Intel Mac :: Switching From MobileMe To ICloud But Can't Upgrade To Lion?
Apr 7, 2012
My iMac is too old to upgrade to Lion, so when I switch from MobileMe to iCloud, I understand that I will no longer be able to use my desktop mail app to retrieve mail, and my calendars and contacts will no longer be in sync with my iPad and iPhone. So when I switch over to iCoud, is there any work-around for this so that I can continue to use the desktop mail app on my iMac or otherwise get mail on my desktop, and keep my mail, calendars and contacts synced between my iMac, iPad and iPhone?

I have a MBP 1,1 Core Duo which will not support Lion. I also have an iPad. I cannot upgrade to get iOS 5 features. I also am having problems seeing my me.com mail on my MBP in Mail and don't want to have to use Safari to get mail. What are my options short of buying a new Mac

I've had my MobileMe account since 2003. Had my three Macs since my first G4 and added to them as I could afford.I also have an iPhone 3G. All have access to my MobileMe.
I also have my website on MobileMe. Can I ask, what happens, as I got a warning to switch, as my MobileMe will end soon, if I can't have Lion on my computers? My 11 years of connection to MobileMe will all be lost?Â
I live in Greece and Mac prices are through the roof here. This is a forced upgrade tactic, I feel. Will there be no alternative to online mail for the lesser mortals without Lion?Â
Could I have an answer, and not get deleted again, as, as the email states, time is running out.Â

I have no desire to upgrade my MBP 2010 to Lion, yet I have a MM account and use AddressBook, Mail, iCal, Facetime. What should I do? I'd rather sit it out 'till Mountain Lion is out. Can I still use said 3 apps?

I think I blew up my MobileMe. I had recently moved my Mac over to Lion, so was ready to make the switch from Me to iCloud. I found the process somewhat confusing over the course of things (which took place in stages over several weeks). Somehow I ended up with two AppleIDs. Fortunately, all my purchases were with the old, main one. But when I moved to iCloud, it moved it with the new one. I ended up deleting the iCloud new accound off my iPhone and iPad and reinstating the original ID there. But probably lost all that was in my Me account (I think a couple of photos and some files that were on the iDisk). I'm mostly posting this so others will possibly check their accounts before making the move to iCloud. Others might not be so lucky to not lose anything important in this switch.

I have an old pre-Intel G5 Mac desktop and want to keep using Mobile me Mail and Entourage because they work so well and I have been using them for 10 years. I cannot get the mail system to work having moved everything else to iCloud. Followed the instructions but it just does not work and the mail.mac.com server will not accept my password. Any ideas?

I spent some time avoiding Lion after being part of seeding, even to the extent of buying a new MacPro last year, that would not require Lion. I wish to stay with Snow Leopard until a new OS apeals to me, might be Mountain Lion, might be Puma or Lynx. I now see that I have been caught out - MobileMe, iCal, iSync, iDisk etc will end and move (with limited comparability to MobileMac) to iCloud, and so far, it seems that this requires Lion exclusively!Â
Is this really so? Has Apple really become so violently unfriendly to its friends and associates - its Users, that it will actively and knowingly ignore their pleas, for a return to intelligent Operating Systems and Applications - I was told recently that Apple was only interested in those who are not yet Mac users. This would be very sad.Â
It does fit though with Apple's behaviour regarding FCP - I'd used used FCP since version 1, now I must stay with the ever aging version 7 or go to Adobe or Avid - neither of whom I enjoy working with. I might just have to invest huge money into a Heavyworks or Quantel system - I loathed FCPX! But really this is ultimately about Apple's direction. Why has it now become so narrow, when once it was possible to be many versions behind the current and still function?

