im looking for a Freeware Bootable Defrag App for Mac OSX 10.6
i know you's are going to say "macs dont need to be defragged" but they do
reason being when you use a mac for around a year or so and seriously load up your hard drive it generates files which cannot be moved. (files over 20mb's) why do i need to move them?
when you are creating a boot camp partition it needs to move files away from the partitioning part of your drive but some files cannot be moved without a full defrag and nothing including repairing the disc or repairing permissions can fix it to move those files even if you boot of the cd.
the only 2 things that can fix it is 1: a defrag or 2: a format
so! anyone know of a freeware bootable defrag for osx because im not up for a format.
I have 205 files that were accidentally deleted from my computers hard drive. The files are visible in PodSalvage. Can any Macintosh genius, hackers etc. direct me to a freeware application or method to recover the files?

I found an old topic from 2005 about this, but the suggestions either required a purchase or were absolute overkill (like Eclipse.... wow....no).
I would prefer it not to be a Java application, because those are slow and look like poo.
I know that TextEdit can be used, but I'd like one that can at least highlight the tags. It would be nice if it could perform checks, too.
I also tried googling around, but I didn't find what I needed.
Handbrake won't work for this and I can't find one except for fake ones you buy,

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have converted the movies of my hard drive camera into playable quicktime movies and they look great in Quicktime...and they play in 16:9 mode. Now I want to edit them and when I import them into imoveHD or the newer version which comes with iLife it converts them into 4:3 I also noticed that imoveHD imports the movie as a NTSC project and the option to make it PAL does not exist.

I'm using OS 10.4.11. When I email PDFs, they are automatically converted to JPGs unless I create an "archive" of them, in which case lots of people can't open them, including Mac and PC users. As a sometime graphic artist, this is a real concern. On my old iMac using OS 9, I never had this problem.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI am having a whole series of software disasters. Now it is with the Mac Calculator.app.I accidentally clicked 'Update rates' while Calcu;lator was doing a conversion. It jammed up and would not close. Now it works perfectly well in all its modes, and it converts lengths, weights & masses, etc., but if I enter a figure and choose Convert/Currency, nothing at all happens.
I have tried deleting all .plist files associated with Calculator. In [my name]/Library/Application Support/Calculator, there are two files: FinancialRates.plist (which I tried deleting) and FinancialRates.xml. I tried double-clicking on the second of these. Safari opened, but showed a message saying something like 'Bad request'. I suspect that this is where the problem lies.
I'm looking for a professional grade video conversion software that can convert Quicktime (.mov) files to HTML5 video formats such as Ogg Theora and WebM. There are tons of free ones but I haven't found one that does a very good job. I've tried Bigasoft's converters but I'm a bit disappointed with their very basic quality settings. I'd like to have more control over parameters such as bitrates, variable passes, etc.

I am living in South Korea, and have been collecting Korean DVDs for the last year. I'm planning on leaving Korea, and would like to take my collection with me, so I don't have to deal with the region coding issues back home.
I have used Handbrake to rip a couple of my DVDs with subtitles embedded, but I would like to get them into .avi files for easy use with USB ports on DVD players back home.
Is there a way to get Handbrake to rip the DVDs into .avi format? or do I need another program to convert/compress them into .avi? Is there a good freeware program to convert/compress?

(2)The system on my ibook G4 is Tiger 10.4.11 - can I only use programs that specifically say they are for 10.4.11, or I am correct in thinking that any program said to be for 10.4 will work on 10.4.11?
Also, would a program said to be for the Tiger 10.4 range work on the versions before mine (e.g., 10.1 Puma) and after mine (e.g., 10.5 Leopard)? For example, on the Truecrypt website it says the 'latest Stable Version - 6.2a' is for 'Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5', so I assume this will work on my 10.4.11 system. However, for example, if it only said '10.5', I assume I should not download/install this for Tiger?

I just bought a new Samsung USB DVD drive for $50 that is capable of writing & reading in every conceivable disk mode. However, Tiger's Disk Utility really doesn't support writing & reading multi-session (SAO) disks. Does anyone know any of any freeware DVD disk burning software that supports multi-session disk burning & reading?
I recently installed a current model DVD drive in my brother's Toshiba 2100 CDT (vintage 2000) running Windows 2000 Pro & got a program called CDBurnerXP that writes & reads multi-session disks & now I'm frustrated that I can't do it on my iMac or my wife's MacBook both running Tiger 10.4.11.
