I just bought a new 15" MBP 3 days ago and got an Airport Extreme to replace my Linksys router. I have 3 Hard drives connected to it and I have no problems accessing the files when I am at home on my personal network but what if I am at school or work and I need those files. Is there some way for me to get to them remotely?

Now I am trying to use that Home Disk for my new iMac, either as disk for Time Machine or for manual back up.But it does not work. I would like to remote access my mac from home wherever I go. I don't want to do SSH or register at any website, I know it's better but all I'm looking for is to just be able to remote access my mac via screen share so here's what I've done so far.
I've opened the ports on the airport extreme base station (5900 etc.) and set the private ip address for the mac under port mapping.
I've set the private ip statically on my mac at home through system preferences
I've turned on screen share on my mac at home
I've recorded the public ip address for me to have for remotely logging in remotely
I've done all of these steps and I still can't remotely login to my mac at home. Now, the only thing I forgot to do is set the password under the screen sharing settings under sharing. Is that the only thing I need to do to be able to achieve successful remote access? Is there anything else I need to do besides creating a password for VNC and the step I've described above?
I am moving to a new job that will be about 30 minutes away from home, and I'd like to be able to access my home Mac Pro. I should have fairly decent internet at the new home and new job, so I'd like to set up some sort of VPN or remote access.
Would having DynDNS and then VNC acccess be the best way to do this? What about setting up a VPN so I can access files from a work machine?
I have a non-fixed IP with BT for my home network and am curious if I can set things up to access my home machines and volumes when I am abroad. A step-by-step guide to this process would, no doubt, be useful to a number of MR members. If there is a kind soul who could post an idiot-proof set of instructions that would be great, and would perhaps be put up as a user guide here at MR.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm getting conflicting info about this. Those who seem knowledgeable say you need a MAC at home to use BTMM with the new Airport but there are reports of people that are connecting to TC or USB disks over the internet without a MAC at home.
And to make matters worse it's confusing to begin with. Also, there doesn't seem to be much interest in this issue.

"Nope. I just finally got mine to work without any home computer connected to the shared disks on my AEBS. I didn't change anything from 5 minutes ago when it didn't work, but it does now. "
Here are all the steps I took:
1. Added MobileMe info on the Advanced screen
2. Checked the box to share disks over the Internet
3. Checked the box to share the disks using Bonjour
4. Added a wide-area Bonjour hostname
Hopefully this was just something they turned on rather than a grim promise of spotty service.

"I did not even have to do (2) (3) and (4).
But I think the service is rather slow right now. So you might not see your AirDisk appearing on the Finder immediately.
Also AirPort Utility will take advantage of wide-area bonjour and MobileMe service as well, by login onto MobileMe, you can remotely configure your TC."

It will just sit there for like 3-4 minutes and then tell me something about it not being found. I attached a picture of the message I get. What should I do?

I'm also curious if anyone has used GarageBand on the MBA and if it runs smoothly. I'm considering the 4 GB MBA primarily for this purpose.
I have the current model 15" MBP. I'm just wondering if there is a specific remote you need since they don't come with remotes any more I didn't know if Apple changed it or if they were only being cheap (which we know they are!). I need to use it for some Keynote presentations and I saw these on eBay and figured it wouldn't hurt to save $10 if they worked with my machine.

if anyone has written anything to make it work with other Macs yet? Anyone figure out what restricts it from working with other machines? I would love to replace the beast of an external drive I have with this beautiful piece of work. I don't use the external a lot but enough I want one around. At the same time anyone figure out how to make the GUI interface of remote disk work with other machines? I know there is way to remote disk anything and have done it before but the GUI they added to this service is beatiful for the MBA. I would love to be able to use either of these things with out the MBA.

