Jun 18, 2012I logged in to my Mac a couple of days ago and it said it was restore to some weird date. It does not appear anything changed, but now when I am trying to download a Sims game (don't judge me lol) it won't download saying there is no Internet connection even though there is. Is there anyone to restore the system to a date that I know it was working properly without using time machine? I never bought an external drive so my time machine is not set up.

Jun 19, 2009How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.

Apr 25, 2012Time Machine no longer works for me. Apparently the volume of stuff it wants to back up is too large for the partition devoted to it (on an external hard drive). But I can't choose the exclude anything because the Options button in Time Machine Prefs is greyed out. I've deleted the TimeMachine .plist file, and restarted, but no go. And I haven't found anything to help either here or on the larger web

OS X Yosemite :: Can't Select Files To Exclude In Time Machine
Dec 4, 2014I have recently upgraded to 10.10 (fresh install and only migrated network settings and documents). I was setting up my Time Machine and choosing which folders to exclude from the backup when suddenly when I clicked on the plus button to add another directory the finder window shows all the folders as greyed out and unable to be selected. This applies to ALL files on the hard drive. Screen shot attached. I have performed a repair permissions and still a problem. Also performed a repair on the disk to and no change. Needless to say I have performed a reboot as well.

Dec 10, 2010I've had time machine running for about 10 months. Today I needed to rely on it for the first time to restore a MySQL database I deleted by accident. To my horror the last backup in Time Machine was six months out of date even though I work on this database every day! I've completely lost faith in it and I'm feeling really let down. Is this a common problem? Have I got a setting wrong or is Time Machine just a complete waste of time?

Sep 1, 2014I have a 21" iMac and a Mac Mini, both of which I upgraded to Maverick a week ago. Since then, I have not been able to get Time Machine to backup. I can connect to the disk through my network, but Time Machine does not recognize it exists. I have gone through User and Groups, I have checked everything I can think of through System Preferences, and nothing has worked, including Sharing. I have another computer and am able to backup it, after programming the mini.

Nov 30, 2008So I'm in the process of fixing up an old Power Mac Dual G4 MDD for my Dad. I'm installing all the software he'll use, setting all the pref panes, etc... I've turned on Time Machine, and when I give him the computer for Xmas I'd like for there to not be remnants of this setting up process. Right before I shut off the computer for the last time before giving it to him, how would I delete all of the old backups and just leave the "current" backup?

I know I wouldn't want to take an Windows image of a hard drive from a dell laptop and restore it to an Hp desktop or any mis-matching like that due to hardware and driver differences. But I was wondering if it is OK to use my time machine backups of my Macbook Air and restore that to an iMac that is on its way. I am actually selling the Macbook Air once I have the iMac set up and running smooth. I could easily copy my documents, pictures, etc. And I could export my bookmarks and settings with Firefox, but I would prefer to not have reinstall all the apps I have, all the plugins in Firefox, and all the settings I have the way I like in OS X.
So I am looking for advice on the best method for migration to a different computer. Is Time Machine my best bet?

Jun 17, 2012I just finished using time machine to recover my iMac after putting in a new HD. Everything worked perfectly but now the contents of the time machine appear to be gone from before the install date. This is kind of concerning since one never knows whats missing until it's needed.

Tried to delete preferences for system ... Every time I try to uncheck the box marked or open the Date and Time preferences, it freezes and have to force quit.

May 24, 2009i've got a niggling problem that i'd like to get sorted. I've searched the forums, but can't find anything that relates exactly to my problem.
I restored my pro from a time machine machine backup and now it displays the time incorrectly (-1hr). 'Set date & time automatically' is checked in system prefs which makes the problem even weirder. I'm using the Apple Europe sever too.
I've read somewhere about deleting a hidden file to solve the problem, but there isn't enough information to execute.

