OS X :: How To Retrieve Data Accidentally Overwritten By A Time Machine Backup

Apr 14, 2009

I connected my windows removable disk to my colleague's mac to transfer some data. Accidentally her system started a time machine backup on my removable disk. Although we stopped it during middle of the process, now my disk is no longer recognizable in windows and all I can see under a mac system is her backup file.

The process took a very short time. I wonder if it has deleted everything. Is there any chance I can get the overwritten data back? They are very important to me.

Besides, is it a common problem of time machine backup? It is too dangerous for the removable disks.

OS X :: Accidentally Removed SD Card While Zeroing Out Data

Apr 25, 2010

I just accidentally removed my SD card from my USB reader when I was zeroing out data from it. I've inserted it in again and have now zeroed out the data about 4 times in the MS-DOS format, now whenever I try to insert it into a camera or printer it will say it's not useable despite being able to use it on my Mac. Any ideas? I'd rather not have to go buy another SD card.

Mac Pro :: RAM Placement (800MHz ECC Introduced)

Jan 13, 2009

I'm going to be purchasing my 1st Mac within a week or two and I have a question about Mac Pro FB-DIMM Memory placement -- seeing that the Mac Pro comes with 2GB Memory (2x1 GB Sticks) standard and I'm going to be adding an extra 8 GB (4x2GB Sticks) to the system (from OWC for an extra kick seeing that memory prices are very affordable for an extra 8GBs). Would the proper way to insert the 10 GBs of memory be that the each of the 1 GB sticks would go on each riser on Slots A1 and B1 (the first slots on the riser), with the other sets of FB-DIMMs being placed in pairs on each of the two risers? I read the Mac Pro RAM Info at [URL:...] but I just wanted to clarify if I got this correct.

Mac Pro :: Accidentally Trashed Second Hard Drive In G4

Jul 3, 2010

One night when I was overly tired, I accidentally placed my second hard drive in the trash and emptied the trash in my old G4 Sawtooth (ignored warnings, etc.). This machine is not backed up because I only use it for practice. I don't need to retrieve the data on the hard drive, but I would like to re-format it and use SuperDuper to copy the start-up disk to what would now be a new second hard drive. I can't see the "lost" hard drive. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to locate the second hard drive to make it appear in "About this Mac" and on the desktop ? Do I need to physically remove it and re-install it in the case?

OS X :: Accidentally Unplugged External Hard Drive While In Use?

Aug 4, 2008

today, while i had the external hard drive in my macbook, i accidentally unplugged my external hard drive (the only file i had open from the external was a movie), and it was copying nothing at the time. i am wondering if this little error will cause data damage to the hard drive (this is the first or second time in the year plus i had it that i did not properly eject the hard drive) or do i have to do it over and over again for data damage to happen. i'm concerned because i think a file got wiped (but then again, that file had a bunch of problems reading before the power shutoff today and likely wouldn't have played anyway). should i be concerned about any data damage to my computer or am i fine?

MacBook Pro :: Intel Hard Drive Graphics Card - Drain Battery?

Jul 11, 2010

I keep seeing different anecdotes about people having lagging issues with the Intel HD graphics card. Is it really that bad? It would be a real pain to have to keep it on the nVidia card all the time, even when unplugged. I'm afraid that it will really drain the battery a lot faster than having the Intel on. Anyone have any estimates of this? It's one of the more worrying things about the Pro.

OS X :: How To Retrieve Data From Old Hard Drive

Jul 9, 2010

On my G4 I noticed the ? momentarily on start up, so I was going to boot from the disc to make a repair. The icon for the disc wouldn't come up on the desktop. Put a music CD in, didn't work. Was going to try to boot from 9.2 and now all I get is the floppy with the question mark. I've tried to get it to boot from the CD, (no luck) tried all I know to at least get it to boot up somewhere without luck. Broke down and bought a new imac, (it was time) and tried to retrieve my files and such from Mozy, but some critical ones are missing. Is there anyway to retrieve the data from my old hard drive, say take it out and go to the Apple store later today?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Recovering .dmg Files From An Accidentally Reformatted External Hard Drive?

May 3, 2012

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled).  The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the  table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds.  None of the  recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

Intel Mac :: Accidentally Moved Ms Office For 2011 To Trash, Get It Back?

Mar 4, 2012

I accidentally moved MS office 2011 to trash and cannot get it back... "put back" option is not in bold.  Have read many threads to drag it to desktop, applications etc but am afraid to do this.  should I just re-install the program as I have the disk?  but my main concern: if I reinstall, will I lose existing files of Word, Excel, PP?  I see them now converted to I-Works, will they remain? BTW - I have not backed up on time machine in over 2 months!

Intel Mac :: Accidentally Deleted Cache And Preferences Content From Library?

Apr 30, 2012

I read somewhere that deleting the content from those folders would speed up your Mac, which I believed until I did so...I emptied my trash, and everything was running smoothly for a few minutes...now my mac is EXTREMELY slow, it take FOREVER to open Applications and Documents, the volume keys are messed up and don't even work, I click it and 10 minutes later it responds...and everything is messed up! I thought if I gave it time, it will go back to normal, but no, it's been 4 days and nothing!

I don't have Time Machine set, nor do I have OS X Snow Leopard disk. Is there a way to solve this problem without buying a new disk? My parents lost the old disk, and we aren't financially comfortable right now..

OS X :: Retrieve Photos Off - External Hard Drive

Sep 3, 2009

I am a new mac user with a used Macbook. I believe it is from 2007, but has been upgraded several times. I got this Macbook from my boyfriend. He moved overseas for a religious mission. I am not able to call him, only send letters. I am having an issue with the laptop and need help asap. Before he left, he cleared EVERYTHING off his Macbook onto an external hard drive to give me more space. The only problem is, he cleared too much off! We had a year's worth of pictures of us that were stored only on his laptop. Now I don't have a single copy of those photo's. I have access to his external hard drive, but I have no idea how to use it to retrieve those pictures. I believe all his pictures are stored on iPhoto. I really want those pictures off his hard drive, but I don't want to do anything to mess up the rest of the valuable information he has on the external hard drive. How do I get copies of the pictures off the hard drive and back onto the Macbook?

MacBook Pro :: Retrieve Data From Broken Hard Drive?

Sep 3, 2014

My macbook suddenly crashed and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to turn it back in, a folder with a question mark kept flashing and by computer did not start. I looked up what might have been the cause of this, and I found out it was my hard drive or the cable that connects the drive to the mac. But I brought it to my school since they have tech support and they said that my hard drive is pretty much dead, but it can still be possible to retrieve the data from. I need to hand in my Extended essay in about one week and I already had done quite a lot for my essay. how to get all my data back, or past it to a new hard drive.
