MacBook Air :: Upgrade/Replace G4 Dual MDD PPC To Intel Desktop?

Feb 21, 2012

I've been on on SSI Disability since 2004, being a 24 year survivor of a anaplastic Oligodendroglioma brain tumor diagnosis in 1988, with a need to replace my old PPC Mac to new hardware and software for compatibility with the newest Apple software, Adobe Design Premium, Acrobat Pro 9, Photoshop Extended and QuarkXPress 9 software. I have a two-monitor configuration with a USB Wacom Stylus pad, separate keyboard and 800 Firewire.

With my disability I have limited funds to upgrade, but have been a loyal Mac user since 1991 when I was permanently laid off as Art Director for a large commercial print shop, because of my medical condition. I then started my own freelancing business as a graphic design concept specialist from that time until the present. I just finished designing a new logo for a new medical research lab at UCSD and Annual Report for Berger Hospital Foundation.I recently had my 3rd craniotomy surgery 02/06/2012 and am recovering well. I thought I'd start asking for help in this forum to see what anyone here, or at Apple

The ivy bridge processors are coming out soon (or may already be out). I have heard that macbook pro 13" models might be able to use the new processers due to their lower energy useage. I presume that I will be able to take my mac to an apple store and have it installed. Is this information true?

Hardware :: Put In A Dual 500 Cpu To Replace Internal 450?

Nov 12, 2008

I have a G4 450 AGP in which I am putting in 4- 256 mbs ram chips and looking at possibly more upgrades.

Can I put in a dual 500 cpu to replace the 450 that is in there and would it be a good upgrade? Also what would be a good video upgrade from the factory ATI Rage Pro. Am running a CRT monitor -Sony Trinitron Multiscan 20 seII.

Monitors is one thing that I can't keep straight. I know that a DVI connection is an LCD connection but what do I have a ADC or a VGA connection?

Small plug no adapter.

Am running system 10.4.11.

PowerPC :: Replace Tower G5 Single Core Chip To Dual One?

Jun 23, 2009

Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

MacBook Pro :: Best Way To Upgrade To Dual HD?

Nov 13, 2009

I took the mac plunge this past week and so far I'm loving OS X. I would eventually like to upgrade the stock 250gb to a 640gb, and install the kingston 40gb ssd drive into an optibay as the dedicated boot/app drive. First, for a dual ssd/hdd system, putting the ssd in the optibay is the correct strategy right? What is the best way to attempt this switch?

If I replace both drives at once, I'm screwed because I need the optical drive to install os x, correct? So should I install a OS onto the 640 first, and then install the ssd? I'm also relatively new to time machine, so I'm not sure what its capabilities are--will i be able to only back up my applications? In the end, I'd like to be able to boot from the ssd and store videos/pics/etc in the HD.

Mac Pro :: Upgrade Base Dual 2.4GHz Quad Core To Dual 2.93GHz Hex Core

Oct 3, 2010

I'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:

Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?

Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?

Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?

Mac Pro :: Time To Upgrade Original Dual Core 2x2,66?

Jul 19, 2009

Usually pick up a new mac tower ~4yrs or so and now that im halfway through usually more or less max it to the hilt to last me. Lately havnt had the time focus on trends of who's putting out the most rock solid drives, ram, and what the best setups are...so would appreciate some feedback on my simple upgrade project for the home office...My usage is primarily heavy photography in pshop, lightroom, etc and moderate HD video editing in FCP.

First off think its time finally replace my wrt54g linksys router with one that supports NAS via usb, firewire, or ethernet... Eyeballing the 610n. Goal is to backup my data via time machine over the network now.

So for this effort i'd like to pick up 2 external 1.5tb or 1tb drives here in order to support the time machine backups, suggestions? Currently have a couple seagate 500gb externals in raid 1 via usb directly into my tower for time machine backup purposes and they are low on space. I would most likely raid 1 these as well for redundancy. What's the deal on raid 5 & 10, do the basic osx disc utilities support that yet?

Current spec on the quad core mac pro tower is the stock 250gb drive used only for the OS and apps, plus a couple 500gb seagate drives.Like to pull the 2 internal seagate drives and replace with 4 of the most reliable 1tb or 1.5tb internal drives on the market, seagate & wd have usually treated me right. Like to run raid 0 on each of the 2 pairs internally for speed so id essentially have about ~2 tb of daily workable space. Are the 2tb drives there yet in terms of reliability & value?

Lastly as for ram, risers a & b both are paired with 512 in each slot for 2gb total. Thinking 8gb would probably be sufficient for my purposes. Where are the best ram deals currently for the quality stuff.Budget isnt too much of an issue, prefer to pay few bux more quality instead of crap though im a frugal spender. Figure ~100-200ea for the internal drives, bit more for the externals, ~300 for couple 4gb ram modules,~200 for the router...

PowerPC :: Upgrade Powermac Dual 1ghz QS To Mac Mini?

Dec 13, 2007

Wondering if it makes sense to sell my QS dual 1ghz and get a Mac Mini C2D or upgrade the QS with a faster video card (Ati 9800 pro, about $120 on ebay). The QS already has a fast HD and 1.5gb ram. Looks like either option would be about the same price. I won't need to upgrade either Mac in the future, it will be the home Mac (A new Mac Pro after 1/15 will be my main Mac at work).

2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?

Mac Pro :: Desktop Area Itself Squished In And Not Chopped Off On Dual Monitor

Jan 30, 2009

I have a client with a fairly basic Mac Pro setup. He has the standard ATI 2600 graphics card connected to two 26 inch Samsung LCDs. The main monitor is ok, but the secondary monitor has about one inch of the far right side that does not work. The desktop area itself is squished in, and not chopped off. So far we have replaced the monitor with another, he has about a dozen at his disposal, we have replaced the VGA cable, and we have switched ports on the video card and re arranged the screen locations in system preferences. No matter what configuration we use, the screen on the right has it's image squished and makes many things look distorted.

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue, and what they've done to resolve it. We've contacted Apple care and they originally blamed the monitor, which is why we replaced the screen completely. At some point in the next couple weeks we may have a chance to bring the system to the Apple store, but then we'd need two monitors to demonstrate the problem.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Dual Monitors Desktop Images Load To Left

Jun 27, 2012

Ever since I upgraded to Lion from 10.6.7 a couple of weeks ago and then up to 10.7.4, one desktop picture appears off to the left and a little high. The other picture is a no-show.†I have an 2010 27 iMac with a Dell 30" u3011 as a 2nd display, using an Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. The Dell's on the left set up vertically with the menu bar. The iMac on the right is horizontal.†On startup, the iMac's desktop image aligns to the Dell's left side, runs across the top half of the Dell and ends a little onto the iMac.

The image gets cropped at the top. The Dell's image doesn't appear at all. I'm guessing it is offstage to the left?†Where the iMac's image does not reach is a light gray, something a bit darker the Solid Gray Light.†Everything functions fine: mouse, Finder, apps, but, still, what gives?? No monitor issues before Lion.†The only fix I've found is temporary until the next restart or startup.I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Occasionally, this fix has survived a couple shut downs or restarts.

What I've also tried:†Resetting the PRAM and the unplugging everything for 2 minutes trick. No good. I was using personal .png images. I shifted back to the default galaxy shot. I tried putting the menu bar on the iMac. I tried the other user account which is barebones and seldom used. nope.†Several times, I deleted com.apple.desktop.plistcom.apple.desktop.plist.lockfilecom.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist†Problem recurred right away.†I typed killall Dock in Terminal. This worked to restore the desktop images right away, but the problem recurred on startup.
