OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Disk Utility - Won't Repair Flash/Thumb Drive?

Mar 10, 2012

So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this:  "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means. The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing.

MacBook Pro :: Can Use Disk Utility Recovery To Clone Original Hdd To A New One

Apr 16, 2012

My original hdd refuses to boot up, and using disk utility via recovery mode to try and fix it just gives me an error "disk utility stopped repairing the drive, salvage data and format etc." giving an error about invalid node structure or something. Tried using target disk mode with a friend's mac when I was at work but the drive didn't even want to mount. Assuming it's about to die, I have just bought a new hdd (XT Hybrid) and since my mac is pre-Lion era (2010 model) I don't have a built in recovery mode, but strangely enough hooking up my old hdd with a dock and option-booting to it I can still access the recovery HD partition on it.

So I was thinking if i can essentially "clone" my original hdd to the new one using the restore tab on disk utility, and try using disk repair on it to get it working? or is there another app I can use that will do this (being mindful that I don't have access to another mac or the OS on the HDD to run it, so it'll have to be "live", and preferably free) Or should I just cut my losses and just put a fresh install on it... Yes I do have a time machine backup, but there's two reasons I want to see if this works - one is that although time machine is quite up to date (within a week I'm guessing, can't remember), it's obviously won't have the new content created during the day(s) before I was able to plug in my external hdd, and secondly since I don't have access to another mac to create a lion install usb drive, I'll have to use the internet recovery, and knowing my internet connection, 4gb download would take probably overnight and nearly a whole day to finish (assuming it doesn't drop out).

OS X Mavericks :: Create A Bootable Clone Using Disk Utility

Aug 22, 2014

Tried to create a bootable clone using Disk Utility & got this:“Restore Failure, Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps.”I may need to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner ($40) or Super Duper ($28).I had been using my free CCC v. 3.4.7 to make clones of OS X 10.6.8 but now I upgraded to OS X 10.9.4 & got message that CCC not compatible with Mavericks unless I buy the CCC v. 3.5.6.I read several places that DU can do back up clones same as CCC or SD!I launched DU from recovery system, selected Mac HD as source & my XHD as destination. Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong? Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

Mac Pro :: Will Read Thumb Drive But Not CF Card Reader

Feb 19, 2012

I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5 (using Leopard).I had no problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, butwhen I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port. I figured the problem was a bad card reader.

I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos. Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed.I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera. Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?

MacBook Pro :: Disk Utility Recovery Of Files After Deleting From External Hard Drive?

Jun 10, 2012

I had downloaded some files to add to an external hard drive, the hard drive was assigned to a pc before adding these files so it wouldn't let me add files from my MacBook..

Had a look around online and made some changes (well thats what I thought) and I was able to transfer files form my MacBook onto the external hard drive.

What I then figured out was that there was nothing left on the hard drive except for the two file sI just transferred..

It turns out I deleted everyting without noticing.

The stpes I followed was to go to disk utility then select the hard drive and click erase (not knowing this would erase evrything).

So now I have two files on my hard drive and no idea how to recover the 'delted' files.

I tried using Disk Drill, which found the files but then it said I need to buy the full version to recover them.

I am wondering if there is any free methods to recover these files at all

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Find Hard Drive

May 7, 2012

I had to power off my iMac by Pressing the power key and holding it several times over the last few weeks. The last time it wouldn't reboot - I'd just get an apple icon. When I tried a safe boot I'd get the icon and it would change to a no entry sign.Next I started up from the snow leopard installation disk with the intent of repairing the iMac disk. The installation disk worked but when I opened disk utility it only found the installation disk. It didn't find the iMac disk.

IMac (Intel) :: Disk Utility Can't Format USB Drive

Aug 22, 2014

I've got a Transcend 8GB usb drive and i want to erase everything on it but i can't. I know that the best way to do this is the Disk Utility (Because Finder can't erase them too. When I drag and drop to the bin, it says "43 files cannot be deleted")

When i attempt to format, this message appears from disk utility: and also, another message appears at the same time.I just wanted to format my disk. But i can still see the content in the disk. But can't copy them to desktop.

