I don't know why I'm having issues replacing and updating an app on my admin account. I tried replacing an app and I get this error message about permissions when I set full read and write permissions on my account which is an admin account.
let's say i have two folders named the same thing, and i want to merge their contents together, but not replace. if i try to merge these folders together in mac os X, it asks if i want to replace the entire contents, vs. windows, which will merge the contents of the folders, replacing duplicate files if they exist in the destination folder, but otherwise the contents of the destination folder remain unchanged. any way to make os X behave like windows in this particular case?
When saving files to my folder on the desktop from the Mac Email, it does not replace same name files. Instead it makes a new file by adding (-1, -2, etc.) at the end of the file. Is there a setting somewhere that makes it so that this does not happen?
I'm tired of having to jump thru hoops to replace files in my Utilities folder with updated versions. First I have to move the old file to the trash, but I have to enter my password. Then I copy the new file to the Utilities folder but, again, I have to enter my password. Much less user friendly than older versions of Mac OSX (and even Classic). I'm guessing it has to do with security, though I can replace files in the Applications folder without so much effort.I'm guessing the permissions of the Utilities folder have to be changed but changed to what? I want to be able to simply drag an updated application file to the Utilities folder and replace the old one without so much effort.
Long story short, I've been trying to move my entire iTunes from a NAS to my Mac and it's got messy and I'm left with a situation whereby all the songs are safe on the Mac in the correct folders, e.g. Bruce Springsteen songs in the correct album folder in the Bruce Springsteen parent folder, HOWEVER, when I try to play certain songs (not all) on iTunes it skips over the track and doesn't even highlight it with an "!". When I check the file path it will show iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Madonna (for Bruce Springsteen).
So, my question is, how can I now re-associate the songs paths in iTunes app with the correct folders? Is there a script or can I somehow reimport the songs? I'm not worried about losing ratings, last played, play count, etc. but I wouldn't want to lose my playlists.
I'm a really recent switcher, with a long history with PCs. So far, the experiences have been great, but tonight, my PC history became a liability. I'm pretty handy with a Windows-based, so I know my way around the system quite well. But I was working on my Mac tonight. Having made my G4 PM my server, I was starting to move a folder from one drive to another, when decided that I wanted to reconsider where I was putting the folder. The process cancelled successfully and I had about 1 MB at the destination, and 50 GB still left on the source.
Having canceled it, I wanted to remerge my folder back to the original folder. Simple, right? I dragged the smaller folder onto the 50 GB folder, and OS X prompted me to replace. There is a similar dialog on Windows - in fact, it is titled "Confirm Folder Replace" - that merges the folders together. I didn't think twice about it all and clicked yes... And OS X promptly deleted my 50 GB folder and left the 1 MB folder in its place. My bad. Having said that, what's the best way to recover my 50 GB worth of information? I haven't mucked with the machine so much, so I'm not afraid that the data's being overwritten. But how the heck do I get back to it?
For some reason, now a few weeks after installing Snow Leopard, when I open Stickies it tells me I have an older version (6.0) that is not compatible. Is there anywhere I can download the .app and replace it in my Applications folder? Can I find that on the SL disc, or will I have to do some sort of reinstall?
When i want to delete hide folder from usb, it says "The folder “trashes” can’t be moved into one of its subfolders".. What does it mean and how can i delete it??
Ok. I was bored one day and was looking for ways to tweak my dock and i found this: [URL]
I followed the steps under "Restyle Dock Background" Unfortunately... i tried to get the 'invisible dock'. It unfortunately worked.... i hate it and want to change it back....since i replaced the files...i don't know what to do.
So now i have this weird dock and do not know how to replace it.
I have a powermac g5 2.0 dual, and I was wondering if I could replace it with a 2.5ghz cpu? Could I just swap the processor chips, or would i need the entire processor? I know the 2.5s were liquid cooled.
I have an early Mac Mini with OSX Server installed. I'd like to pass it on to my son, but want to put the original OS back on the box first. Unfortunately I can't boot from the CD - the machine just spits out the disc when I try to boot from it with the 'C' key held down.
I'm assuming that OSX server is preventing an 'upgrade' to the desktop version?
I can't find the server CD that the machine was originally configured with, so can't use disk utility to erase the system disk.
I have a bit of a problem, I'm in the middle of replacing my dead 80GB hard drive in my beloved PB G4. It has however thrown me a bit of a snag as the bracket that holds in the hard drive has two screws that look like they may be stripped. They're in there pretty doggone good and I'm using a 00 screwdriver with no avail. I'd like to get this drive out and get on with the new drive and replacement...and eventually get on with my life but I can't get the doggone drive out.
The hard drive on my Macbook 4,1 is way too slow for me now. I want to replace a SSD III or II onto my Macbook. Does SSD III or II work on Macbook 4,1 White Early '08?