Sep 30, 2008So I shut down my computer earlier today for the first time in weeks. I restarted it and then left for a few hours for dinner.
I come home and I look at the last time MobileMe Sync and Time Machine did their things. They say they did them at 7:45. I look at the clock on my cable box and on my iPhone, both say 6:45.
Weird that the MacBook's time is wrong. I go into Time Date settings. I see that when the MacBook does the "Auto locate where you are so that we can set the appropriate time zone, etc. the MacBook things I'm in Rexford, Idaho.
I haven't been to Idaho in about 25 years, and my MacBook has been sitting in Southern Kalifornia for the last one year since I bought it.I've tried to have the MacBook auto-locate again, and it keeps finding me us in Rexford, idaho.

May 8, 2009I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a G4 iBook. Somehow my Time & Date files got corrupted which prevented me from getting on to the internet. When I discovered the problem, I threw them away, thinking a restart would create them again. I was wrong.
Now my computer doesn't know what time or year it is, causing various problems. I don't have back-up 10.5 disks to extract the time & date package.Can I download a replacement anywhere?
Or can someone email the files to me? I don't know what they're called but, if you search time and date, there are only two (and please tell me what folders they're in too)

Sep 20, 2009Starting yesterday, I cannot load Time & Date (either from System Prefs or from the menu bar). I get the beachball and I have to Force Quit System Prefs.
I tried Repairing Permissions and rebooting but it didn't help.I tried deleting .plist entries (as per a related thread on the Internet) and rebooting and that didn't work either.I tried logging off and logging in with another account and the problem is still there.I hope I can get some help because it's driving me nuts. I travel a lot and need to change my time zone. If you need a crash report from me, please tell me how to get it from Console bc I don't know where to look for it!
P.S. I am using old OSX 10.4.11

Jan 11, 2009just signed up for the forum today and plan on stopping by often.... but I have a question.
Recently my 15" MBP has been very sluggish, especially when it comes to browsing the web. I can scroll with my mouse wheel, and wait a few seconds, then I see it actually scroll. Flash video lags and drop frames, etc. Same type of stuff outside of the browser as well, just feeling slow.
So I've got my awesome Drobo (with 2 1TB drives I might add) as my Time Machine backup, and my question is that if I just do an erase and install of OSX, and restore my computer from my previous TM state, won't that just restore all the problems I had?
Would it be worth just starting over for real and install all my software, import my music, etc. manually, or should I trust Time Machine?

Feb 17, 2009So I upgraded my hard drive to 500gb and thought that the easiest way to transfer would be a fresh install and let time machine do it's magic. Well it kind of worked. Everything went smoothly until I tried to load itunes. itl database is from a previous version. Hmm... I thought Time Machine was supposed to back up EVERYTHING so I don't have to go reinstalling s*&^ again. Nevermind, update in Software Update and everything should be grand right? Wrong (arnie voice)
There were loads of updates still in there and 10.5.6 was a biggie. So install that one first. It hangs, I try again, it hangs on install. So approached it from another angle. Use Carbon Copy Cloner. So out with the new drive and in with the old drive. Begin Clone, it failed at 33%. Stuff that. Use something else. Super Duper. It copied superbly, althought it took ages. And then I could even boot use using the clone as the startup disk. So cloned the drive to the new 500gb disk. Took 8 hours...
And eventually.... it loads to the apple logo and then reboots after abotu 60 seconds. Infinite reboot loop.
So am I doomed to using the 160gb drive forever?!

Backed up the MB on an external using Time Machine. Erased the HD and performed a new, fresh install of Leopard. I'm now attempting to restore all the files I previously backed up, but when I click on a file or folder to restore I'm not actually given the "restore" option in Time Machine.

Dec 29, 2009I think my iMac disk may be a bit defragmented after three years of use including large video files. I did a test by installing a new copy of OS on external drive, and it was noticeably faster.
This makes me want to try reinstalling Snow Leopard as a clean install.
Can I then just use Time Machine to bring back everything *exactly* as it was? Will it do that? Emails and everything will be exactly as before?

It keeps searching for the disk in migration assistant.

My computer won't boot, and I'm going to initialize the drive and install Snow Leopard. My question is, what is the best way to restore all of my applications, data and preferences?
Will I be able to just do a complete system restore using Time Machine from the Snow Leopard disc, after I do a clean install of 10.6?
