Intel Mac :: Can Replace HDD With A SSD
Apr 17, 2012
I just got an ad in my email. I can get a 12GB SSD with up to 559 MB/Sec speed for $155. Can I replace the HD in my iMac with such a drive? I might then get an external enclosure for the original drive.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

This is all very well, but opening the cover to get the batteries out again is a complete nightmare. I sometime resort to just dropping the thing until it falls apart!

mid-2007 Intel-based iMac
optical drive is shot
cant install winxp on bootcamp without it
thought it'd be easier to have a separate (already windows-formatted) drive (pulled from my laptop) and choose to boot to either at startup.

When saving files to my folder on the desktop from the Mac Email, it does not replace same name files. Instead it makes a new file by adding (-1, -2, etc.) at the end of the file. Is there a setting somewhere that makes it so that this does not happen?

I've been on on SSI Disability since 2004, being a 24 year survivor of a anaplastic Oligodendroglioma brain tumor diagnosis in 1988, with a need to replace my old PPC Mac to new hardware and software for compatibility with the newest Apple software, Adobe Design Premium, Acrobat Pro 9, Photoshop Extended and QuarkXPress 9 software. I have a two-monitor configuration with a USB Wacom Stylus pad, separate keyboard and 800 Firewire.
With my disability I have limited funds to upgrade, but have been a loyal Mac user since 1991 when I was permanently laid off as Art Director for a large commercial print shop, because of my medical condition. I then started my own freelancing business as a graphic design concept specialist from that time until the present. I just finished designing a new logo for a new medical research lab at UCSD and Annual Report for Berger Hospital Foundation.I recently had my 3rd craniotomy surgery 02/06/2012 and am recovering well. I thought I'd start asking for help in this forum to see what anyone here, or at Apple

My fan(s) started running at high speed and display was erratic. I diagnosed a thermal issue with the logic board, tried some home troubleshooting, then took it in to the genius bar. Fans checked out fine but logic board (and maybe video card) did not. Repair will be north of $600. Problem is, I love the 24" iMac and don't want the 27" and wouldn't want to go back to the 21". Would it be dumb to fix a 3 year old iMac.

I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod. I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica. Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house. I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip. There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes. When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts? Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply? Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician? My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service? How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook. My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that. Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?

The ivy bridge processors are coming out soon (or may already be out). I have heard that macbook pro 13" models might be able to use the new processers due to their lower energy useage. I presume that I will be able to take my mac to an apple store and have it installed. Is this information true?

I have an early Mac Mini with OSX Server installed. I'd like to pass it on to my son, but want to put the original OS back on the box first. Unfortunately I can't boot from the CD - the machine just spits out the disc when I try to boot from it with the 'C' key held down.
I'm assuming that OSX server is preventing an 'upgrade' to the desktop version?
I can't find the server CD that the machine was originally configured with, so can't use disk utility to erase the system disk.

I have a bit of a problem, I'm in the middle of replacing my dead 80GB hard drive in my beloved PB G4. It has however thrown me a bit of a snag as the bracket that holds in the hard drive has two screws that look like they may be stripped. They're in there pretty doggone good and I'm using a 00 screwdriver with no avail. I'd like to get this drive out and get on with the new drive and replacement...and eventually get on with my life but I can't get the doggone drive out.

I have a Rev. A with broken hinges and since it has a small dent in the righthand side, Apple woun't fix it (I have already had a fierce discussion with Apple regarding this matter, so please no comments about extended warranty ;-)
On eBay it is possible to buy a set of new hinges including the grey piece of plastic that breaks with the hinges. Is it possible to replace the hinges on a Rev. A with these spares?
Would love to keep my Air as second machine beside a iMac 27" or Mac Pro.

I am having some trouble with my Powerbook G4. I am pretty sure my hard drive is failing but want to get some other opinions before I start replacing stuff. Over the last couple days the HDD starting make strange noises (clicking a lot, along with other undescribale noises). I am wanting to hold off buying a MBP until after Leopard is out.
I am wondering a few things:
1. Is my diagnosis of bad HDD right?
2. How easy is it to replace the HDD with a new one (seems pretty easy reading instructions from ifixit.com)
3. Will any 2.5" ATA drive work?
4. I installed OS X on a firewire drive before the internal drive died but now it will not boot. Am I right in assuming once the new drive is in I can pop the Install disk in and install OS X?
5. Am I forgetting anything? Any tips?

Over the last half hour or so, I've heard a couple intermittent click type sounds coming from my Mac Pro, when this happens, the apps I'm accessing start beach balling for maybe 10 seconds or so and then finally go back to normal. It certainly sounds like a hard drive noise, and the fact that it causes my apps to freeze up leads me to believe it's my boot drive (I have the standard 250GB drive that came with the system as my boot drive with all my apps installed, and then I have two 1TB drives in a mirrored RAID for my home directory)
The SMART status on all 3 drives check out fine, so I don't know of a decent way to pinpoint for sure which drive it is, but I want to nip this in the bud. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I can do anything else to check? It's only happened twice so far and it's been a while since the last time it happened, but I don't want to wait until it's too late. Also, what's the best way to replace my boot drive without having to do a reinstall of the OS? I've never had to do this before on a Mac...

I read news that Samsung is already coming out with 256 GB SSD drives. I'm imagining that Apple will start putting those into the Air mid next year, and wonder what are my chances of being able to replace the 128 GB SSD drive (this is assuming I purchase an Air in the next few weeks) myself when the new ones come out? I remember there have been some threads related to swapping drives on this forum in the past, but none dedicated to those new 256 GB SSD drives, as far as I can tell.
