Intel Mac :: Constantly Losing WiFi Randomly While Working
Apr 19, 2012
I am running an imac 24-inch Mid 2007 on 10.7.3. Always do the updates and everything seems ok. I have been having problems with connecting, reconnecting after sleep and just losing my connection in the middle of being on wifi. I have replaced my wireless router, I have deleted all previous wifi networks. I have also renewed my dhcp license. Nothing works. To reconnect, I have to continuously go to network preferences, assist me, diagnostics, then continue with the assist me and choose my network and it then reconnects. This is not just waking from sleep. Sometimes just randomly while working on the computer. I have read some things about equipment plugged in and I have an ATT micro cell plugged into 1 ethernet jack in my wireless router/modem, I also have a bluetooth mouse, a printer plugged in USB and a Lacie HD using Time machine.

My iMac (purchased Feb 6) is constantly dropping the wifi signal. It seems to happen randomly...sometimes it's there, sometimes not and I must go to Networking icon and all the steps to reconnect!. (My iPad2 and IPhone are not having this problem...or perhaps their 3G has kept me from noticing.)

My imac constantly drops my wifi connection. Sometimes it'll last 5 minutes, other times less than a minute. And, yet other times, it'll go on for 30 minutes. I've tried deleting the network and the adding it again, reset router, changed channels on the router and countless other solutions with no success. Sometimes, it does not even find my wireless network! My ipad, my wife's macbook pro and my mac air all seem fine on the network and do not drop the signal. What is going on? Could it be my wireless card? Is there any easy way to check if I have a faulty wireless card?

I have a PC laptop which also uses the wireless and has never had a problem. My Mac Pro loses access to the net every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off" / "Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and this works but only for a temporary solution until it drops out a few minutes later.also link to pic here..[URL] It always shows full bars even though in the activity monitor it just flatlines or flutters near 0kB/sec. Like many others, my connection drops although the wireless signal icon remains full. I've noticed that as long as my system doesn't idle (ie - if I'm downloading something, or on a webpage which is always sending or recieving data) the wireless connection seems alright. But if I am on a webpage (for instance, this Apple website which is idle and not sending or recieving data) for a few minutes or am away from the computer for 5 minutes, the connectivity dies and I cant access the net. I then follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off" / "Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and this works but only for a temporary solution until it drops out a few minutes later. Also, can I ask that NO ONE suggest that I hook my computer up via the ethernet cable as there is no access points upstairs and I'm not going to pay a tonne of money to get one installed when I paid a tonne of money for my "AirPort Extreme" so I didnt have to (which was just over 2 years ago).Â
Its been a constant problem for the last 12 months and the short-fix of "Turn AirPort Off" / "Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection has driven me to madness (especially when I write a lot of information into a site for example this, and after 15 minutes I click the next button or send and dont realise the net is no longer connected and I LOOSE EVERYTHING I'VE JUST TYPED. It's happened 1000's of times.

Ive got a 2008 Mac Pro and recently Ive been experiencing some issues with its USB ports. The front usb ports have a USB antenna connected and some time later, it just loses power and I have to disconnect it and connect it in order to make it work again. Besides that, Ive got a USB hub connected in one of the back ports. In it, is my camera and my keyboard. After some time, it just loses power. Not at the same time than the usb antenna, but in less that an hour I have to repeat the process 2-3 times. Worth to note, that in the two back usb ports left, Ive got an external hard drive in each and I dont have problems, there are always seen in the finder.

I've had my iMac 27" i7 since November '09 and have had no real problems with the magic mouse until today. It is constantly losing it's connection taking seconds to sometimes minutes to finally re-connect. It's happening while the mouse is idle or while I'm using it (it happened right after I clicked to start this thread in fact!)

My internet provider says it has a good signal. whether i use wifi or connected straight to the modem its the same, some pages load some dont, always different on what loads and doesnt.  If i connect to a neighbour who has the exact same internet speed and provider it works perfectly fine. Ever since i did a software update 3 or 4 days ago it has been happening.

For some reason, approximately once a month, the Mac loses the wifi settings. This sends the clock back to January 1st and takes several attempts of reentering the network name and password before it is recognised again.
Also, the wifi settings seem to no longer be part of the keychain when that happens.
This is getting to be a pain. Does anyone know why this happens (it only happens on one of the Macs; others are fine)? What can I do to repair it for good?

