Laptops :: Back Up Finish Battery?
Apr 6, 2010
I have a white macbook core2 duo. The main battery is dead and I have been using it with the power brick.
Lately when I plug in and start up I have to go through the reset time and date etc.
I have heard that some of the newer laptops don't have the back up battery. Does this one, and how do I get to it to change it?

I turned on my rev C MBA using the battery power. It booted properly but soon after I logged in, my MBA suddenly went off (as if I holded the power button for a few seconds).
Then, I've decided to power cycle it. Still the same thing: it shut downs unexpectedly. The moment it shuts down is quite random, but I cannot use the Air on battery for more than a few minutes (less than 5 minutes actually).
Hence, I decided to charge it overnight. This morning, to my surprise, the charging light on the adapter was amber (not green).
So, it seems like I cannot recharge my battery. I've reset the PMU and this doesn't help. Please note that I haven't used the MBA for a few weeks, leaving it unplugged.
I don't know whether it had some impact or not on the battery.

I've had the Rev A 64SSD for about 4-6 weeks (brand new from Apple), and last night when it reached low battery with 18 minutes left I plugged in the charger.
A couple of hours later I unplugged it and it still only had 18 minutes remaining. That was bizarre because it was obviously plugged in and switched on (the screen goes brighter once the charger is plugged in).
I tried again this morning and the same thing It only stays on if it's plugged in!
Do I need to return it? Can I go into the Apple store if I bought it online? If it does have to be sent away, do they provide a replacement?

I have a battery from an older MacBook I'm trying to use as a backup with my new MacBook. They are both white, same size, both Intel Macs.
The battery certainly fits. The problem is, it shows no bars even after charging for a while. The percentage says zero and doesn't change even after 45 minutes or so.
Is this battery ruined, or needs to charge all night? Or could it be that it doesn't work with this computer, even though they seem to be interchangeable?

Can someone look at the information I've attached and extrapolate if this means my battery is "close to" DEAD?
Slowly over the last 3 months my computer shows a 100% charge and when I uplug the adapter it gets to about 90% (within 3-4 minutes) and then shuts down without a warning.

I recently spilled coffee on my mid 2010 2.4ghz macbook pro. After drying out, the computer worked fine, although the battery was not recognized. Since apple does not cover water damage i bought a replacement battery and installed it today. After starting up the problem is not solved. there is still an X through the battery indicator and if i unplug the laptop it shuts down instantly. When i turn it on, the status LED on the front blinks 6 times before the laptop actually boots up. I have reset the SMC, NVRAM and PRAM.
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a late '06 Macbook Pro, running OS 10.4.11, 2GB RAM, 2.16GHz processor. The battery recently died, but that's not a problem as I run it via the power adapter when at home.
Problem is, since the battery packed up, the computer itself is running slower than when the battery was installed. Is this usual?
It's a dualcore processor, and was previously fast enough to watch HD movies, but now HD movies are jerky, and the whole overall operating system seems noticeably more sluggish.

I've been looking for some info on the older 2007 MacBook Pro battery specs and stats, etc., but have been somewhat unsuccessful. Lately my MBP has been draining the battery at a much quicker pace than normal. This machine is only a year old now (however CoconutBattery says the battery is 16 months old). Still, the battery capacity shouldn't have diminished too significantly. Before I restored the Mac and installed the Windows 7 Beta, I could average 3-4 hours on a full charge. Normally, I would keep WiFi + Bluetooth enabled, an external monitor attached, several USB peripherals plugged in, and the main display would be set to maximum brightness. 3-4 hours was pretty nice considering the amount of power the machine could have been using.
After I partitioned my hard drive, the battery life was cut in half on the OS X side. Windows 7 power management was even worse. I figured that there may have been extra disk activity causing this problem. After I finished toying with Redmond's new OS, I removed the Windows partition and moved on from there. I know after I removed the partition, I was getting excellent battery life initially. Once that short period ended, it went downhill from there. The battery meter has become surprisingly accurate as of late; in a minute or so, you can easily watch the percentages drop 1-2%, which appears abnormal. I can manage 3 hours on a single charge at best, but I usually get less. I decided to take greater care in cycling the battery, in hopes of nursing it back to health, so to speak. It doesn't appear to be working so well. Enabling WiFi and other peripherals only drains more power, but turning them off again adds only 5 minutes. So when I'm using several devices at once, I'm lucky to get a little over 2 hours. Turning off menu items and background apps does nothing either.
It's been this way for several weeks now, and yet, iStat, System Profiler, and CoconutBattery all report seemingly acceptable and consistent battery info: 86% Battery health, around 180 charge cycles, and the capacity is around 4700mAh (out of the original 5500) for now. The computer believes all is well. Performance says otherwise. I'd like to think that physically the battery seems to be okay. I've cycled and calibrated it several times. I have read reviews that indicate that Santa Rosa MacBooks with new batteries have averaged similar runtimes to the ones I experience now, but I know mine has usually bested all of the reported tests. It just seems wrong for the average runtime to go from almost 4 hours to 2 when the battery is (supposed to be) maintaining the same health level. I have AppleCare if it needs to be replaced, since this drastic change in usage time is very noticeable and counterproductive for me, but it could just be the computer (or me for that matter). Is this behavior normal for a battery of this age? What should I look into? If this is normal behavior I can live with it, but I would prefer to get as much out of the one I have.

i know that its generally recommended to not overcharge batteries. i have e.g. seen several cellphone batteries going kaput within a few months since people leave their phones on 'overnight' charge.so i am wondering if the same applies for the polymer batteries in my MBP ?however, if i am not mistaken apple uses some kind of sophisticated electronic monitoring to keep a tab on the state of charge or discharge of the battery.
does this mean that there is no chance of the battery getting damaged through overcharging ?basically, what good practises can i use to ensure that the polymer battery lasts me a long time ?

