Intel Mac :: Install A SATAII / SATAIII SSD In An 2.16 C2D 2006?

Apr 20, 2012

As the title suggests, I am after info on anyone who has a 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and has upgraded the hard drive to be a SSD. My iMac is going in for repair this weekend due to a broken power supply, I had the original 500GB hard drive taken out, but I'm thinking about upgrading the hard drive to an SSD, however as the current SSD's are SATA-III I'm not sure if it would work. Ideally I would like to keep the 500GB hard drive in there as well as the SSD.

If you have a late 2006/Early 2007 Core2Duo Macbook Pro (ideally UK-bought 2.33GHz), could you please attempt to do the following: Create a bootcamp partition and install Windows XP pro Install all the relevant updates to your bootcamp partition including Apple bootcamp utility updates Attempt to reboot from windows, either to OSX or back into windows again Let me know the result. I'm trying to investigate if there is an inherent fault in this batch of machines, as mine cannot successfully do this, and i think Apple have a case to answer for, though i may be wrong...

Mar 6, 2010

I have a 'aging' 2006 mac pro with dual 2.66 mhz cpu's. The system is snappy enough for most tasks on the mac side but when running windows 7 pro 64 bit and ripping some of my bluerays the cpu's peg at 100% and it takes a while. My question is how does my 2.66ghz dual cpu mac pro compare cpu wise against the new intel core i7 930 cpu family? I know I cannot drop one into my mac pro but I have been thinking about building a new pc with the i7 and picking up a mac mini for my wife who refuses to leave the mac camp then sell my old mac pro.

Intel Mac :: A1174 Early 2006 Won't Turn On?

May 10, 2012

I have an IMac, early 2006, A1174.  Went to awake it from sleep last night, and the power was off.  I hit the button to turn it on, no response.  I tried different outlets and power cords, same results.  The front light doesn't come on, but I do hear the spinning for a split second. I've never had this problem before.  I tried leaving it unplugged for several minutes, and I also unplugged my printer, keyboard, external hard drive, everything!  No different results.

Intel Mac :: White 2006 Loud Humming Noise?

May 11, 2012

I have a 2006 White Intel Imac and I recently replaced the Superdrive with a non apple Panasonic Superdrive Model: UJ-85J-B from a used Acer Laptop.  The replacement drive has no sensor circuit board.  After putting it back together there was a loud humming noise and I assumed it was the new drive but when I took it out and started the Imac without it the noise remained?  Now I am thinking it is the fan just below where the Superdrive sits?  I blew out as much dust as I could from this fan and around the bottom of the case and that made the noise just a little less annoying.  It sounds like it is about to take off like an jet airplane?

Intel Mac :: Why Won't Late 2006 (5,1) Finish The Login Process

Jun 23, 2012

... after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. Did a straight upgrade from install (not an archive & install).

It gets to the login screen quickly, enter password and then endless beachball.

Started in single user mode and did fsck, restarted from install disk & repaired (no problems) and repaired preferences. Restarted with PRAM reset. Restarted in safe mode.

No problems booting from DVD.

ONE TIME I rebooted after single user mode and it worked, I used that opportunity to run the combo updater (downloaded today from Apple).

I did find a support page that spoke of a similar condition in early aluminum (2007) iMacs, but this file would not install on my machine.

I did an archive and install of Leopard and then updated via Software Update, which should have gotten any updates needed for this machine. Now again, it only boots as far as the blue screen (on auto login). I did not see a similar update file needed for THIS iMac.

IMac :: Using Gradient With IMac ISight Intel 2006?

Recently my iMac had been experiencing problems, I took apart and checked everything and put back together. Problems were gone but the screen suddenly started gradienting from brighter on the top to darker on the bottom. Brightness overall is also lower now.

My question is what can be creating this? The black tape that was around was ripped, I've heard it's creating static isolation, can that be it? Also I possibly pulled power cord too hard, can it be possible that display is not getting enough power?

MacBook Pro :: Getting 2006 MacBook Pro To Work With Intel SSD?

Dec 1, 2010

It's been a while since I was last here but I've come to you guys requesting some help.

I have a 2006 MacBook pro that I've been trying to install a new Intel X18-M 80Gb SSD in, to no avail.

The main problem is that when I pop in the Leopard installer and boot up into it, the disk is not recognized by Disk Utility or even in System Profiler, same thing happens when I connect the SSD via USB while running OSX.

I know the drive is not dead as I can see it in Windows and use it perfectly. I've tried formatting it to NTFS, FAT32, and HFS+ then putting it in the MacBook but it still refuses to see it. I made sure to set it as a GUID partition and I still see nothing in the Installer or even OSX.

I know the drive is SATA II standard (3Gb/s) and my MacBook only has SATA I (1.5Gb/s) so I'm not sure if that means it's a lost cause or if I can do anything about it.

Mac Pro :: Crossfire In 2006 Mac Pro?

Sep 5, 2010

I have a 2006 Mac Pro and I'm wondering if CrossFireX is possible on this system. Specifically with two 5770s.

My understanding is that CrossFireX requires two PCIe 2.0 16x slots. However, the 2006 Mac Pro only has PCIe 1.x slots, and with two cards, it's only possible to have its slots running at 8x. Does this prevent CrossFireX from working at all, or is it simply a case of it working fine but running at reduced performance?

Mac Pro :: Replacing 2006 Mac Pro ?

Sep 25, 2010

I currently have an original 2006 Mac Pro (dual 2.66GHz) which has served me well over the past 4+ years but I'm thinking that the time has come to look for a replacement.

Here are the replacement machines I've been looking at along with my thoughts...

2010 MacPro - 2.8GHz Quad
While I like the price point ($2500), I'm not sure how much of a performance boost I will get over my current machine. Also the processor architecture is the previous generation (Nehalem vs Westmere). Is that a legit concern?

2010 MacPro - 3.2GHz Quad
Once again, chip architecture and performance (to a lesser extent due to the higher clock speed) are concerns but $2,900 is doable from a financial standpoint.

2010 MacPro - 3.33GHz Hex
This is the one I really want but $3,700 is out of my price range.

2009 MacPro (Refurbished) - 2.93GHz Quad
This configuration drew some interest when I saw it in the refurbished section of the Apple Online Store mainly due to the $2,500 price tag.

The computer will be mainly used for graphics creation/editing (Photoshop) and web development (Dreamweaver) as well as for web surfing, e-mail, photo and music management and MS Office applications. I also run Parallels because there are a couple of applications that I need to run that are Windows-only.

So my question to the MacRumors' community is which of the above machines would you recommend or should I just stand pat with my 2006 MacPro and wait for the next refresh.

I did consider an iMac but the 21" is a little underpowered IMO and the 27" will not fit on my desk.

Mac Pro :: 2006 Won't Display Anything?

May 26, 2012

My mac pro won't display anything. I've had a look at this [URL] and one of the first things I did was reset the PRAM & NVRAM. The 10.6.8 install is fully updated. The startup chime plays and fans run normally.

I have: re-sat the RAM,cleaned the RAMcleaned the insideremoved all the HDDs except the main oneand even used another Raedon 4850 in place of mine.

It starts up in Target-Disk mode fine, I am using it with my iMac now but it is not the same (iMac is only dual core andhas half the RAM) I've tried several screens; DVI, VGA and HDMI all without luck. It's obviouslt out of warranty and I don't want to take it to a Apple store anyway as I ocassionally build & repair computers myself so am fine with trying anything out.

Things I could do/ haven't done: Remove/ replace the Logic Board battery?test the power I/O?start in Safe Mode?
