OS X V10.7 Lion :: MacBook Pro Screen Blacking Out Randomly Even When In Use
Apr 28, 2012
For some odd reason, my pro which is only about a month old keeps blacking out. I already checked on the automated sleep and it is not that. The screen will just randomly turn black even when in use. I tried pressing buttons, esc, spacebar, and even turning it off. It also has issues turning off. When I finally get it to turn off and try to restart it, it lights up but then the CD drive makes a noise like theres a disc in it even though there is not. I tried ejecting it even though there is nothing in there and the screen goes black.

Macbook pro running lion 10.7.5.
Every 8 or 9 minutes my mac seems to move me from whatever I am doing and takes me to the home screen. How can I stop this from happening?

So frustrated with this situation. It appears this is only happening since upgrading to Lion so that's why I've chose to post it in this forum. My screen has been shutting off randomly. And I've only been able to get it to happen when I use gestures on the trackpad. (I.E.: "App Expose, "Show desktop" or "Show all windows.) I say my screen because the HD is still spinning, the keyboard backlights are still on and the status light is still lit. I can't do anything but hard shutdown. I've tried adjusting the brightness, clicking, keyboard commands (force quit) and nothing does anything. I've been sending the crash report to Apple but I feel like that is pointless so I'm turning to the forum for a possible answer. I've inluded my specs below as well as a copy of the log that got sent to apple (in blue). I don't know if it will say anything to anyone but it's worth a shot. I don't think it's a screen cable issue cause I'm not moving or adjusting the screen when this is happening.

lately, my mba has been behaving a little weirdly. its screen would suddenly become a little dimmer when the brightness in the room has not changed a bit. after a long while(15 min?), it'll turn brighter again by itself, and again without any change in the lighting of the room. the change is not big but obviously. any idea? can it be some software? or setting? or a defective light sensor?

For the past... week my powerbook g4 has been: not charging well, and not lasting battery wise as it has been (ive checked all my energy saving settings and cleared off all unused items!); its also been blacking out when the battery reaches around 30 mins left to go. it doesnt always do this just sometimes... without warning?? After the second time today of blacking out ive now realised i have no sound? I am a fairly new mac user (6 months) so please talk in friendly easy to understand mac terms!

I've upgraded to iLife 09 and ran into a problem with some jpg pictures that all came from the same source.
When I double-click on certain photos (all landscape view) to enlarge them, they expand out, and then go black. If I click on the "Name" button it recognizes faces behind the black but I can't see anything.
I've rebuilt the library and repaired permissions. It doesn't help to reimport the pictures or to rotate them around.

My iMac 20" G5 (PPC, working with Tiger 10.4.11), bought in April 2006, has the following illness:
When I work locally, it functions fine. When I go into Internet, it starts purring and whining.
When I watch a video on YouTube, for example, the purring and whining increases and finally the screen blacks out. With a mouse click, the screen comes back but goes out again immediately.
After shutting down the system and giving it some rest, everything starts working again normally, but only until I go online.
I have tried to use Disk Utility, but the install disk that came with my Mac gets ejected.

At least, it seemingly randomly turns off. I can be surfing the web or whatever like normal, but then after a period of time the monitor goes black. I can see that the computer hasn't shut off, but it's as though the computer is on its lowest brightness setting. It can be temporarily fixed some times if I lower the brightness all the way via F1, then put it back up, but if it goes up more than 3 or 4 boxes it goes black again.
It also goes black if I were to move the monitor any time during this whole thing. I've heard things like an inverter cable and board, but I have no idea what's going to fix this. This is my only computer, I use it for all my school work, if it breaks permanently I'm screwed.

My MBP has all the sudden started to throw a black screen at me. i have to restart my MBP every time this happens. I have tried doing a fresh install and starting fresh and this doesn't help, I've even installed every app one at a time and tried to figure it out.

My MacBook is from 2007, so it is old and has its problems. When I turned it on one day, it was all normal, and randomly the screen got so dark, it looked like the computer had shut down on me. I knew it was still turned on though because the little light was indicating that it was on and it was still making the cd drive/booting up sounds.
After a while, I noticed that the screen just went very very dim, because I could still slightly see the webpage I was on. Turning up the brightness of the screen did nothing, same with restarting the computer.
Sometimes the screen would come back to the normal brightness, until I would go to do something on the internet and it would go very dark again. It's so unpredictable, I don't even want to deal with it anymore.

My new macbook aluminum's screen has a tendency to gradually dim and then brighten on it's own, randomly. This is off the battery power and not AC adapter. Anyone else's macbook screen do this? This is not the screen dimming to sleep. it is constantly dimming and brightening, even as I type this post.

My Macbook pro running Tiger 10.4.11 is now starting to randomly, what seems like shut the screen down, and just go to a black screen.
I am running my macbook pro, plugged into the AC / Mains, with another monitor connected, when the macbookpro screen goes black the dual monitor stays up and running, I can even do the mirror screen from the actual macbook pro and run it on the dual monitor and its running perfectly (I hope this makes sense!).
Its really odd and only started in the last few days.. it lasts about 30seconds at a time and is starting to worry me!

It started almost 3 days ago. My 2008 macbook screen would suddenly turn black. When watching a YouTube video, the sound still plays but the screen is black. I tried adjusting the brightness, didnt work. I tried pressing the power button but nothing changed. Then when i closed my screen and opened it, the display would return with the (turnoff, sleep etc) question meaning my button computed something.

