Jan 4, 2010I've suddenly been getting a pop up message that reads "Your startup disk is almost full - you need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files"
My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?

Jul 13, 2009I was using my Macbook awhile ago and I got a popup message saying my startup disk is full, even though I have 84.05 gigs available. I figured it was a fluke and ignored it. A bit later, I was doing some stuff in Finder and noticed at the bottom where it says my drive's free space, it suddenly went from 84.05 GB free, to zero free, gave me the error message, and went back up to 84.05 gigs free, and it's done this a couple times...and the only thing I was doing was copying a 3 KB text file from a thumb drive. Anyone know WTF is up with that? It definitely is strange and I've never seen it before. I just ran a Verify in Disk Utility and everything checks out, no errors

May 27, 2012My wife has an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook with Leopard 10.5.8. We've run the software update. We've run repair disk permissions. We've restarted the computer. But despite all of that, her virtual memory usage is really high compared to my computer. Each process is using from approximately 600 - 1100 MB of virtual memory. She has 12 GB of free space on her hard drive, but her computer has been running slower lately and has had the low startup disk space warning.

Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. May 24, 2012I didn't just lose my harddrive. My 2007 iMac with Leopard froze up yesterday and it looks like I need a new hard-drive.But I thought I'd try to follow the support info to reboot it with the startup disk so that I could try to backup the files.I inserted the disk, pressed C on startup, and worked my way to disk utilities.I clicked on the Macintosh HD on the left side and clicked "repair disk." and after a couple minutes I got an error message saying that the repair failed.Ok, so then I stopped, but then noticed that the "Macintosh HD" on the left side is now in grey color print. And when I click on it, it looks like there is 0 bytes on it.Did I just lose my entire hard-drive?? Please tell me that there is some hope. I was having problems with backing up my info onto my WD Mybook through TimeMachine, so it's been over a year since that was last done. I am merely trying to retrieve files from the last year from my hard-drive before I have a new one installed. I'm dropping off the computer in the morning with an Apple 3rd party consultant to try and retrieve what he can from my hard-drive. I just want to know if I just made things worse.

Jun 17, 2012Ive made an OS bootable super duper backup of my white intel imac (late 2006) 10.6.8 onto a WD My Book Studio 2TB (GUID partioned) and although the drive appears to be running fine from the OS its not being seen as a startup drive when connected via usb or firewire (with an 800 to 400 adapter) after holding down the option key at startup. I tested the startup drive capability on a newer imac running 10.7.4 and it shows up as a viable startup drive when holding option at boot up and plugged in via firewire.
why the older imac might not be picking up the drive at bootup with option key pressed?

Mar 10, 2012I ran omnidisk sweeper and it shows I only have 39GB of used space. However, when I check the info on the startup disk it shows that I only have 300mb-5GB left depending on the day. I have deleted all unnecessary files that I can. I can't really find anything else to delete. I only have a couple programs installed that are pretty basic like word and excel.

But I have been advised to upgrade the os first as I am still on snow leopard. Before I buy lion (I can't wait for mountain lion) can I upgrade while the start up disk is full? Or will it not let me (it won't do the updates that are coming through at the moment)? If I save iphoto and itunes to the external drive first will I still be able to access them/ properly?
