Intel Mac :: No Sound On Cold Start After Upgrading To Lion
Mar 26, 2012
I am running the 27" iMac with dual hard drives and have recently upgraded to Lion. Two things are happening.
1. On cold start / boot up, my system has no sound. And by no sound I mean - no sound. When I go to the Sound option in System Preferences, everything is greyed out and I can not adjust or access any of the controls. The only solution has been to immediately restart my computer. After restart, everything is fine.
2. On cold start / boot up, sometimes I receive a pop up telling me that TestGen is not installed properly and to please re-start. Of course, since I have no sound I'm automatically doing that.
Lastly, and I'm not adding this to the list because there is already a thread about it . . but I will mention it I am getting error messages trying to play certain videos "This video requires Quicktime which is not supported by this version of iTunes."The workaround is that you apparently have to delete the video from your Library -- DO NOT DELETE FILE FROM HARD DRIVE -- and re-add to your Library.

Early 2008
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05

This is the first time I've encountered this. Upon cold booting the machine it went directly to the legacy Mac OS X Server login screen from before the upgrade to Mavericks. It would not let me login with current credentials. I had no choice but to hard power off. It returned to normal operation on restart.
It could be a possible bug.

So as the title says when I boot up my iMac, on occasion, it seems to have the "Updating" Status bar, then the mac boots normally, then the sound is disabled. As I said though this dose not happed all the time but when it dose the only way to fix it is by rebooting the iMac once again. if I like to upgrade to Lion - do I really have to buy Leopard as well as Lion - only to install Lion?I bought Leopard already and thought I could upgrade easily and free to Lion. Actually I have installed Leopard 10.6.8 and now it seams that I have to buy Lion to be able to upgrade.

Currently I have an iMac 10.5.8 with an Intel Core 2 Duo and 2Go Ram. Since January I didn't had much system updates because my software is apparently too old ... And I am kind of paranoid about the Trojans that I might have because I use the old version plus Safari is getting blocked very often. So I decided to by first Snow Leopard and then Lion. The thing is that I live in Norway & I will have to use the Norwegian apple store to by those programs but my OS X is in French. So I was wondering if I will be able to choose my language or the whole system will be automatically in Norwegian? The second question is to know if it is difficult to upgrade? I am a Mac user because I don't have any clues about the computers and Mac is always working. I read some complaints from people who after installing Snow Leopard couldn't use properly their printers or other apps... Is there is something I (completely ignorant person) should be aware of before doing the upgrade? Â

I received the Snow Leopard upgrade disc from Apple. The instructions read to simply upgrade to SL version 10.6.8 after running the installation disc, and then to purchase the Lion upgrade from the Mac App. However, this SL version seems to be 10.5.8, and none of the 10.6.8 or lower updates will work. I found a 10.6.1, but that won't install either. They all say that I need OS 10.6 and I can't find it. I have a 2009 iMac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

I have a Time Machine 1.2 which worked perfectly on my old iMac OSX. A few months ago I purchased a new iMac which came with Snow Leopard, and it worked well. But when Apple came to upgrade me to Lion, the Time Machine no longer works.  Is it not compatible with Lion??Â
At one stage I was told there was no room on the disk. I then tried to delete most of the previous backups, leaving only a handful of backups - but still no luck. I think I might have messed up things by then trying to edit the "do not back up" list. I tried to exclude some programmes applications , and now I am told there are no disks available to be backed up.
It is not very clear on the "options" screen, what one should do. What does the + and - indicate, and is it necessary to remove any files at all if I want a simple regular backup procedure on my home computer.
Lastly - if I wanted to uninstall and reinstall the Time Machine - is there a procedure?? I can't find one.

I have first revision iMac G5 with 1.8GHz processor and 17" display, graphics adapter is NVIDIA FX 5200. Problem is that the machine seems to work only if cold booted, if I shut it down after succesful boot (after some use) and wait just little after powering it up again, it will display artifacts and/or lock up. When booted succesfully, I was able to play Halo for 20 minutes (after that I quitted) and run various benchmarks. When the machine is in "artifact mode" Apple Hardware Test says that GPU is the fault, but isn't it strange that I was able to play Halo for such a long time, 3D games are the ones which should tax the GPU and reveal flaws? Also when cold booted to AHT everything passes.Â
I know that this model suffers from bad caps and I have already replaced some of them, not all, but with no difference. I cannot look inside the power supply properly because there are security screws which require their own type of screwdriver.

I have an iMac 20
2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
Running OS X - 10.7.3Â
Lately the machine is not detecting wireless keyboard, trackpad, and mouse unless the iMac is restarted. I tried to run the AHT using the restart and holding the D key but this doesn't seem to work I'm not sure how to run the AHT using the original DVDs, especially if the original OS was Leopard or Snow Leopard.Â

After installing OS X Lion on my Imac (middle 2007)
start up is very slow. Screen stays white with grey progress bar very slow to complete.
Then, after maybe 15 minutes, the desk screen appears and the Imac seems to work normally. I had upgraded the RAM to 3 Go before installing OS X Lion.

I have added all of the updates and patches but the problem continues. It started with one application and now it's happening to others where they shut down suddenly at start-up and have to be restared and the windows restored. It's a brand new computer and wasn't doing this initially.

My father who is 91 purchased an iMac in January used it once. He is now just setting it up again after he has recently moved and this will be his only computer… finally getting rid of the PC world of Bill Gates and into a real computer. However, he has forgotten the login password at start-up which was set-up at the Apple Store. Can I reboot the machine with a CD (have one for Snow Leopard) and change administration details this way even though is running OS X Lion?Â

I'm trying to help a friend get into her old PowerBook 165 but we can't get it to boot up. Whenever it turns on we get the BONG startup sound and then it just flashes a floppy drive with a question mark. We can't get it to go any further and we're at a loss for how to get the files off of it now.

Just bought today, brand new mac pro 8 core 2.8ghz. I get a weird click on both boot and start up or when I put the computer to sleep or wake it. It's a single click, imagine the sound of someone lightly flicking the side of an empty Pepsi can. It's not random, I can make it do the sound simply by unplugging or re-plugging the power cord in the back. Is this normal?
