OS X :: Time Machine Fail To Start?
Aug 13, 2009It does not start the backup process when scheduled time passed.
symptoms:
1.Example: TM says Next Backup: Today, 10:21 AM, the backup did not start, the time changed to the next bacup schedule time 11:20. No other message. When I look at the log, there are no activity at all.
2. I can request a backup "Backup Now", it backs up normaly. It updates the time for the next schedule backup.
3. For some unknow reason the TM may do a backup and schedule the next backup, but when the time due for the next backup, it will not start the job, it just reschedule the next back up time.
4. The TM disk icon will not stay as the blue time machine icon. It switch to the regular yellow disk icon.
OS X :: Start Time Machine From Scratch?
Sep 26, 2009Over the past week i have been having big problems with my Time Machine backup drive. My backup drive is an Iomega Helium 500GB partioned as HFS+ Journaled.
I usually backup every two days so i plugged into my macbook pro on wednesday night. I left it for about 15 minutes and came back expecting the backup to be done. Instead I found it was deleting old backups? I thought this was odd as the drive had 150 or so GB free and i only had a few for songs and documents since my last backup on monday. After another 15 minutes i returned to find it was backing up 120GB! I had no idea where it had come up with that insane amount of data. so i checked my mac's hard drive space to find i had 236GB free just like it has been around that for a few weeks. I let it back up and unplugged it later that night. I forgot to backup on friday so i plugged it in this morning. It was deleting old backups again and backing up a further 140GB!
I have now come to the conclusion that i should wipe the drive and start again.
How can I do this?

Sep 18, 2010My Time Machine will not start at all (for restoring). No errors in the Console. I tried reinstalled it with Pacifist. I repaired the permissions. I tried delete all prefs (as I don't know the exact plist for this app.) and caches.
It's working when I log in to another account.
OS X :: Time Machine Crashed Computer Now It Won't Start Up?
Feb 21, 2009My roommate just lost his data, so I realized I needed to back up. I plugged in an external hard drive (it was an internal that we put into casing bought from OWC, if that matters). I wasn't thinking about Time Machine but it displayed a message, so I said yes, backup onto the hard drive. Then while it was backing up I was just reading a document, the machine crashed. I swiveled my desk to get something and this caused the external hard drive to fall, for a second it was dangling from the USB. (I'm not sure if that's relevant but.)
I first restart (held down the power button), since nothing was happening. At that point the hard drive was making a weird rhythmic clicking sound. Then it wouldn't start up! I tried this twice. Blank gray screen. I reset the PRAM (was that a bad idea?) and when it started again, I get a folder icon with a blinking question mark, over a gray background. Then I freaked out because this was what happened to my roommate, so I haven't touched the computer since.
What could have gone wrong? What to do now? (Local help centers only open on Monday..) Is it worth it to take a train for an hour to go to an apple store right now?

Mar 2, 2008I keep my time machine HD unplugged from my laptop to reduce the clutter, when i plug it in, time machine starts automatically backing up. It says "Preparing Backup..." and it stays like that for a while. I've had it like that for about 15 minutes.

Jul 2, 2012I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

Aug 28, 2009I couldn't wait any longer. I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I decided to test it out today. The following is a short video clip of the X25-M in action under Snow Leopard (on my late 2008 uMBP 2.53 GHz, 4 GB RAM).
It's not much of a benchmark. I simply selected everything in the Applications folder and hit open to start all the programs at the same time.
Needless to say, I am happy with the results!

I have deleted old backups, excluded unnecessary files, and cleaned out folders. It says 157.46GB available of 159.7GB; but when it backs up it says it requires 188.30GB but only 157.46GB are available. Â

Jun 12, 2012I am non-technical! Following many months of successful automatic back-ups to an external hard disc I find that Time Machine had failed to back-up data since October 2011 for no apparent reason that I am aware. The last file name on the backup hard disc had a file name of the date and time with a suffix '.inprogress' (though the little symbol in the top right corner of the screen did not indicate activity). I dragged and dropped this file in Trash and went through the 'Repair' process for the back-up disc though this process did not indicate that there was a fault with the backup disc. Then restarted the iMac and clicked on Start Backup Now. The process started as normal but after a few moments I got the message 'The Backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disc'. Again a '.inprogress' file was created on the backup hard drive. The backup hard disc is under 10% used.

Jul 2, 2012I wanted a clean install of Lion, so I copied over my iTunes library, saved my Mail as an mbox file, and moved all of my critical files to an external drive. But I completely forgot to save my iPhoto library. I have been running Time Machine for almost a year and I see that I have the file still on my NAS but it says I don't have the permissions to open it up. I can only open Time Machine backups since I reinstalled Lion. I have kept the same machine name and, I believe, username. It did not create a different Time Machine backup--there are still the same three files for the three different computers I am running Time Machine on. Is there any way I can restore my iPhoto library from the old Time Machine backup?Â

However, Time Machine started taking up 600GB of spaceon the External drive! I was like "What the heck!?" So I put unwanted Time Machine Backups in the trash and emptied it. Nothing, they're stuck there now.Â
I'm planning on wiping the disk clean and starting over, but for future reference is there a proper way to delete Time Machine Backups? Surely there must be; (I mean, who would have known Time Machine would take up MORE SPACE than the drive it's backing up in the first place?

Mar 21, 2012Something went wrong on my mac last week. I noticed that backup couldn't complete so I restarted. Then I could no longer login to my main account (admin), but could login to my daughter and wife's managed account and could create a new admin account. I assumed this was a key chain issue so gave up trying to access and decided to restore from time machine. 2 restores (72 hrs each) and the mac will not boot after the restore. I have the ever spinning pin wheel for 24 hrs already. What can I do to get all my docs back? I don't think it's a hard drive issue (1.5TB) installed almost 6 mths ago.

Mar 31, 2012When I got there I realized that she was also running windows. I went into the Mac and didn't touch windows. I connected the external hard drive although it was not working so I turned on time machine and tried to use this although didn't have time to set up time capsule so I just cancelled it and shut it. She turned her Mac on this morning and said that windows had completely disappeared! She took it to her local computer store, not an apple store, and was told that because time machine had been turned on and off that windows and the hard drive associated with it had all been wiped!!