I just got an ad in my email. I can get a 12GB SSD with up to 559 MB/Sec speed for $155. Can I replace the HD in my iMac with such a drive? I might then get an external enclosure for the original drive.
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I have a MacBook with OS X 10.4. My parents got a computer about 3 years ago that has OS X 10.5. I was looking through the software discs, and saw a couple for the installation of the 10.5. Now... my question is this: Would it be at all possible for me to install those discs for OS 10.5 on my MacBook?
I recently replaced the 4GB with 8GB of ram in my 2010 MacBook Pro. However, the system only recognizes 4GB installed. Went back into the computer and now the top memory card is stuck and would not release to come out. What can I do to fix this problem?
I seem to have lost Disc 2, and need to download x11 in a big way. I run Tiger 10.4 (PPC) on my mini, so I can't download X11 from the web. How do I go about getting another copy of Disc 2?
I got the i7 MacBook Pro and want to replace the stock HD with SSD. I am thinking whether to wait for thanks giving time for a better deal on SSD or go ahead and bite the bullet.
I have a Rev. A with broken hinges and since it has a small dent in the righthand side, Apple woun't fix it (I have already had a fierce discussion with Apple regarding this matter, so please no comments about extended warranty ;-)
On eBay it is possible to buy a set of new hinges including the grey piece of plastic that breaks with the hinges. Is it possible to replace the hinges on a Rev. A with these spares?
Would love to keep my Air as second machine beside a iMac 27" or Mac Pro.
I am having some trouble with my Powerbook G4. I am pretty sure my hard drive is failing but want to get some other opinions before I start replacing stuff. Over the last couple days the HDD starting make strange noises (clicking a lot, along with other undescribale noises). I am wanting to hold off buying a MBP until after Leopard is out.
I am wondering a few things: 1. Is my diagnosis of bad HDD right? 2. How easy is it to replace the HDD with a new one (seems pretty easy reading instructions from ifixit.com) 3. Will any 2.5" ATA drive work? 4. I installed OS X on a firewire drive before the internal drive died but now it will not boot. Am I right in assuming once the new drive is in I can pop the Install disk in and install OS X? 5. Am I forgetting anything? Any tips?
Over the last half hour or so, I've heard a couple intermittent click type sounds coming from my Mac Pro, when this happens, the apps I'm accessing start beach balling for maybe 10 seconds or so and then finally go back to normal. It certainly sounds like a hard drive noise, and the fact that it causes my apps to freeze up leads me to believe it's my boot drive (I have the standard 250GB drive that came with the system as my boot drive with all my apps installed, and then I have two 1TB drives in a mirrored RAID for my home directory)
The SMART status on all 3 drives check out fine, so I don't know of a decent way to pinpoint for sure which drive it is, but I want to nip this in the bud. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I can do anything else to check? It's only happened twice so far and it's been a while since the last time it happened, but I don't want to wait until it's too late. Also, what's the best way to replace my boot drive without having to do a reinstall of the OS? I've never had to do this before on a Mac...
I read news that Samsung is already coming out with 256 GB SSD drives. I'm imagining that Apple will start putting those into the Air mid next year, and wonder what are my chances of being able to replace the 128 GB SSD drive (this is assuming I purchase an Air in the next few weeks) myself when the new ones come out? I remember there have been some threads related to swapping drives on this forum in the past, but none dedicated to those new 256 GB SSD drives, as far as I can tell.
I recently broke my Macbook's LCD. For some odd reason I followed guide to opening the top case first before I replaced the LCD. Well I've managed to put everything back together besides two things. I can't get the microphone cable . or the inverter cable, back into the logic board. Do I have to use a special computer glue to get them back attached?
my local Apple store replaced the horrendous chipping keyboard on my original Apple refurbed 1.83 GHz Core Duo Whitebook. It feels a lot better now but I can't help but wonder how long it'll be before this new keyboard starts chipping away too, especially considering the well documented issues with the plastic Macbooks.Just as a point of information, my Whitebook is maxed out at 2GB RAM with the stock 60GB HDD and combo drive. My wife and I use this laptop pretty much daily for HOME use: typically for surfing, email, iWork stuff and Parallels/XP stuff. Outside of that, we don't do anything really CPU intensive on it - although the fans will kick in if I have too many Safari windows open, watching a video or doing something in Parallels. I do have Logic, Garageband '09 and Ableton Live installed and intended to do music on it, but I really never use them on the Macbook because the 13" screen seems a bit too small to effectively do anything with them IMO.
I'm tired of seeing websites in Arial, and I never use Arial anyway ... How do I replace Arial with Helvetica? So far I've completely deleted Arial from both /Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts, but it still shows up in Safari and it still is an option in programs like Text Edit.
