can I replace my HDD in my late 2009 iMac myself? The current drive is toast and I've heard that late 2009 Apple started using HDDs with thermal sensors.

So All of a sudden my superdrive wont burn dvd's or cd's. It says open session, and then immediately says close session. I tried using the Toast software and it did the same thing. i think about replacing the drive?

Just checking to see if others have had the same issue with their Super Drive as I have had. In late Dec 2009 I bought a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac which seemed to work great for a few months. Then, every so often, the Super Drive would act up and would not eject a cd/dvd when prompted to do so. At first this really didn't seem to be a major issue, just a minor annoyance to contend with every so often, so I never made a stink about it to Apple. When it did happen, though, I'd eventually have to go through all the usual steps to get the disc media to eject, which sometimes had me turn the computer of then back on again, all the while clicking on my mouse. This really has only happened maybe 10 to 15 times since I've had the computer, which in hindsight seems a lot, but recently, over many attempts to do so, the drive just wouldn't eject a disk. Eventually I got it to to eject, but now it wont except disks, of any kind, at all and it totally unresponsive. Where before it would make a sound as if it was about to mount, it now does absolutely nothing, making no noise and appears completely dead.Â
So… question: is it dead and if so, is it worth it for me to get it fixed or, maybe, instead buy an external cd/dvd drive that I can just hook up to one of my open USB ports? If so, what might be the best external drive to get?Â

how to use the super-drive?Â
I received a new late 2013 iMac with 27" Monitor, track pad and super-drive. My problem is with learning to use the super drive. Â
It shows on my monitor and I rename the disc (i.e. Backup 1). I drag the files to the disc folder. Then I eject the disc. When I re-insert the disk it shows blank disk. However the original renamed folder still shows on the monitor with the files and they can be moved to other folders.Â

I really dont know what the REAL defect of my macbook pro,it has always the same problem : NO POWER!, My unit shuts down automatically and doesn't turn on. The MagSafe's led blinks to red and green whenever i connect it to my MacBook pro . I brought it to a service center here in the Philippines for 3 times to be exact, the first time i brought it they said that the battery was just drained the same as the 2nd time. . And for the 3rd time they figured out that the logic board is the problem so they did replace it. When I received the unit, for only 8 hours my MacBook pro shuts down again, given that it is connected to MagSafe. I just bought it last October, and it is still under warranty..

My CPU fan seems to be running fast a lot on my late 2009 IMac. When I wake my system up in the morning the CPU fan is running at 939rpm. After 20 minutes of surfing I can hear it and it is at 2456rpm. All of the internal temps are around the same.Â

So my macbook is just a few days old, but i think i found something weird with the dvd drive. Its my first mac, so i dont know about this. But is it common that i have to push the whole dvd/cd inside the drive before it know its a dvd/cd there, its just a tiny bit of cd/dvd to spot before it takes it and sucks it inside. I thought, when over the half of the cd/dvd in, it sucks the cd/dvd inside automaticly. Seems weird i have to push it all inside before something happens. Is this normal? Also it makes alot of noise at the start, when it sucks it in

I bought a displayport to minidisplay port cable and connected to my iMac 27; nothing is happening. My laptop says no displays detected and the iMac does nothing when i press command-F2...i've also tried command-F2-Fn. It doesnt even seem to respond to command-F2. Also under the keyboard shortcuts menu there are only two shortcuts for displays and its to dim and brigthen the display. The iMac and PC are both up to date with software; OSx 10.7.4 Lion.

My fan(s) started running at high speed and display was erratic. I diagnosed a thermal issue with the logic board, tried some home troubleshooting, then took it in to the genius bar. Fans checked out fine but logic board (and maybe video card) did not. Repair will be north of $600. Problem is, I love the 24" iMac and don't want the 27" and wouldn't want to go back to the 21". Would it be dumb to fix a 3 year old iMac.

Just got done loading 8gb of ram and my OCZ vertex 2 ssd 40gb. Load Time of apps is amazing. My one question is boot time went from 48 seconds to 33. Should I be getting better. I used carbon copy to clone drve and I'm only using 14 gb of the 40 that's there. I domhave to say these setup screams at certain jobs.

My iMac stopped booting. The fans and hard-drive spin up but the screen stays black and I can hear that the hard drive isn't been read after the initial spin up.Â
I decided to open it up to take a look at the diagnostic LEDs to see if it might help me diagnose the problem (the most obvious failure is the logic board). I can't find the LEDs anywhere, where are they? Does my iMac even have diagnostic LEDs?Â
The other possibility is that I can't find the lights because they aren't lighting up. The fans, the hard drive and the CD drive all spin up fine so at least I know that there is some power running though it.

I've got an iMac 27" late 2009 with these: Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3Â Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB and I would like to upgrade my "ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB" to something higher with 2 GB. My question is: is it possible? Like taking off the screen and display and replacing the old video card with a new one without any issues?

I have a iMac (iMac7,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz that is 5 years old. The MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875 (DB09) Superdrive has been replaced once already. It is malfucntioning again. I was wondering if there were any troubleshooting steps I could take that I am unaware of before I replace the drive. Â
It seems to be a mechanical issue. The drive attempts to eject a disk - it sound like the disk is ejecting, yet it cannot. It keeps attempting to eject the disk over and over again. It has happened with a number of different disks, often after some time the disk will eventually eject. This time this one seems to be stuck for good. [URL]

View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook pro (late 2009) and I'm trying to connect it to a fairly new Samsung LED tv. Ive tried to connect it to the tv with audio with two cables: a minidisplayport/hdmi cable and the audio jack/RCA cable. The video works just fine, but the audio is not working. The computer doesn't even recognize the tv as an audio output device. I found out that only macbook pro's made after late 2010 support audio through the HMDI cable so i was trying to find a cable that will support audio on my 2009 macbook pro.

Last Friday, my half charged Macbook Pro randomly turned off and was unresponsive. No sleep/power indicator light, no start up chime, nothing. The only thing that works is the battery indicator light. I have tried a PRAM reset, SMC reset, everything suggested on this website and in the manual. I'm wondering what I'm looking at replacing here, and what the cost could be.
