Intel Mac :: Can't Select Options In Time Machine
Apr 25, 2012
Time Machine no longer works for me. Apparently the volume of stuff it wants to back up is too large for the partition devoted to it (on an external hard drive). But I can't choose the exclude anything because the Options button in Time Machine Prefs is greyed out. I've deleted the TimeMachine .plist file, and restarted, but no go. And I haven't found anything to help either here or on the larger web

I have recently upgraded to 10.10 (fresh install and only migrated network settings and documents). I was setting up my Time Machine and choosing which folders to exclude from the backup when suddenly when I clicked on the plus button to add another directory the finder window shows all the folders as greyed out and unable to be selected. This applies to ALL files on the hard drive. Screen shot attached. I have performed a repair permissions and still a problem. Also performed a repair on the disk to and no change. Needless to say I have performed a reboot as well.Â

I have a 21" iMac and a Mac Mini, both of which I upgraded to Maverick a week ago. Since then, I have not been able to get Time Machine to backup. I can connect to the disk through my network, but Time Machine does not recognize it exists. I have gone through User and Groups, I have checked everything I can think of through System Preferences, and nothing has worked, including Sharing. I have another computer and am able to backup it, after programming the mini.

I have 3 drives used. Bay 1 is for OS/Apps, Bay 2 for VM's (Fusion), Bay 3 is just for data (music, photos, movies, iwork docs...) Lets say I have a big enough Time Machine Drive to back up everything all drives. One day The drive in Bay 1 dies, which holds the OS/Apps. I replace with a new drive, and select from Restore from Time Machine. Is Time machine smart enough to just restore all data from HD Bay 1? Nothing happened to the other drives.

I do not know if this has been posted before or not...But I found [as have others] that it is a GOOD idea to exclude all of the Parallels .HDD files from a Time Machine Backup. Parallels stores the entire Windows "hard drive" as a single file under OSX, and while this is transparent to the end-user, any time any "windows" file is updated [ie. everytime you do something under Windows], that ENTIRE file is marked as updated.

Does anyone know the e-mail address at Apple to which I could send a rather paranoid and panicked question about Time Machine?I had to restore from a Time Machine backup this morning, and the backup had saved everything except my iPhoto library, so years of photographs (including my impossible-to-duplicate trip to Ireland) are gone.

I just got a message that my Time Machine external backup disk is full. I have another external drive I can use, but buying drives every few months is going to get expensive.
I was wondering what others are doing in this situation.
Is anybody archiving the Time Machine backup? If so, what software are you using and where are you storing your backup?
What kind of backup plans are you using with Time Machine?

I've just bought the new Airport Extreme Base Station last night. I set up everything just fine. I've set up an external HD to the USB port and got it to work fine so far in terms of file sharing and reading and writing. I also have a dedicated Time Machine external HD attached to my MBP USB drive.Does Time Machine backup shared airport drives? This is a deal breaker for me. When I go into time machine after my latest backup, the shared airport drive doesn't show up .Am I missing something? Can time machine back up anything connected to the AEBS?

On my mac mini I get a printer window which allows me to select duplex printing. On my powerbook G4 I get a menu with far fewer options. THis has not always been so, I used to get the same window and options with both computers. If upgrades to OSX have caused this how can I get round the problem

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I have 2 drives on my iMac but only one is showing up..how can I get them both to back up? The one that is getting backed up is from my old laptop, and I really don't need it as most of the data is in my newer iMac drive. If necessary, I would like to switch the back up to the newer system.

I know this is a common issue and I've read all the other posts and tried everything, but time machine still won't back up. I need help figuring out if there's anything I can do, or if I need a bigger back up disk. If so, how big?Â
I have deleted old backups, excluded unnecessary files, and cleaned out folders. It says 157.46GB available of 159.7GB; but when it backs up it says it requires 188.30GB but only 157.46GB are available. Â

I am non-technical! Following many months of successful automatic back-ups to an external hard disc I find that Time Machine had failed to back-up data since October 2011 for no apparent reason that I am aware. The last file name on the backup hard disc had a file name of the date and time with a suffix '.inprogress' (though the little symbol in the top right corner of the screen did not indicate activity). I dragged and dropped this file in Trash and went through the 'Repair' process for the back-up disc though this process did not indicate that there was a fault with the backup disc. Then restarted the iMac and clicked on Start Backup Now. The process started as normal but after a few moments I got the message 'The Backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disc'. Again a '.inprogress' file was created on the backup hard drive. The backup hard disc is under 10% used.

I wanted a clean install of Lion, so I copied over my iTunes library, saved my Mail as an mbox file, and moved all of my critical files to an external drive. But I completely forgot to save my iPhoto library. I have been running Time Machine for almost a year and I see that I have the file still on my NAS but it says I don't have the permissions to open it up. I can only open Time Machine backups since I reinstalled Lion. I have kept the same machine name and, I believe, username. It did not create a different Time Machine backup--there are still the same three files for the three different computers I am running Time Machine on. Is there any way I can restore my iPhoto library from the old Time Machine backup?Â

I thought I could use a 1TB External drive to back up my 320GB startup disk, and use the rest of the empty 680GB for storage. However, Time Machine started taking up 600GB of spaceon the External drive! I was like "What the heck!?" So I put unwanted Time Machine Backups in the trash and emptied it. Nothing, they're stuck there now.Â
I'm planning on wiping the disk clean and starting over, but for future reference is there a proper way to delete Time Machine Backups? Surely there must be; (I mean, who would have known Time Machine would take up MORE SPACE than the drive it's backing up in the first place?
