My macbook suddenly crashed and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to turn it back in, a folder with a question mark kept flashing and by computer did not start. I looked up what might have been the cause of this, and I found out it was my hard drive or the cable that connects the drive to the mac. But I brought it to my school since they have tech support and they said that my hard drive is pretty much dead, but it can still be possible to retrieve the data from. I need to hand in my Extended essay in about one week and I already had done quite a lot for my essay. how to get all my data back, or past it to a new hard drive.

I'm dying to retrieve my info from my old HDD in my MBP but I keep getting all sorts of ideas/advice about the info on the HDD won't be retrievable if there's a BIOS/Firmware password there.... My main focus and concern is all my mp3, avi, jpg, Jpeg files; I care zero for the programs cause I can always get them back...

I have a Macbook PRO 17" with a 160GB hard drive. When I click on the "Macintosh" icon on my desktop and "get info" it says that my capacity is 148.73GB and that I've used 134.28GB only leaving me 14.45GB of availability. For the life of me I can't figure out how the 134GB is calculated. If I click on my username and "get info" the folder size is 103GB. So where is the other 30GB used up at?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy 6 months old macbook pro 13 hard drive was damaged. It was replaced at the apple store and in order to recover my information they suggested to buy a "cradle" to download the information or use it as a separate drive. Does anyone know the spec or point me in the right direction on where to find one?
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my G4 I noticed the ? momentarily on start up, so I was going to boot from the disc to make a repair. The icon for the disc wouldn't come up on the desktop. Put a music CD in, didn't work. Was going to try to boot from 9.2 and now all I get is the floppy with the question mark. I've tried to get it to boot from the CD, (no luck) tried all I know to at least get it to boot up somewhere without luck. Broke down and bought a new imac, (it was time) and tried to retrieve my files and such from Mozy, but some critical ones are missing. Is there anyway to retrieve the data from my old hard drive, say take it out and go to the Apple store later today?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a new mac user with a used Macbook. I believe it is from 2007, but has been upgraded several times. I got this Macbook from my boyfriend. He moved overseas for a religious mission. I am not able to call him, only send letters. I am having an issue with the laptop and need help asap. Before he left, he cleared EVERYTHING off his Macbook onto an external hard drive to give me more space. The only problem is, he cleared too much off! We had a year's worth of pictures of us that were stored only on his laptop. Now I don't have a single copy of those photo's. I have access to his external hard drive, but I have no idea how to use it to retrieve those pictures. I believe all his pictures are stored on iPhoto. I really want those pictures off his hard drive, but I don't want to do anything to mess up the rest of the valuable information he has on the external hard drive. How do I get copies of the pictures off the hard drive and back onto the Macbook?
View 5 Replies View Relatedhi there, I have iLife '06 that came on my macbook when i bought it mid 2007, but now, as you might have read in another post, I dropped my macbook and i might need to replace the hard drive. So if that is the option I have to take, how do I get iLife back once I have reinstalled the OS? Surely I don't have to purchase it?

I just want to do a full clean setup.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHow would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. I have lost all my data from my harts drive. The laptop is under warranty. I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I have now lost all my data, photos, files, music etc. NO backups, only simply because i did not know how to do them. Is there any way of getting the files back? All my work spreadsheets and accounts were also lost.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a very old iMac PowerPC G4 that I've been wanting to get rid of for a while. It's got 384 MB of RAM and a 700Mhz Processor, along with what I believe is a 50Gb Hard Drive (I haven't found a way to check for sure). It's running Mac OS X 10.2.8. So here's my question. Is there a way to totally flush the hard drive (or reformat it) to get rid of any sensitive data, but then be able to install or keep the OS files and get it running again?

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.
I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up