Switching website from Mobile Me to Go Daddy if pages made with Go Live (not iWeb). Do we access the SITES folder or the WEB ->SITES folder. I remember a while back Apple switched from accessing our webpages from the SITES folder at the first level. They created a folder entited WEB and put an RSS and a SITES folder within it. They did something to the index to "point" to this folder.Â
1) I've created my pages with Go Live. I have successfully used them with my iDisk. I did not use iWEB.
2) I have bought hosting on Go Daddy.
3) I cannot seem to have the webpage open as it does in iDisk
4) Am I supposed to access and transfer the files INSIDE this path:Â iDisk --> WEB --> Sites
OR
this path:Â iDisk -> SitesÂ
5) I can't remember why Apple started the new folder, but the dates seem older if I go to iDisk --->WEB --> Sites
6) I've been uploading my new files to iDisk--Sites. The dates are my newer filesÂ
I uploaded the folder to Go Daddy, but I need to type a longer path to get it to find the index.html fileÂ
I also have other folders I put at the root level. I'm not even trying to get to them yet. I'm trying to get the site to open to
one folder only at this time. I can't even get it to do that.Â
Can someone please tell me what Apple did about 2 years ago to create an index that "pointed" the the correct opening page? Or, can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I copied the entire folder.Â

I am not sure how it happened but after upgrading the gmail account, the user accounts were changed from standard users to Mobile Me users. None of the users has ever had that type of account, and I am trying to figure out how to get it back to a standard user account. When the user attempts to log in, it asks for the user name, but also the Mobile Me user name (which they do not have). to make it worse, Mobile Me is no longer accpting new users, so I annot just add an account and log in using the new info.

My husband and I rely heavily on our shared calendars through MobileMe and I've yet to switch to iCloud because of the complications I'm sensing it will cause us.I have an old MacBook that I've read can't be upgraded to Lion because it doesn't have the necessary hardware.I use iCal mostly in my MacBook and on my iPhone when I'm on the go. My husband just uses it on his iPhone. My question is - when I am forced to switch over to iCloud, will we lose our calendars that I can use on my MacBook? Will they only be available on our iPhones or online? Am I able to have all the functionality of our current calendars (with relative ease of use and syncing from a computer) without having to get a whole new computer/upgraded hardware?

I am reluctant to upgrade to Lion due to being quite happy with OS 10.6.8, but now am looking for extra backup and storage after 3 external hard drives dying. Question: can I access iCloud using 10.6.8. on my iMac? - don't have an ipad, as yet. Or an iPhone. What are the major changes between Lion and Snow Leopard, and how difficult would it be to get used to using it, as it sounds like it is catering for those with iPads and/or iPhones and the ways of interacting with those items.Â

I believe I've researched enough posts here on Apple Discussions to tell me that what I want to do is possible, but I want to confirm it before I take some irrevocable action. So, first I'll describe what I want to do, then my understanding of how to do it, and then ask my questions.  I want to keep my mac.com email functionality for my primary account, my aliases, and my email-only accounts—all of which use mac.com addresses. For now, I don't care about contacts, calendars, bookmarks, or any other syncing except mail server syncing with my SeaMonkey mail client on multiple Snow Leopard Macs.I can't install Lion (yet) on all of my Snow Leopard computers. I have some software compatibility issues that have yet to be resolved, and one machine (Macbook Pro Core Duo) isn't compatible with Lion at all.I have several IMAP and POP mail accounts that forward to my primary mac.com address, and I would like that to continue. It's my understanding that I can log into my MobileMe account, select the "Not all devices meet requirements" option, agree to the iCloud Terms of Service, and then click the Move to iCloud button to use Apple's mail services with iCloud after MobileMe ends. Here are my questions:Will the move to iCloud work as described?Do I need to claim I have Lion installed on all devices? (I don't.)Will all of my existing mac.com email-only accounts and aliases continue to work after I move to iCloud? (I seem to recall reading somewhere that the paid-for email-only accounts will work, but the aliases wont...but I'm not certain that's correct.)Will I have full access to all iCloud features on any Mac on which Lion is installed?I currently have some web content hosted on my iDisk, and I understand that the iDisk will disappear on July 1. Is there some equivalent functionality in iCloud, wherein iCloud will host browser-based web content? That doesn't appear to be the case, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.Â