I believe the mechanism utilized by my laptop to route power either from the battery or the AC adapter, is faulty. Sometimes when the battery is connected to the laptop, the battery is not recognized and the battery icon has an 'X' in it, other times it shows a charge %. Just recently with a full battery, I removed the AC adapter from the laptop and the laptop immediately powered off as if the battery was not in place.
Assessed:
(equipment age) new linear power cable and new battery purchased in september
(connection) linear connection seems stable
(battery) charges and holds a charge
Possibly linear > battery transistor issue? Repair Options?

I bought non-unibody mbp in Oct 2008. During the last few weeks, the battery started loosing its capacity. So, I did the calibration of the battery as mentioned in Apple website. Didn't help.
I installed Coconut battery to check its true capacity. Here is the screenshot,
I don't have an applecare protection as it past one year. Alternatively, I have extended warranty with my MBNA Platinum card.
Should I contact Apple? Is this part will be replaced by Apple? Or, should I go through the long procedure of MBNA extended warranty process?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with a solid state (flash memory) disk. The battery life is good while I'm using it, but if I leave it with the cover off for a few days (asleep, I assume), it'll be mostly discharged when I open it up. I assume this isn't normal - it shouldn't be losing that much charge when closed and hibernating. I don't have "wake for ethernet access" checked, if that makes a difference. What's going on - why won't it hibernate?

I calibrated my macbook battery the other day and it went down to 97% (shock horror), its 73 cycles and 8 months old. In desperation I smashed it with a hammer hoping it would fix it. just joking I actually drained it down to 80% and then charged again, repeated this three times. After the first time the battery life when to 4058 mAh, then the second time it went to 4090 mAh and after the third time it rised again to 4126 mAh. Original capacity is 4100 mAh

I was installing the new Mac OSX 10.7 update for lion and also another update for my airport extreme base station. After an hour on the stage of the install that says it is installing components and moving components into place, it appeared to have frozen up. I held the power button down and started it up again and now it just makes the start up sound but never starts up. It just has a bright screen with the apple figure and the spinning clock like motion thing.

It will get to about 95% progress and then stops and I leave it for hours and it never finishes. I have iTunes 9.2 and have reinstalled it but no luck. I have had to restore my iTouch on a second computer that has no problems.

I just bought a new MacBook and I'm updating the software (ironic). The issue is that both software update and iTunes are saying there is a new version, but it won't finish the download. "The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs." There is a note at the bottom that iTunes: Partially Downloaded (22%)I've rebooted twice, and I have looked in the download folder, but I can not find this partially downloaded file

For the past few days, I have been trying to import some photos from my Canon Rebel XT. The symptom is that after all photos are loaded from the camera, iPhoto displays 1 photo remaining and fails to complete. After a while, the camera times out and shuts off. iPhoto will now appear to be done, but in fact if you try to quit, it will refuse saying the import isn't finished. The only way to quit is to force a quit. While this is happening CPU will be 100% with 30% to the system, and 70% to iPhoto. You can leave this for days and it still will not complete.
I have tried importing from the camera directly, and directly from the compact flash with the same results.
I am running OSX 10.4.10 and iPhoto 6.0.6.

So I recently upgraded to OSX Lion and bought Deus Ex Human Revolution on the App Store. For the past two days I have been trying to download the game unsuccessfully. The first time I tried to download it, it downloaded the first 14 GB no problem but then It wouldn't continue past that, only saying that it was "Waiting." I then restarted my computer hoping to solve the problem and reopened the mac app store and it started the download all over again from the beginning. I Let it download through the night and when I woke up to check my Mac in the morning it said there was an error with the download. I restarted my mac again and am now trying to download it a third time in two days. As of right now it has download 8.9 GB out of 16.65 but it just stalled saying waiting for the past 45 minutes.... My internet connection is working perfectly throughout this entire time so I am at a loss to explain why this is happening.

I just bought Snow Leopard today and I am trying to install it on my MacBook (with intel processor). I have inserted the dvd and tried to install it but there seems to be a problem as it is written: "Time remaining about 45 minutes" and this doesn't change. The dvd has been running for over 2 hours now and I don't know what to do nor what is going on? I understood installation with Snow Leopard should be faster. Is it normal that it takes so long to install the operating system (more than 2 hours)? It should just be an upgrade as I have Leopard already installed. I also have Windows Vista installed on a disk partition. Does that make any problem? It shouldn't as at the beginning of the installation I chose Macintosh HD.