OS X :: Thumb Drive - Files Deleted But Available Space Same

Jan 9, 2009

I have 2 thumb drives. I believe one if formatted Fat32 and the other specifically for the mac. When I delete files from them the available space does not increase, the only way to get the memory back is to format them. If I check the info it still shows space used after I delete every file, and not a little used space it shows the amount of space before I delete anything. How to fix this without reformatting whenever I need more space?

MacBook Pro :: SD Card Not Mounting Or Seen In Disk Utility

Aug 23, 2010

I have a mid-2009 13" MBP (2.26, 4 gigs, 1TB HDD, SL 10.6.4) and the SD card reader is not recognizing any of my SD cards (won't mount and also not seen in Disk Utility). The cards are recognized when using a USB adaptor, and also work fine in my wife's MBP SD card reader, so I know it's not the cards. System Profiler recognizes the internal card reader on my system.

I've tried resetting the SMC and reformatting the cards but nothing has worked so far.

EDIT: The SD card reader isn't working under OSX or in Windows, btw.

OS X :: Deleting Files From Memory Stick (Thumb Drive)

Sep 12, 2009

I am still "new" to the Mac world and I have a question about memory sticks/thumb drives and deleting info. I deleted some stuff from a thumb drive and it shows up in the trash can, but when I eject the thumb drive the trash can is empty of the stuff I deleted from the thumb drive. So I figured nothing to delete from the trash can.

So today when I plugged in the thumb drive the stuff that I deleted shows back up in the trash can. So for fun I ejected the thumb drive and the trash was empty. Is this normal? I am now deleting the stuff in the trash can with the thumb drive attached and I can see it "in use" light flashing on the thumb drive.

OS X :: Option To Clone Install Disk, Don't Need To Clone?

Aug 30, 2010

I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

Other SD cards don't show up neither. There was no pbm accessing the data using an old Windows PC.A user friendly Sofware Function Test of the Internal Card Reader could give a quick answer where to look for error.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk (1 Partition) On External Hard Drive

Apr 24, 2012

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!

Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'.  And it needs to be reformatted.  It's become a read only disk.  When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question.  I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969!  These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.

I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure.  Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive?  And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Jun 27, 2014

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:

Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Cannot Repair Disk

Apr 1, 2012

I'm experiencing some problems with my iMac right now, and I'm not sure how they started or what to do to correct them.

1) Computer seems to hang up from time to time while starting applications, or in the middle of some tasks. There's no rhyme or reason or any patterns.

Question: Is there anything I should try to clean up the computer?

2) About a week ago I started using Time Machine to do scheduled backups rather than me manually starting my own backups. Now whenever time machine does a back up, it seems to stop working somewhere in the "Preparing to Backup" stage, and I end up needing to restart the computer manually because the whole system becomes useless. It will no longer complete any backups, even when I start manually.

Question: Why would time machine now all of the sudden start freezing in the middle of the prep to backup stage?

3) I just tried to use my disk utility to check and see if I need to repair the disk and here is what reported back:

OS X :: Clone All HDD Partitions - Finding Utility

Aug 23, 2010

I am contemplating an upgrade from my 5400 RPM 500GB HDD to a 7200RPM 500GB Seagate Momentus XT.

The problem is I have a 400GB Mac OS X partition along with a 100GB Windows 7 partition.

SuperDuper and CCC seem to only support AFS+ partitions so I can move over Mac OS X easily, but neither can copy both partitions.

Is there some kind of boot utility that will clone the hard drive pretty much exactly? I'd prefer to not have to reinstall W7 on the new drive as I have an upgrade copy and it is a pain to get a clean install activated.

Mac Pro :: Drive Cannot Be Seen In Disk Utility?

Jun 17, 2009

I was working in windows using mac drive last night and I opened a dmg which I found out later was corrupted. It didn't open in windows, and windows hung to the point that I had to do a hard restart. Once everything booted back up (it took forever, btw), I found that one of my HFS drives (not the one I was working on at the time, oddly enough) had disappeared from both windows and osx. I cannot see the actual drive in device manager or disk utility, and things like diskwarrior and data recovery 2 don't see it either. I know it sounds like the hard drive failed, but is it possible that a software crash could cause the physical drive to completely fail?
