I have a non-fixed IP with BT for my home network and am curious if I can set things up to access my home machines and volumes when I am abroad. A step-by-step guide to this process would, no doubt, be useful to a number of MR members. If there is a kind soul who could post an idiot-proof set of instructions that would be great, and would perhaps be put up as a user guide here at MR.
View 5 RepliesI am going to move into a new house soon. I am looking to network the house, so I can use the internet anywhere, share movies,etc. This is my current setup at my apartment.
1 x Mac Mini connected to my TV in the lounge
1 x Apple TV connected to the TV in the bedroom
1 x Main PC in the study room (which all my movies/tv series/music/etc... is stored)
2 x Laptops
1 x Apple 20" Cinema Display
The mac mini is connected via ethernet to the router & the apple tv is connected via WiFi. Its currently a small place so the apple tv can access the router's wireless signal. This is what I have in mind for our new house which kinda big in size. Trash the PC and buy a mac mini server and external NAS storage. The NAS storage will store all the movies/tv series/mp3's/etc. I currently have a ubiquity nanostation2 which I can setup to boost the wireless signal throughout the house so we can use wireless anywhere in the house & tv mac mini, laptops & apple tv can access the wireless (so i do not have to install ethernet cables throughout the house). Also in the future, I would want to install security cameras outside the house (still trying to find a good mac OS X security camera software). Before I buy the mac mini server & NAS, am i missing anything or is there another better solution?
i've recently got the Ethernet adapter for MBA and I am still unable to connect to my home internet connection... It continues to give me a "self-assigned IP".

I have 3 Hard drives connected to it and I have no problems accessing the files when I am at home on my personal network but what if I am at school or work and I need those files. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacPro Early 2009, 2 ethernet ports.Ethernet 1 is connected to the LAN and Ethernet 2 is connected directly to a SSL Matrix console (an audio mixer), whom driver needs the used ethernet port to be first of the list in the Network connections list in System Preferences.So when I browse internet I can't use the Matrix's software, and vice versa.I had to create 2 different network positions to browse internet and to work with SSL Matrix, one with Eth 1 first place, another one with Eth 2 first place, and I always have to swap positions.Is there a way to force OSX to use by default the 2nd connection of the list for internet access?Â

I'm trying to use Apple Remote Desktop to connect to multiple Mac's on a remote network. I've set the remote network's firewall/router to open up the ARD-specific ports for all the computers I want to connect to. I've also set each computer to accept Remote Management. On my ARD however, when I enter the network address of the remote network I'm trying to get to, I can only see ONE of the enabled computers, rather than all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAll day, I am able to use the internet (via WiFi connection) at the library. But when I get home, I can't connect to my home WiFi connection. This was never an issue before. I have done all of the obvious things (resetting my router, clearing saved connections from my computer and joining a 'new' network, check and installed all updates, etc etc), but nothing seems to work. All the other devices in our house are connected to the WiFi just fine.
I run the diagnostic and I'm only green on WiFi and WiFi settings, with network settings and ISP fluctuating between yellow and red, and internet and server is always red. I have tried DHCP Lease renewel (which usually does the trick when I am getting an invalid IP address (169.xxx.x.x) until I get a valid one (192.xxx.x.x). But now sometimes I'm not even getting an IP at all! All I wanna do is unwind, check/reply to emails just surf the web to decompress after my long days.

Had my MacBook Pro for a little a month now, and I love it. The problem I am faced with now is that I can't connect to my home network. My iMac is able to connect perfectly, but whenever I try to connect with my MBP, it won't connect, or will assign it's own IP and then states "You will not be able to connect to the internet." It's quiet annoying when I can't use my laptop to connect to the internet, what I am faced to do right now is take my iMac and bluetooth tether it to my MBP. This is fine if I'm in the same room, but it won't work when I'm upstairs. Does anyone know what's wrong? Should I contact my Apple store?

My MacBook, circa 2007, refuses to connect to my home WiFi network, despite having added my MAC address, being WPA encrypted, updated firmware and the like. I haven't had a problem in the last year, until I started taking my laptop to work. It connects to my work wifi network, WPA encryption, and every other network. I have no idea why it wont connect at home. I'm running snow leopard, other macs and PCs at home can connect... It seems I'm missing some odd quirk, I've seen a few threads of similar complaints, but no working resolution. Any ideas? I've wiped out Safari, cleaned all network settings, and it all started once my use shifted predominantly from home to work. Hmpf.

I have a macBook pro, running Yosemite, and cannot connect to 5GHz on my dual band bt home hub. Keeps saying 'invalid password' even though it is correct. I have given the 2GHz and 5GHz separate names and passwords and can now connect to 2GHz without dropping al the time, but am frustrated re 5GHZ. Even when stood next to the router it will not connect or recognise password.

When I'm at my apartment with 18 mbps internet my MacBook Pro has absolutly no problems with the internet. When I come to my parents house to stay where they have 15 mbps internet my laptop is rediculously slow. I thought it was the fact that more people are connected but on every other device it works fine, my iPad and my parents PC's have no problem. I am at a complete loss I have tried to run a diagnostic multiple times and have done the DNS Servers 4.2.2.1. and 4.2.2.2

(I had an open wifi account) Then, we got a new router and we wanted to put a password on it so that no one could use our wireless connection without us knowing.Â
Now my macbook will not connect to the wifi.. It just keeps telling me that the password is invalid. I have a TRENDnet router (TWE-632BRP) but my iphone connects to the wifi fine using the password.