I run a UMBP @ home and also have a work laptop connected to my LAN. I want to remote into my work laptop from my UMBP, but I am having trouble doing so. My work laptop has joint to the company domain and has Group Policy applied. However I made sure all the remote desktop firewall rules are open and I still can't remote into it. Work laptop is running Win7. My dad's pc is also a Win7 and I can remote into just fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, my macbook's wireless internet doesn't work at home. It takes hours to load a simple page if it doesn't time out. The wireless works everywhere but at my house which is frustrating when taking it to apple. Other apple products and computers connect to the home wireless perfectly but not this laptop. Apple suggested a reformat, but it did not help.

I have brought my work mac book pro home with me to do some work over the weekend, but I have the issue of usually it's connected to a network in work and now that I've got it home it says "Network Accounts Unavailable". When I try to log in the log in wheel just spins for about a minute then shakes as if it's the wrong password. I know I'm using the right password as I used it little over an hour ago in work. Do I have to be connected to the internet? And if so is there a work around so I can connect to the Wifi without logging in? It's not the administrator account on the mac, and I don't have those details, but it's a real pain not to have it over the weekend.

I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? View 4 Replies View RelatedI created an SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4, and when I tested it on a standard TV DVD player, the remote controls work just as they should. But, when I play it on a Mac computer using a remote, it doesn't work the same. For example, if I have a video track following a slideshow, when I'm on the last slide I can press PLAY and the video will play. But on a Mac, pressing PLAY is taking me back to the Menu page.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to connect to a small (10) local network of imacs all running Mavericks 10.9.3. I'm using Remote Desktop over Bonjour and also trying to share an iTunes library using Home sharing. None of the computers will respond. I get an error (-3170) on the target computers for the home sharing and RD tells me they're all sleeping when I can see perfectly well that they are awake and logged in. They all have RD client 3.7.1 installed but the response I get from RD when I try to wake them is 'this is not supported on these computers'.Â
This system worked wonderfully well under 10.6.8 and now it's completely screwed with Mavericks. as all the computers respond readily via the 'Go/connect to server/browse/connect method'. They are obviously all connected it's just this new OS just doesn't work.

I've been thinking of using an iMac as a video player in my workout room. I'd like it to be able to grab videos (tv shows) from my main iMac. I'd also use it to play dvd's.
I was thinking of buying a used G4 iMac to do this, but would like to be able to use a remote control to use Front Row.
First, can I use Front Row on iMac #2 to get videos from iMac #1?
Secondly, does the Apple Remote Controller work with a ppc G4 iMac?
When i'm about and about during my day it is very tough to get WiFi, or at least to connect to it and get online.
@ my friends house I can't go online, even though i have this password and says connected. I've tried using diagnostics but in the end am not connected. @ another friends house the same situation. @ Starbucks and McDonalds it won't connect as well....but at home it always connects.
how can i connect to my mac at work from my mac at home? Is it possible to turn the "work" mac on and off And is it simple to set this up. After i do set up the VNC is it easy to connect whenever i have to?

For example. Does Home Sharing only work with one account? What if I have an iTunes account and my Wife has an account, does one of us lose all of our content when we share? You are supposed to be able to transfer content among all local shares. What happens next? Do I need to authorize each file to work on another computer/iPhone/Touch? I have not gone all the way with setting up Home Sharing as I don't want to go down a long path and be stuck at the end.

On my iPad2, I have a home email account and a work email account and work calendar. If I set up a second (work) user account on the family iMac, can I have two iCloud accounts to keep work and home separate? I would like to share pictures, home emails, etc with my wife's iPad and iPhone, but not share the work email and work calendar. Will I be able to have both iCloud accounts share with my iPhone 4s and iPad? For now, I am using a google calendar for work on the iPad2 and sync it to Google.

I have 4 Mac's in my household, 2 MBP's, a Mac Pro ,and a Mac Mini. I can find the Mac Pro and both MBP's on Back to my Mac but the problem is with the Mac Mini.I am able to see any of the computers from the Mac Mini but the Mac Mini won't show up on any of the computers. This would be the case using Back to My Mac and won't even work on the Finder within the home network. The Mac Mini simply won't show up in the Finder.
I have Leopard on the system with the latest updates and have gone through the settings and can't find anything that is turned off.