I have 3 macs working off my wireless router. Two out of three are still working fine, but the third (an iMac G5) keeps losing its network connection and either won't find the network or, if it does, will not allow me to rejoin it, even after entering the relevant key/password. It has been in the same location in my house and has worked fine for the last five years. But oddly, if I move the G5 to within a few feet of the router it starts working again (though sometimes seems unable to find the network, although when it does it will let me join it, hassle free).Â
Have spoken to some Apple guys and, following their advice, have gone into SYSTEM PREFERENCES, NETWORK, LOCATION but having got that far a pop-up appears telling me that an application has changed my network settings. Zapping OK, this dialog box just keeps re-appearing and the only way I can get out of this corner is by 'force quit'. Â

I have two different iMacs: late 2011 and Mid 2010. Both imacs wifi stop working after sleep mode. ***?! Ipod and iphones work properly at is time. I have checked disk utils and fixed permissions. Everything is updated. Maybe there is the way to reenable wifi module without rebooting my computers?
Im very dissapointed apple imacs. Lcd of mid 2010 being changing for the second time. Last time it worked ok for 5 month. ***?! Is it ok for lcd screen? Or maybe I should turn into hackintosh to avoid poor-quality hardware? Rofl. **** I have only apple devices and starting nervous about it.

Since upgrading to Lion I've had the problem with wi fi losing connection and this seems to be common? The Apple support talked me through a change in system config. I'm no expert and not sure if I could repeat if needed. The support desk could not guarantee that this will permanently fix the problem though.

I upgraded my 2009 15" MBP today to 10.7.3 and never had any issues with connectivity or wifi. Suddenly my MacBook Pro drops the wifi every few seconds and can't keep a stable connection. I know there was an issue with the iMac's and this problem but I never had this. Are you telling me in fixing this problem on the iMac, it broke the rest? Â

Updated this morning. Then it would not hold a wifi connection for more than 5 seconds at a time. Had to use Lion Recovery to install a Time Machine backup to 10.7.2. That took over two hours. After that wifi was semi-ok. Lion has always had a problem with wifi. I am very disappointed with how Apple has handled the Lion rollout. wifi think twice before installing this update.

For several weeks I've lost internet connection on my iMac every day or so; the wifi icon changes to show a ! and is otherwise greyed out. My internet connection is via a relatively new Time Capsule (2011) which has an ethernet cable connecting it to my Sky broadband router. I moved to this new Sky broadband router in early Jan 2012 (changing to Sky as a Broadband provider) and it works nicely as a router. My iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and a range of other devices (including an Apple Airport Express connected to a Sky TV HD box to enable it to download movies) have continued to work on the internet without problems.
The IP address of the iMac (27 inch quad core i7, 8 GB RAM, fully up to date on Lion) disappears from the Network settings when the problem arises but the connection of the iMac to the wifi (and backing up to the Time Capsule) still works. I can even use a VNC app on the iPad to connect to the iMac on the same wifi LAN when the IP address has gone and the ! is showing in the wifi icon on the menu bar. To get reconnected to the internet, I just restarted the iMac and it was then back accessing the web nicely. Eventually the iMac would not connect to the internet at all. It would momentarily get an IP address from the router and then lose it again. I then tried taking the iMac to the Apple Store.
Various diagnostics run in store at Genius Bar and during the week and the problem (using the same account) was not replicated. On its return home, it was still not working on the internet. I then tried booting into 'safe mode'. This enabled a stable and reliable connection to the internet! After several days in this mode, I re-installed Lion and booted into normal mode again. The problem returned and has been with the iMac since. However, at least a restart of the iMac gets it straight back on to the internet again. I suspect some sort of corrupted network preference file or the like. But where? The disconnection from the internet can happen any time of day; for example it happened while typing this message but more often than not it happens when the computer is unattended.

My WiFi on Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro is constantly dropping. I went to the Genius Bar about the problem and was told to reinstall OS X, which I did, and now, it just happens more often! The only way to get it to reconnect is to turn the airport on and off. Or, when I select my network, it asks for the password, which it was told to remember.