I have a Netgear wireless router that is about 4 years old and has the latest firmware installed. Until now, I have had only Windows computers connected wirelessly and it has worked fine. We just got a new Macbook. When I try to connect to our network, it finds the network name but goes nowhere once I have entered the passphrase. Not being familiar with Macbooks I'm not sure what I'm missing. I did see somewhere that older versions of Airport required either a '$' preceeding the password or that the password should be enclosed with "". None of these things helped. What am I missing?
By the way, according to the Netgear docs, this router should work with Macs.
I really like my new MacBook Air, but one thing bothers the crap out of me which is that my airport doesn't automatically connect at home. I did nothing to my network out of the box and connect via WPA2 settings. My wife's late 2008 MacBook always connects to our home network (which is an Apple Extreme N router). Even my Dell Mini with OSX connects perfectly every time. What's causing the MacBook Air not to automatically connect and how do I fix it? BTW, I have tried turning off the Airport and turning back on. Also I used "assist me" to reconnect my DHCP settings and clicked to automatically connect me to my network. The only way I can connect is to click down on the wireless icon and actually choose the network.
View 19 Replies View RelatedYesterday I got my new iMac 21,5'. After starting it up, the airport would not work. The open network (not password protected) was detected, but every attempt to connect to it ended with a "timed out" error message. I tried to deactivate and reactivate the airport a few times. With no luck. Both my iphone and a cheap netbook would get a valid connection in the meantime. So it's not a network issue.
It's a d-link router and it's about half a meter from the imac. My previous macbook with tiger worked perfectly with this connection. I tried to change the wireless channel from 7 to 6 and this did not solve the issue. Or at least not right away. I tried again after say 15 minutes, and it worked. However, tried again in the morning, and got the "timed out" error message one more time. I have installed the airport software update
Firstly here is my configuration I need help with. My friends windows xp machine has a broadband connection in another part of the house. My iMac connects to this wirelessly via a WiFi dongle. I also have a windows xp machine networked to my iMac via a crossover cable. I would like to be able to have my xp box connect to the internet by perhaps accessing the wifi dongle on my Mac. I know I could just purchase another dongle and do it that way, easier but would defeat the purpose.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a PC in the upstairs office with cable/DSL router for Internet (through Comcast). This service also has a wireless connection. We have a Macbook laptop which connects effortlessly to our home network and we use it all over the house. We simply clicked the internet symbol on the top right (looks like a little amphitheater), selected out network, entered the password and have been connected ever since.
Today we brought home a new iMac and set it up in basement office. Tried the same routine. Clicked on the internet symbol, selected our network, noticed that the signal is just as strong as it is upstairs, typed in password but that's as far as we get.
I've gone the rounds with the Assist and the Utility features. I've shut the Airport on and off. I've tried setting up a new network. I do notice that the iMac has a "self-assigned" ISP "and cannot connect to the Internet." Does this mean I can't ever connect? Do we need to replace the self-assigned ISP with our Comcast IP address?
I've read here and there that our router might have Macs blocked and we could add this iMac as a secure system to get on the network. But we haven't played with the router's settings because we wouldn't know how. Besides, the Macbook connects fine.
Does this have anything to do with TimeMachine?
I recently did a clean install of leopard and then migrated my account back on to my MBP non-santa rosa 2.33. Now, when I attempt to internet share from my ethernet to computers using airport, they are able to see the network, connect to it, and put in the password, but internet fails to connect. I'm on a college network, but this shouldn't really matter since I currently have a network of this type working perfectly on an iMac running Tiger. The signal reads at full strength and behaves just like it should, just it doesn't allow an internet connection. No firewall is on.

I tried using a home network, but the samsung tv I have does not recognize most of the files, plus the internet apps suck big time.(only netflix is kind of good) So I was then thinking to get a mac mini and just but ay 1000$ it doe snot solve my needs. So I am looking for something to wireless stream the video from my imac to the tv. So it would mini dvi to hdmi - then box with HDMI input to stream to another box with HDMI output connected to my tv. It would also need to stream the audio. View 7 Replies View RelatedThe last few days I've had a problem where the Internet network connection speed on my Power Mac slows to a crawl (about 1Mbps) and can only be fixed by re-starting the Mac which restores normal connexction performance for a while. The Internet connection runs at around 35-37Mbps and is routed via a BT HomeHub 3. The laptops which connect via WiFi don't show any slowdown in speed tests, only the Mac Pro, which is connected to the Hub via Ethernet. I've tried swapping between the two Ethernet ports on the Mac but it doesn't make any difference. The HomeHub has been in for about 5 months but this problem has only just started in the last week or so and the period for which the restart restores the network performance seems to be decreasing. Is there any way to reset network software, or some prefs I could delete? It's an early 2008 eight-core Xeon MacPro running 10.6.8, 8GB RAM.Â

Suddenly the networking functionality has stopped working and the diagnostics fails to fix it. It shows all green lights apart from Internet and Server which both show as FAILED.Â
My router is operational and does assign the Mac Mini the correct IP address (confirmed by the Mac Mini and the Router). All other devices on the network work and can access the internet as usual. Â
I have tried everything that I can think of but just can't get it working again. Â
The same symptoms occur for both the wired ethernet and the wireless connection with the build-in airport.Â