1. Screen Brightness is on. Desktop functioning as normal, according to the brightness set.
2. Randomly, the entire screen brightness will switch 'off' - but not go to sleep - it is set at the brightness level, as if you would have turned it all the way down manually. Automatically, my screen goes from:
3. After clicking the brightness button on the screen - when I look closely - the brightness control is set at its previous level, but the screen is not at that brightness! darkest screen (above, right) + brightness settings up
4. In order to solve the issue, I have to hold down the minimize brightness button and then turn it back up, from the lowest setting. This only works about one in five times. All other times, the screen briefly flashes and then goes dark again.

I've been experiencing a problem with my 2007 MacBook Pro. At seemingly random intervals the computer freezes, the screen goes blue, and restarts at the login screen. It does NOT fully restart the computer, which is why I'm having difficulty finding a solution to this problem since most info online seems to deal with that issue.
I took it to the Genius Bar -- they reset the cache and system permissions -- but the problem remains unsolved. There's no new hardware of software I can think of..MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz running Mac OSX 10.6.8. Please let me know if I can provide more info.

I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.16 dual core with a mate screen and now all of the sudden I get this weird pattern. Sometimes it goes and comes back and sometimes it disappears for a month. Is my screen up for a change or is it just something loose.

screen goes black, laptop seems to have not turned off but nothing can turn the screen on. seems fine after a reboot but problem recurs at some random future inconvenient point in time. problem is annoyingly inconsistent - it will occur at random (no discoverable software or hardware conjunctions), sometimes around once weekly, sometimes less frequently. have already had it in a mac repair, said they fixed it, something to do with graphics card firmware.

I got a new Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2014) a few weeks ago and the trackpad and screen randomly freeze even when the only thing I have open is Safari. In other words, it doesn't feel like my computer has a 2.6 GHz Processor and 8 GB 1600 Mhz Memory. My downloads folder also constantly has the loading bar under it; it goes away when I remove it from the dock and replace it, but appears again after downloading one thing.
This is really frustrating when I got a new Macbook so that I wouldn't have to deal with these types of problems. They're all issues that I never encountered with my Macbook Air (mid-2011).

In the past month, my Macbook pro, which I have had since May 2009, has started to act very strange.
Sometimes when I watch videos online (collegehumor, youtube, etc.), or am just working on my laptop, the screen stops working. It goes mostly black, and a bunch of weird lines appear on the screen.
The system hasn't crashed or froze, since I can still see my mouse because one little line follows its movement, and the audio still works, and I can still Command + Q and exit out of programs.
I think the problem may have been that I slipped on the stairs one day holding my Macbook Pro and may have damaged the screen somehow, but I just want to know if this has happened to somebody else with their MBP, and what caused it?

Anyone else noticing their new macbook air freezing randomly and the screen just turns completely black? The back light is still on but nothing is on the screen.
None of the buttons work, can't force quit anything, i have to hold power button to turn it off then back on.
It has happened to me twice already, first time when i was installing the adobe suite, second time is when I was working on a school assignment with a simulation app (not cpu or memory intensive AT ALL).

So I love my 1 1/2 month old 13inch MBP.
The thing is that recently at random times throughout my day when I'm, using my Mac...my finger will be on the glass trackpad and i'll be doing something like say surfing the web or using w/e application...Well, randomly the mouse on the screen will disappear from its current location, say for example on Firefox's toolbar, immediately to the bottom of the screen. It's never the top of the screen, or the sides since it normally just causes the dock to rise up...
I'm really concerned to see what's going on here. I rarely had this problem with my old Whitebook, though admittedely did happen a few times.
Perhaps a water spill/damage? Though consider to have been very careful with my new Mac. I'm sure the glass trackpad on these new Macbook Pro's has water damage sensors right? Anyway I can see it/observe it myself.
I used to love taking apart my old whitebook but these new MBP's seem impossible; that or i'm just too scared since I do love how the machine was built.

I have a ibook G4 that's been randomly shutting down. It started doing this maybe about a month ago but it's started getting really bad lately. At first it would shut down if I unplugged the adapter. Not every time I unplugged it, but probably about 50% of the time. When I press the battery button all of the green lights would light up. About half of the time it will start up again if I just hit the power button but the half of the time I have to reset the pRAM. Lately this same thing has been happening except when the computer is still plugged in. And when in say shutting down I mean essentially instantaneously. One second it's on and then the screen goes black and it makes that turning off noise. Not a chime, but like all the fans and hardware are coming to a stop.

My mid 2013 MBP, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16Gb 1600 Mhz DDR with a 500 GB SSD running Mavericks 10.9.3 has, since upgrade to Mavericks, developed a tick. It will occasionally and erratically (some days nothing, sometimes once a day, sometimes twice or more) go black with cursor arrow visible and responsive. (Responsive=it's visible and moves as expected in response to trackpad) The screen comes back after 30-40 seconds or so, but not in response to any keypress or mouse movement that I can detect a pattern for. It just sits there, while I hit escape, spacebar, shift, cmd-option-esc, cmd-option-tab, mouse around, whatever, then comes back. System is fine, don't even get the beach ball. So it's a minor annoyance, except when I'm presenting to a roomful of people who are waiting for my machine to wake up, and that 30 seconds can be FOREVER. Which has happened twice now. When I'm connected to an external screen via thunderbolt that screen is black as well.
tried the fix of resetting SMC as well as Safe Mode boot to complete any unfinished OS updates. But the symptom is different, and those fixes haven't worked. I've never had a bad reboot, this condition just seems to pop up without apparent rhyme or reason. It's so infrequent and unpredictable that I despair how long it will take me to run bare and cycle through restoring background apps.

My macbook air has randomly developed an issue with its display. Occasionally, when t's already running, a grayish/white line runs vertically towards the middle of the screen. It's about an inch thick. The computer will still run as normal, you just can't see the part of the screen being covered by the line. When I restart my mac line goes away. It randomly comes back again and the process starts all over.
