Intel Mac :: Understanding 32 And 64-bit Options?

Mar 6, 2012

I am a photographer, and understand that operating in 64 bit mode is an advantage.  I know that I have the 64 bit capability with my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (currently running OS 10.6.8, soon to upgrade to Lion), but I'm not certain if I actually am running in 64-bit mode, or if it is possible to have it running in 32-bit mode.  If there is an option, how do I find out what I am actually running, and how do I control it?

MacBook Pro :: Better Understanding ESATA Via ExpressCard And Pro Storage Options

Oct 27, 2009

Recently upgrading, I bought the newest MBP 17" specifically because it still had the expresscard slot (thinking having eSATA capability would make it the only pro laptop in the new lineup). I don't need my storage to be portable, I edit at home. Being new to RAID I've been researching and asking questions. I want to get the best setup for my money. People have recommended FW800 but that doesn't help me need to get the most speed possible, I feel eSATA is faster. I also want the redundancy in case a drive crashes. But the MBP only has one expresscard slot.

Does this mean my bandwidth is limited to one 300Mb/s channel? i.e. Should I not even consider RAID0 on a MBP since the bottleneck is 300MB/s? Barefeats recommends this adapter saying it's the fastest they tested at only 200MB/s! So what advantage will stripping give? It seems with only one available eSATA channel the MBP doesn't have many options for professional storage (although still faster than FW800). What would people recommend?..........

OS X :: Unable To Understanding Kernel Panic On Macbook?

Oct 15, 2010

I have read a million different posts, forums and most places people wouldn't want to go. This Mac is being very stubborn.

I have tried booting to safe mode, running the install disk, tried to load the utility on the install disk even tried a copy of diskwarrior (but I am not sure if it was a bootable copy).

In almost every instance the machine tries to load the cd and then spits it out and I get the restart screen. A few times I get the install to load but then it takes me to a screen that says something like startup run or install from these device after reboot, or something to that effect.

I even tried the command, option p r. If I just hit option with no disk it will list the mac hd. The machine is about 5 years old and is running osx 10.4.1?

This isnt my machine so I cant answer many questions about the OS. I was given a Snow Leopard 10.5 disk that appears to have been open.

Applications :: Understanding AirPlay And Its Potential Correctly

Nov 14, 2010

I'm not sure if this should be in the iPod forum, the Mac Apps forum (I can't believe there isn't an iTunes forum), or the MacRumors forum. Subject: Airplay. Went to the local Apple Store yesterday for a One-to-One appointment. I asked one of the associates if any of the dozen speakers they have on display were AirPlay compatible. He looked at me like I was crazy. After refreshing his memory on the topic briefly, he said that no, it was too new and suggested I add an Airport Express to my system to achieve my desired results (to stream music to speakers in my house). Question: Will AirPlay negate the need for an Airport Express? I'm expecting that very soon AirPlay compatible speaker(s) will come to market which will handle wirelessly all the necessary work to stream music from my iDevices to the speakers. Am I understanding AirPlay and its potential correctly?

Applications :: Understanding Apple's Mail And IMAP?

Dec 22, 2010

I've always struggled with Mail. I blame my confusion from going from Pop to IMAP. POP was simpler. Mail sat on server. When you used a POP connection mail moved from server to your computer. Imap is harder. Anyone have a good description (or link) on how imap works?

Here are my questions:
1. If you don't have a .mac account is there an easy way to keep Apple's Mail synched up on two machines? Is it as easy as keeping your mail folders (library) and apple mail plist file (preferences) synched up using a synch program?

2. When you open mail, with imap accounts it automatically goes to your account servers and seems to synch up the online version to what is on your computer. Launch Mail and in the activity window all sorts of things happen such as "synchronizing with server". This is before you tell Mail to "get mail". I'm wondering if the "get mail" is what puts a copy of emails on your computer or does just opening Mail with imap accounts do this?

3. If I had my choice, and mostly I do just use Google Mail online. However I want to have electronic copies of my emails for the day that the online cloud evaporates. Any easy way to accomplish this? I know there is something called G-Mail backup, but I wonder about it's functionality if I ever really had to rely on it. As of right now I'm using Mail for this purpose. Maybe Mail is the easiest way?

