Intel Mac :: Professional Video Conversion Software That Converts .mov To OGG Theora And/or WebM?
Feb 27, 2012
I'm looking for a professional grade video conversion software that can convert Quicktime (.mov) files to HTML5 video formats such as Ogg Theora and WebM. There are tons of free ones but I haven't found one that does a very good job. I've tried Bigasoft's converters but I'm a bit disappointed with their very basic quality settings. I'd like to have more control over parameters such as bitrates, variable passes, etc.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Its been a little while since I moved into Mac and until now I've still been using basic windows-like programs. Now its time to use the power of Mac and the well promoted programs for media and making movies as I have an idea in my mind. Only I've never used before and I don't know which one is professional. I want a highly capable movie editor, to make a professional movie like on Discovery Channel they do. To be able to apply effects (fade in, out, etc).

I am trying to convert an .mkv file using handbrake, I am trying to convert it to a mp4, but it will only convert the first four seconds of video, than output it, saying that "your handbrake que is done" Problem is, its no where near done. The video is over an hour and a half long.

My new (2010) 17 inch MBP (i5, 4GB RAM) is converting video from avi to MP4 much more slowly than my older Windows XP machine (Centrino Duo 2Ghz, 2GB RAM). I am using Red Kawa PSP 9. On my MBP it takes about 14 minutes to convert from AVI to MP4. Identical video on my old XP laptop takes about 8 minutes. Any reason why this should be happening? I just don't get it. My MBP should be lightyears ahead in speed than my old HP laptop.

I'm an old-school Visual Hub user when it comes to converting video formats. Unfortunately, that app is no longer being made and it doesn't solve my current problem so looking for some advice. My nephew won an MP3/video player as part of a contest at school. Its not an iDevice but its a prize and he's enamored with it. The problem is, although it supports video, it only seems to support files formatted in the "MTV" format which I understand to be really limited technology.
Can anyone recommend a decent media conversion program that will let me convert MP4's, AVI's and such to the MTV format? Its likely time I upgrade from Visual Hub anyways so I don't mind spending some money on a useful app. The problem is most of those I see mentioned in the forums here don't specifically mention the MTV format.

I have a bunch of mkv video files with ass subtitles, and I've tried Handbrake, which is fine and dandy except it doesn't support .ass subtitles or the Xvid format. Anyone know a good video conversion software that supports encoding to Xvid/Divx, .ass subtitle, and mp3 audio?

I've got the flip4Mac that allows WMV files to play in Quicktime, but it doesn't work too well, so I was wondering if there's something free that I can use to convert a WMV file to AVI, or MPEG, or anything that works normally with Quicktime.

Pundits are roasting Apple over a scuffle raised by Mozilla and Opera to define the free Ogg Theora video codec as the official way to present video on the web in the new HTML 5 specification. The problem: HTML isn't supposed to define content codecs, and even if it were, Ogg Theora, commercially abandoned nearly a decade ago, doesn't have what it takes to deliver video on the increasingly mobile web. While the tech media has largely portrayed the disagreement as either a huge roadblock for HTML 5 or a war between free software advocates and big corporations, the reality is that specifications like HTML 5 are not intended to enforce political views but rather to foster interoperability. At issue is the video format specified in the new HTML 5, a situation that is new because the HTML specification has never defined a simple system for embedding video in the same way that web developers can place ordinary graphics within their pages.

Despite the unbridled enthusiasm among bloggers for Google's newly announced free WebM codec, a digital video expert has reviewed the new VP8 specification and delivered a severely deflating technical analysis, noting that it decodes video slowly, is buggy, and copies H.264 closely enough to all but guarantee patent issues. What could possibly go wrong? The knee jerk reaction to Google's announcement was to ask whether Microsoft and Apple would immediately jump to support the new codec, given that the two companies offer the default choice in web browsers to nearly all desktop users, and given Apple's strong influence over mobile devices.

I have converted the movies of my hard drive camera into playable quicktime movies and they look great in Quicktime...and they play in 16:9 mode. Now I want to edit them and when I import them into imoveHD or the newer version which comes with iLife it converts them into 4:3 I also noticed that imoveHD imports the movie as a NTSC project and the option to make it PAL does not exist.

I'm using OS 10.4.11. When I email PDFs, they are automatically converted to JPGs unless I create an "archive" of them, in which case lots of people can't open them, including Mac and PC users. As a sometime graphic artist, this is a real concern. On my old iMac using OS 9, I never had this problem.

I am having a whole series of software disasters. Now it is with the Mac Calculator.app.I accidentally clicked 'Update rates' while Calcu;lator was doing a conversion. It jammed up and would not close. Now it works perfectly well in all its modes, and it converts lengths, weights & masses, etc., but if I enter a figure and choose Convert/Currency, nothing at all happens.
I have tried deleting all .plist files associated with Calculator. In [my name]/Library/Application Support/Calculator, there are two files: FinancialRates.plist (which I tried deleting) and FinancialRates.xml. I tried double-clicking on the second of these. Safari opened, but showed a message saying something like 'Bad request'. I suspect that this is where the problem lies.

I am going to look for some legitimate, used software, but want to buy the right version. Version 6 says it will requires 10.2.2. Would that run on 4, and maybe 5?

I shoot about 40 weddings per year. (2500-3000 images per week). I am currently working off a 2 x2.66 Dual Core MacPro with 11GB of memory. I use Aperture and a bit of Final Cut Pro.I need the MacPro for storage issues related to iTunes and photo libraries so I have ruled out an iMac. My question is, when will I cross the "overkill" line. I don't spend my days doing intensive 3D render outputs of math computations so I know a 12 core is "too much".

So am I suppose to add the Service, the RAM, and the Hard Drive to my basket and it knows what to do? When I get the box, do I go to a local FedEx facility to send it back? Is there anything else I need to know? I need advice from people who have sent in there Macs to OWC. Sorry if I sound like a noob, I am new to Macs and just wondering how the service works.
