I was installing windows XP to my macbook pro and accidentally formated the hard drive to a FAT32, now when I go to start-up the computer all I get is the grey screen. I have tried holding the "C" key when booting with OS/X disc but nothing happens.

I have two macs on the same network: on MacBookPro running MacOS10.5, one MacPro running MacOS10.4. I have a FAT32 partition on the MacBookPro hard drive. I want to connect to this from the MacPro. When I try to connect to server from the "Go" menu- I can connect to the other partitions of the hard drive, but not the FAT32 partition. I tried smb connection to this partition also- but no luck.

When it was done my whole hd was ntfs and my hfs partition was gone. i tried Testdisk and did a quick search and a deep search (took me 2 days), but no result. i also used Mac File Recovery to find a lose volume or lost files but no result. Now i'm using r-studio and performing a scan but i think it won't find my lost HFS+ partition.
Is there a way to save my HFS partition? My entire photo life is on it. should i bring it to a recovery specialist? or does someone has the answer? maybe reformat it as hfs?
I've just got a new external HD, but it's not being recognised by Mac OS X (10.5.7). I assumed it was because it was in a Windows format, so booted Windows, but it then turned out it wasn't formatted at all. What is the easiest way to make this an HFS+ (the Mac OS extended format), and how do I do it as I can't see it anywhere on the Mac (including Disk Utility)?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bout this Western Digital External Hard drive, Passport SE. Anyways, I formatted it to MS-DOS (FAT) so I can use on mac and/or windows. One of the other main reasons I bought it was so I could use it to watch videos on my Xbox 360.
Now I've seen tutorials online with windows how to re-format it to FAT32 so it works properly on xbox 360 but cannot figure it out on mac? On some of the tutorials they use certain programs to do it, is there something like that for mac I can download? Is fat32 and fat the same? I know there has to be a way for me to be able to format it to FAT32 using mac.
i'd like to format my lacie external hard drive with two partitions:
1. HFS+ partition as a bootable clone of my internal drive
2. FAT32 partition readable by any windows (and mac) machine
i'm creating my partitions with disk utility, but i hit a snag when choosing a partition scheme...apparently i cannot choose a different scheme for each partition.
so when i format the drive with GUID, the FAT32 partition is not even recognized by windows XP. but when i format the drive with master boot record (MBR), the HFS+ partition is not bootable...
I was repartitioning my hard drive in Boot Camp prior to installing windows xp, but changed my mind after I had chosen to partition in fat32 and did not complete the process. Now my hard drive sees itself as partitioned and I cannot use Boot Camp to install Windows XP. When I try using Boot Camp again, I get the message :
"the startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Backup the Disk and use Disk Utility to fromat as Mac Os..... Restore your info to the disc and try using Boot Camp again...."
My question is: is it even possible to reformat the hard drive from fat32 to nfts? I am new to MAC switching from Windows and wanted to install an embroidery software.

One night when I was overly tired, I accidentally placed my second hard drive in the trash and emptied the trash in my old G4 Sawtooth (ignored warnings, etc.). This machine is not backed up because I only use it for practice. I don't need to retrieve the data on the hard drive, but I would like to re-format it and use SuperDuper to copy the start-up disk to what would now be a new second hard drive. I can't see the "lost" hard drive. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to locate the second hard drive to make it appear in "About this Mac" and on the desktop ? Do I need to physically remove it and re-install it in the case?
View 5 Replies View RelatedData Rescue II was recommended to me recently to retrieve erased files from an external 1TB hard drive, where the files were accidentally erased whilst initializing another (now discovered as a faulty) external hard drive. I was led to believe by the sales person that the lost data could be recovered completely with no change, but now since using the software it seems this is not the case. As recommended, I scanned the drive using the scan specifically for deleted files, proceeded with the recovery (happy to see it had recovered all of the expected files, plus more) but then discovered that none of the files had their original file name (everything is now renamed with numbers relating to the file, and the file type). I have tried calling ProSoft several times now during their opening hours, and sent several emails to enquire further about the recovery process, but never receive an answer.
It would be great if anyone here has had a similar/same problem or knows if there is a way of retrieving the lost files with original file names intact. I fear that this software has left me with no choice but to open each file and rename individually, which is sure to be an epic task for the amount of files that were on the drive!
I am trying to access a PC formatted external hard drive, however when I attempt to mount it I get a message saying the drive is not recognized and if I want ti initialize, which i believe if I execute will remove the files I am trying access..Is there a way to access the files on the external hard drive...it is a avi file i need to edit.

I have a 1/3 full external drive that is currently formatted for MAC OS External.
I want to partition the drive in half and use the 2nd partition for Windows FAT32.
However, when I try to do this with Disk Utility it does not give me the FAT32 option.
I have an external hard drive that I was previously using on PC, having attempted to use it on a Mac, it will not write to it. I've found that I have to format to FAT32, which I think i can just about manage (yes, im a girl) but my concern is, if i format through the MAC, will i then lose what's on the hard disk as the tab says 'erase'? I have a lot of images on the hard disk so am a little petrified! Any advice for this really basic question would be appreciated!
View 7 Replies View Relatedtoday, while i had the external hard drive in my macbook, i accidentally unplugged my external hard drive (the only file i had open from the external was a movie), and it was copying nothing at the time. i am wondering if this little error will cause data damage to the hard drive (this is the first or second time in the year plus i had it that i did not properly eject the hard drive) or do i have to do it over and over again for data damage to happen. i'm concerned because i think a file got wiped (but then again, that file had a bunch of problems reading before the power shutoff today and likely wouldn't have played anyway). should i be concerned about any data damage to my computer or am i fine?

Moving on now to install Leopard (I tried Tiger too), when I get to "Select Destination to install Mac OS X", my hard drive won't show up at all. When I go to disk utility or startup disk, it only shows the Leopard disc that's in the computer at the moment. Doesn't show Mac HD or the volume or anything whatesoever...
I feel like at this point only something can be done from the Terminal, Everything I found people could still at least click on their HD in the disk until...

I'm pretty sure that the hard drive on my pavillion is still ok, so what I've purchased a hard drive enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive as well as transfer my files to my new macbook. My question is whether I would be able to transfer my files from my PC hard drive to the macbook directly without formatting the hard drive because that will erase all my files.

1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.Â
2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.Â
3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.Â
4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.Â

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc. The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

My Seagate hard rive is saying that it is formatted NTFS when I plug it into my new mac. I have only ever used it on a mac and it didn't ever say this when i used it on my old computer.. Im not quite sure what to do because I have no where to put all my stuff to reformat it?

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?Â