Applications :: Understanding ITunes Music Folder Files

How to make sense out of the clutter that has become of my iTunes Music Folder? Please see the screenshot below. I am quite certain that there is abunch of archival /legacy files within this folder, as well as a bunch of stuff that doesn't really need to be in this folder any longer, and I would like to know what is what so that I can begin cleaning things up a bit. Also when I make backups of my iTunes Library (minus the audio/video files) which files are the ones that need to be backed up? and the expanded view:

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Understanding File Search On New Mac Versus Windows?

Jun 8, 2012

I have a lot of computer experience, mostly with Windows.  This is my first Mac (MacBook Pro Lion). I'm having trouble understanding how to search for files with the Mac OS.For instance, let's say there's a file named "shakeyt" inside an application folder and I want to search for it (even though I know this file does exist there).  If I select the root of my hard drive and type "shakeyt" in the search box in Windows Explorer, it searches the entire drive and shows me all the results for that search, including the file "shakeyt" that I knew was there and it's path.

This does not seem to work for me in Lion.  When I select Macintosh HD or "this mac" or click on the Applications folder (where I know it exists) and type "shakeyt" in the search box (or in the spotlight search box) the only results that I get are a couple of emails that contain the word "shakeyt". I have looked through all the finder and system preferences to see if I have something set wrong but cannot find anything. Isn't there somewhere in this OS that you can simply type a word and it will show you all instances of this word (file names, text references, etc)?

Intel Mac :: Boot Options With Bluetooth Keyboard

Feb 6, 2012

I have an Intel iMac that came with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. There are a variety of options that can be used when you boot the Mac, such as hold down the C key to boot from a CD/DVD, hold down the option key to choose the boot drive, etc. When you have a BT keyboard, it doesn't connect until it is booted. How do you get the iMac to recognize, say, the Option key?

Intel Mac :: Apply Default View Options To ALL Existing?

May 8, 2012

I know that I can right-click (er, two-finger click) when I'm in a folder and set things like "Arrange By" / "Sort By" / "Icon Size" and then click "Use as Defaults," but it seems to only apply these to the new folders I create after I apply these settings (if they're applied at all, I'm having trouble figuring out what "Use as Defaults" even accomplishes.)

But I've already moved a ton of folders over from my old laptop, and they've got some seriously wonky view settings. There would be 3-4 folders right on top of one another, and then the folder I'm looking for is in no-mans-land 600 pixels to the right. It's a mess

I want every folder on my computer ever and forever to snap to grid, arrange by kind, and "float" to the top left (no gaps between files - fill'er'up!). How can I do this without going into every single folder and changing the settings individually?

(On another related note, is it possible to force folder contents to fit the window size? I dont want to have to scroll horizontally to see a folder's contents when I resize it.)

Intel Mac :: 24" Only Showing 2 Display Resolution Options?

Jun 16, 2012

Within the past week something changed after running a Mac software update that resulted in only having 2 display resolution options. The display choices now are limited to 1900 X 1200 and 960 X 600.  I think this happened after having a Mac software update.  I don't know what the updates were other then they were suggested as part of the automatic software updates check.

Running OS X Lion version 10.7.4.   Graphics =  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 128 MB. I have rebooted and checked for additional updates put still only seeing 2 choices. why all the other resolution options disappeared?

Mac :: Disk Options On New 2.8 Nto Mac Pro?

I recently purchased a 2.8 octo Mac Pro that came with a stock 200 Gig HD. I purchased a WD 640 Caviar Blue HD for a boot drive and 3x 1 Tb Samsung Spinpoints for data and backup. When I got the Mac I simply took out the stock drive, put in the WD and did a clean install off the install DVD?s. The machine performs very well when it?s running my apps, like Pro Tools, but it?s sometimes a bit fragile when performing mundane tasks like burning dvd?s while surfing safari f.eks. It tends to freeze up quite a bit. Then I noticed also that the Samsung drives I put in it are a bit unresponsive. i.e. when i move files between folders on the extra Samsungs there is a few seconds of "lag" while before I can open the folders again.
