I consistently find that when using Safari (or Firefox), within a short period of time (sometimes even less than one hour), the browser has taken over nearly all available memory. This happens even when the browser is the only program in use, and when no webpages with extensive audio or video content are open.Â
Can someone explain to me why this happens -- i.e., why web browsers seem to hog all the memory they can find -- and (more importantly) whether I can take steps to prevent it from happening?
As an example, my current System Memory readings (from Activity Monitor), with only 'Firefox' and 'Activity Monitor' open, are: Free memory 74.9 MB (but frequently dropping to less than 10 MB) Wired 228.4 MB Active 1.20 GB Inactive. 504.5 MB Used 1.92 GB VM size 31.99 GB Page ins. 292.1 MB Page outs 120.6 MB Swap used 518.7 MB

Please this is not a question about whether you use Safari or Firefox.
What Browser has the smallest memory footprint for use on the MBA?
With limited ram @ 2GB I find either Safari, Firefox, Camino, etc using as much as 200MB +/- in activity monitor. Are there some more obscure browsers that use/need less memory and function just as well or almost as well?
I am working on Macbook Air. I have 4GB RAM and working on an Excel file with a (not so) large dataset. I keep getting "Out of Memory" message.Â

I am not a mac user (please forgive me) but I have a friend who has a Mac and cannot print all of a sudden. From what I understand it is an I-Mac and the OS is OSX.
All of a sudden (after a few years without trouble) she is getting an out of memory message when she sends a job to the printer. Further, no jobs show up in the printer dialogue window when it is sent from the computer. The print jobs are not large, just simple emails. Even when she creates a blank message with the word test in the body it still wont print.
The printer is an HP D4160.
It is not sending any messages re: the status of the cartridges. The computer is communicating with the printer as it will print a test page when commanded to from the computer so this is truly baffling.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I brought a 13" Macbook air late 2013 model in December last year. It has 4GB Ram and a 120GB Storage.I have a 160GB portable hard-drive which I store all my files on (Music, pictures etc) so this leads me to this question. Why do I keep getting the error message "Run out of application memory".That message pops up when I use Chrome (Only program running!!!!!!!!!! other than Finder) even if I have one page open??Â
It's also popped up before when no programs are running and causes the MacBook to freeze up resulting in me having to turn it off via the power button. I have run Disk utility and there appears to be no issues? I Googled the error message and all it brought was up people having problems with the calendar application which I do not use nor is it running?Â

View 8 Replies View Relatedwhat the difference is between the commands 'close window' and 'close all windows'? They seem to me to both have the same effect. In my earlier version of Safari, if I opened a new web page, it just replaced the earlier one, now though the new pages just keep accumulating. T

I want to close down a user account. When I go into Users in System Preferences and chose the account I want to close it starts going through the motions of deleting the account, then, comes up with an error saying I can't delete this account.Â
I have tried many times. I have even removed files so that I have 200GB of disk space etc.Â

2010 iMac running 10.9.4. Lately certain programs are forced to close on a regular basis. This includes Safari, Mail, Crashplan. It usually happens when the computer is sleeping. When I wake up the computer first thing in the morning, I usually have 3 - 4 messages saying that certain programs were forced to restart. This can also sometimes occur when the computer is not sleeping, but when I am using it. Typically it's Safari that is forced to restart. Â
Recently upgraded RAM and added Crashplan software for data backup. Â

Basically, my iMac can't load [URL] on Firefox, Chrome and safari. Â
It first happened when I use the firefox address bar to google something. The web page didn't load and said "The connection was reset: The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.", Then I try it on Chrome to go to google.com. The web page didn't load and said "No Data received: Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data."Â Then I try it on Safari. The web page didn't load and said
"Safari cant open the page [URL] because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again."

I cannot look at any website that has a lot of photos for too long without the mac locking up. I have tried Google chrome with the same results as Safari. I looked on the forums and saw a flush cache command through terminal and tried that with no luck. I don't know if there is anything like the windows task manager to just kill the one app without rebooting.
