Sometimes, the display randomly blanks and the monitor reports no signal. This occurs continuosly for a few minutes and then the display goes back to normal. Sometimes I have to plug in/plug out the monitor to make it recover. /var/log/system.log shows no logs while these blinks occur.Â

my screen is just randomly going dark. its not shuting down - just seems to go to sleep but nothing I do wakes it short of turning the power button off then on. When I do that it quickly comes on again and seems to work fine. Seems to be happening with more and more frequency and is not particular to any software. I've read the boards here - I'm not a gamer ( no games on this computer) I'm a photographer with lots of files and I use photoshop alot. Yesterday I was on you tube and my screen went dark again but the video was still playing - I could still hear it. In fact, I could hit my mouse to stop and start the video but I couldn't see anything. my screen keeps going black randomly but everything in the background is still playing. When i press the power button twice it will go to standby and then turns on again, but the black screen keeps getting more and more frequent. Ive tried resetting the SMC and the command+option + PR thing but nothing has worked.

I have a 27" iMac. Just recently, the screen has begun to randomly shut off. I then have to squeeze the power button, followed by a click of the mouse. This will bring me back to my password screen. Sometimes, that would be it, other times, it will do it repeatedly, for no reason, and then settle down.Â
Just for those of you who are bound to ask me about my Energy saving settings: Computer to sleep – Never. Display to sleep – 15 min.Â
It seems to me that this could be a hardware issue, but just incase any of you have had any experience of something similar, I thought I would ask.Â

So frustrated with this situation. It appears this is only happening since upgrading to Lion so that's why I've chose to post it in this forum. My screen has been shutting off randomly. And I've only been able to get it to happen when I use gestures on the trackpad. (I.E.: "App Expose, "Show desktop" or "Show all windows.) I say my screen because the HD is still spinning, the keyboard backlights are still on and the status light is still lit. I can't do anything but hard shutdown. I've tried adjusting the brightness, clicking, keyboard commands (force quit) and nothing does anything. I've been sending the crash report to Apple but I feel like that is pointless so I'm turning to the forum for a possible answer. I've inluded my specs below as well as a copy of the log that got sent to apple (in blue). I don't know if it will say anything to anyone but it's worth a shot. I don't think it's a screen cable issue cause I'm not moving or adjusting the screen when this is happening.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor some odd reason, my pro which is only about a month old keeps blacking out. I already checked on the automated sleep and it is not that. The screen will just randomly turn black even when in use. I tried pressing buttons, esc, spacebar, and even turning it off. It also has issues turning off. When I finally get it to turn off and try to restart it, it lights up but then the CD drive makes a noise like theres a disc in it even though there is not. I tried ejecting it even though there is nothing in there and the screen goes black.

Every 8 or 9 minutes my mac seems to move me from whatever I am doing and takes me to the home screen. How can I stop this from happening?
I'm using an iMac (late 2011) with 10.7.3. I'm doing things on the computer or some process is going on when the screen instantly goes black (no dimming first). If a video was playing, I can still hear it playing, but pushing keys on the keyboard or mouse or pad does nothing to wake the screen. Sometimes pushing the power button a number of times will get the screen to come on, sometimes it won't. When the screen goes black, if an external drive was running and then stops, I can sometimes get the screen to come to live. Sometimes this black screen happens when I'm burning a DVD; when the DVD is finished, I can bring the screen to life. I thought one of my two external drives was bad, so I disconnected it. That seemed to help (though verifying the disk revealed no problems). But a few minutes ago, the screen instantly went black again; no dimming first. There have been times I thought this was associated with a new bit of software, but then it returns even after I delete the suspect software. Sometimes I have to use the power button to shut down the iMac then restart it. Once, I had to unplug and replug the iMac before I could get the computer to respond and the screen to return to life. I don't know if this is a hardware problem (internal or external), a software problem, or some combination...or something I haven't thought of, at all.

