battery lasts me a long time ?

Laptops :: Battery Not Recognized Or Show Zero Percent Charge

Dec 4, 2009

I believe the mechanism utilized by my laptop to route power either from the battery or the AC adapter, is faulty. Sometimes when the battery is connected to the laptop, the battery is not recognized and the battery icon has an 'X' in it, other times it shows a charge %. Just recently with a full battery, I removed the AC adapter from the laptop and the laptop immediately powered off as if the battery was not in place.

Assessed:
(equipment age) new linear power cable and new battery purchased in september
(connection) linear connection seems stable
(battery) charges and holds a charge
Possibly linear > battery transistor issue? Repair Options?

Laptops :: MacBook Pro Loses Battery Charge With Cover Closed?

Nov 13, 2010

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with a solid state (flash memory) disk. The battery life is good while I'm using it, but if I leave it with the cover off for a few days (asleep, I assume), it'll be mostly discharged when I open it up. I assume this isn't normal - it shouldn't be losing that much charge when closed and hibernating. I don't have "wake for ethernet access" checked, if that makes a difference. What's going on - why won't it hibernate?

Mac Pro :: MAC Pro Ram Recognition

I purchased a Mac Pro two years ago and had additional ram installed at COMP USA (had an APPLE dealer in the store) The ram upgrade gave me a total of 9 gig. When I check (About This Mac) it confirms the 9 gig of ram. I was setting my preferences in Adobe CS 4 and when allocating the percent of ram to be dedicated to CS4 my choice was centered around 3 gig. Same as my Mac Book Pro. I elected 70% of 3 gig of ram.

Software :: Javascript Key Recognition

Oct 26, 2010

I have a Javascript file that detects key codes, but it is set to react to Windows keyboard keys. How would I adapt it to work with a Mac keyboard? Code: // Hotkeys document.addEventListener('keydown', function(e){ if(e.shiftKey && !e.ctrlKey && e.altKey){ switch(e.keyCode){ // Edit styles with Alt+Shift+E case 69: editStyles(); break; // Unblock elements with Alt+Shift+U case 85: unblockEle(); break; // Block element with Alt+Shift+B case 66: blockEle(); break; // Unblock latest element with Alt+Shift+L case 76: unblockEle(true); break; // Block elements (don't use nth-child) with Alt+Shift+W case 87: blockEle(true); break; } } }, false); The Alt key is the problem. I guess the Alt/Option key on a Mac keyboard is not the same as the Alt key for Windows. What name would I give to have that key recognized?

OS X :: SL: No Automatic External Display Recognition

Aug 31, 2009

What is it with Apple and still not having implemented automatic recognition of external display when hooking up to the MBP. Seriously? Do we really need to close/ open the lid in order to shut off the MBP screen. Why does it work in Windows (via Bootcamp) and not in OS-X? I was hoping this would be fixed in SL but still no.

MacBook Pro :: Slot Stopped Mounting SD Cards - No Recognition

Mar 29, 2012

I was just going between sd cards, trying to empty one out to use for something. Then, suddenly, it stopped mounting. None of the cards that previously mounted before suddenly stopped. As if the SD slot itself had been gone bye-bye. No recognition. SD cards are just fine. We have about dozen of them but it all mounts perfectly on other two macs. Obviously, it's my MBP's problem. I have rebooted two times, with no luck. I inserted them slowly and fast and anyway I could.
