Hardware :: Wants To Replace?

May 27, 2008

I have a bit of a problem, I'm in the middle of replacing my dead 80GB hard drive in my beloved PB G4. It has however thrown me a bit of a snag as the bracket that holds in the hard drive has two screws that look like they may be stripped. They're in there pretty doggone good and I'm using a 00 screwdriver with no avail. I'd like to get this drive out and get on with the new drive and replacement...and eventually get on with my life but I can't get the doggone drive out.

OS X :: How Do I Replace Server

Sep 29, 2009

I have an early Mac Mini with OSX Server installed. I'd like to pass it on to my son, but want to put the original OS back on the box first. Unfortunately I can't boot from the CD - the machine just spits out the disc when I try to boot from it with the 'C' key held down.

I'm assuming that OSX server is preventing an 'upgrade' to the desktop version?

I can't find the server CD that the machine was originally configured with, so can't use disk utility to erase the system disk.

MacBook Air :: Replace Hinges On Rev. A?

Nov 4, 2010

I have a Rev. A with broken hinges and since it has a small dent in the righthand side, Apple woun't fix it (I have already had a fierce discussion with Apple regarding this matter, so please no comments about extended warranty ;-)

On eBay it is possible to buy a set of new hinges including the grey piece of plastic that breaks with the hinges. Is it possible to replace the hinges on a Rev. A with these spares?

Would love to keep my Air as second machine beside a iMac 27" or Mac Pro.

PowerPC :: How Easy Is It To Replace HDD With New One?

Jun 17, 2007

I am having some trouble with my Powerbook G4. I am pretty sure my hard drive is failing but want to get some other opinions before I start replacing stuff. Over the last couple days the HDD starting make strange noises (clicking a lot, along with other undescribale noises). I am wanting to hold off buying a MBP until after Leopard is out.

I am wondering a few things:
1. Is my diagnosis of bad HDD right?
2. How easy is it to replace the HDD with a new one (seems pretty easy reading instructions from ifixit.com)
3. Will any 2.5" ATA drive work?
4. I installed OS X on a firewire drive before the internal drive died but now it will not boot. Am I right in assuming once the new drive is in I can pop the Install disk in and install OS X?
5. Am I forgetting anything? Any tips?

Mac Pro :: Best Way To Replace Boot Drive?

Aug 21, 2008

Over the last half hour or so, I've heard a couple intermittent click type sounds coming from my Mac Pro, when this happens, the apps I'm accessing start beach balling for maybe 10 seconds or so and then finally go back to normal. It certainly sounds like a hard drive noise, and the fact that it causes my apps to freeze up leads me to believe it's my boot drive (I have the standard 250GB drive that came with the system as my boot drive with all my apps installed, and then I have two 1TB drives in a mirrored RAID for my home directory)

The SMART status on all 3 drives check out fine, so I don't know of a decent way to pinpoint for sure which drive it is, but I want to nip this in the bud. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I can do anything else to check? It's only happened twice so far and it's been a while since the last time it happened, but I don't want to wait until it's too late. Also, what's the best way to replace my boot drive without having to do a reinstall of the OS? I've never had to do this before on a Mac...

MacBook Air :: Will It Be To Replace SSD Drive To 256 GB

Nov 16, 2008

I read news that Samsung is already coming out with 256 GB SSD drives. I'm imagining that Apple will start putting those into the Air mid next year, and wonder what are my chances of being able to replace the 128 GB SSD drive (this is assuming I purchase an Air in the next few weeks) myself when the new ones come out? I remember there have been some threads related to swapping drives on this forum in the past, but none dedicated to those new 256 GB SSD drives, as far as I can tell.

MacBook :: Can Replace Keyboard On The Old 1.83 CD

Feb 6, 2009

my local Apple store replaced the horrendous chipping keyboard on my original Apple refurbed 1.83 GHz Core Duo Whitebook. It feels a lot better now but I can't help but wonder how long it'll be before this new keyboard starts chipping away too, especially considering the well documented issues with the plastic Macbooks.Just as a point of information, my Whitebook is maxed out at 2GB RAM with the stock 60GB HDD and combo drive. My wife and I use this laptop pretty much daily for HOME use: typically for surfing, email, iWork stuff and Parallels/XP stuff. Outside of that, we don't do anything really CPU intensive on it - although the fans will kick in if I have too many Safari windows open, watching a video or doing something in Parallels. I do have Logic, Garageband '09 and Ableton Live installed and intended to do music on it, but I really never use them on the Macbook because the 13" screen seems a bit too small to effectively do anything with them IMO.

Mac Pro :: EVGA 8800gt Has Gone Bad, Wants To Replace

Sep 15, 2009

After about a year and a half, my EVGA 8800gt has gone bad, screen corruption, and eventual freezes, etc. and no problems with the original 7300gt in the machine. The part number on it is 512-P3-N801-AR, and it was used in a launch (1,1) mac pro.

Not a problem, the card has a lifetime warranty, my only concern is if I get a different card back from them. I have in the past, and just recently had a friend, perform a exchange with EVGA and had them send back a different card than was sent (it's always been a better card so no complaints at the time), but of course that would be an issue with the EFI32 firmware, etc. So if they end up being unable to send me another 8800gt which ones would be ok? I've read a bit about 9800gts flashed with the 8800 software working, etc.

MacBook Pro :: How To Replace SSDs?

Apr 17, 2010

I mentioned to someone that I was thinking of buying the optional 128 or 256SSD on the MBP I intend to buy, and perhaps in a couple of years buying an SSD of greater capacity. (The 512 is beyond my budget at present.)

The person I spoke to didn't think this was a good idea because the 128 and even the 256 would soon fill up with photos, and that I would then want a larger drive.

(Backing up an external drive is of course highly recommended, but it's pretty neat to have all one's photo collection on the computer's own drive.)

Replacing an SSD with another, he said, was a "dickens of a job" as the existing (factory) SSD is built into the mother board.

Is There An App To Replace Itunes On Iphone

Feb 26, 2012

The new itunes10 app appeared on my iphone -- purple instead of blue-- and now it only displays songs purchased in the itunes store.Anything I have ripped from my purchased cd's do not show up in the app. Basically my iphone is now just a phone. I use it mostly for music so this is really getting annoying. No notice of this change. After many hours of trying many different things I'm really just looking to kill the itunes app. There must be another app out there to take your music from your mac and transfer to your iphone to listen to it?I already know I'm moving to an android this fall as I'm so tired of this problem child of a phone.