As a complete aside, is there a keyboard shortcut for being on google chrome or safari, then immediately opening the window for "preview." I'm typing notes out on preview while listening to a video lecture on my web browser, usually chrome, and i'd like to switch back and forth.Â

lately, my mba has been behaving a little weirdly. its screen would suddenly become a little dimmer when the brightness in the room has not changed a bit. after a long while(15 min?), it'll turn brighter again by itself, and again without any change in the lighting of the room. the change is not big but obviously. any idea? can it be some software? or setting? or a defective light sensor?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAt least, it seemingly randomly turns off. I can be surfing the web or whatever like normal, but then after a period of time the monitor goes black. I can see that the computer hasn't shut off, but it's as though the computer is on its lowest brightness setting. It can be temporarily fixed some times if I lower the brightness all the way via F1, then put it back up, but if it goes up more than 3 or 4 boxes it goes black again.
It also goes black if I were to move the monitor any time during this whole thing. I've heard things like an inverter cable and board, but I have no idea what's going to fix this. This is my only computer, I use it for all my school work, if it breaks permanently I'm screwed.
My MBP has all the sudden started to throw a black screen at me. i have to restart my MBP every time this happens. I have tried doing a fresh install and starting fresh and this doesn't help, I've even installed every app one at a time and tried to figure it out.

My MacBook is from 2007, so it is old and has its problems. When I turned it on one day, it was all normal, and randomly the screen got so dark, it looked like the computer had shut down on me. I knew it was still turned on though because the little light was indicating that it was on and it was still making the cd drive/booting up sounds.Â
After a while, I noticed that the screen just went very very dim, because I could still slightly see the webpage I was on. Turning up the brightness of the screen did nothing, same with restarting the computer.
Sometimes the screen would come back to the normal brightness, until I would go to do something on the internet and it would go very dark again. It's so unpredictable, I don't even want to deal with it anymore.Â
My new macbook aluminum's screen has a tendency to gradually dim and then brighten on it's own, randomly. This is off the battery power and not AC adapter. Anyone else's macbook screen do this? This is not the screen dimming to sleep. it is constantly dimming and brightening, even as I type this post.

I am running my macbook pro, plugged into the AC / Mains, with another monitor connected, when the macbookpro screen goes black the dual monitor stays up and running, I can even do the mirror screen from the actual macbook pro and run it on the dual monitor and its running perfectly (I hope this makes sense!).
Its really odd and only started in the last few days.. it lasts about 30seconds at a time and is starting to worry me!
It started almost 3 days ago. My 2008 macbook screen would suddenly turn black. When watching a YouTube video, the sound still plays but the screen is black. I tried adjusting the brightness, didnt work. I tried pressing the power button but nothing changed. Then when i closed my screen and opened it, the display would return with the (turnoff, sleep etc) question meaning my button computed something.

1. Screen Brightness is on. Desktop functioning as normal, according to the brightness set.
2. Randomly, the entire screen brightness will switch 'off' - but not go to sleep - it is set at the brightness level, as if you would have turned it all the way down manually. Automatically, my screen goes from:
3. After clicking the brightness button on the screen - when I look closely - the brightness control is set at its previous level, but the screen is not at that brightness! darkest screen (above, right) + brightness settings up   Â
4. In order to solve the issue, I have to hold down the minimize brightness button and then turn it back up, from the lowest setting. This only works about one in five times. All other times, the screen briefly flashes and then goes dark again.    Â

I've been experiencing a problem with my 2007 MacBook Pro. At seemingly random intervals the computer freezes, the screen goes blue, and restarts at the login screen. It does NOT fully restart the computer, which is why I'm having difficulty finding a solution to this problem since most info online seems to deal with that issue. Â
I took it to the Genius Bar -- they reset the cache and system permissions -- but the problem remains unsolved. There's no new hardware of software I can think of..MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz running Mac OSX 10.6.8. Please let me know if I can provide more info. Â
