IMac (Intel) :: Thunderbolt To Firewire 800 Adaptor - Connection Dropping

Aug 29, 2014

I have a new iMac purchased in Q1 2014 and connect my G-Grive to it via an Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter. My iMac runs 24x7 and this FireWire 800 hard drive connection drops out on a regular basis - I'd say maybe once every week or so leading to a dismounted drive and an unavailable iTunes library. I have a slightly newer USB3 G-Drive which is connected by the USB socket next to the TB socket on my iMac. This one doesn't drop out/dismount. I cannot tell if it is a software issue or a physical (cable movement issue), the plug has never been out and I can't deliberately disconnect it at will by wobbling the cable/plug.

So, evidence and experimentation suggests the physical connection is not the issue. This problem has only come about after switching from a physical FW800 connection (my old iMac) to working via a TB adaptor (my new iMac). I'd rather not replace with more USB3 G-Drives (lack of free ports) and I'm not sure if I want to invest in a TB drive if the connections cannot be relied upon. I've seen lots of complaints of TB-FW800 connections dropping on MacBooks but did not see a specific solution. .

Intel Mac :: What Is Apples' Official Position On MacKeeper

Mar 13, 2012

I have been using Mackeeper for several months and recently that product and its' maaketing company have been in the middle of a firestorm of public comment sand reviews. Being a csual user of computers and not having a strong background in programming or software, it is very hard to try and make sense of the extremely strong and conflicting reviews and comments on sites such as Mac Update. Does Apple have an official position on this product? Or, where can I go to get some reviews or opinions on this product without all of the vitriolic commentary?

Intel Mac :: 2010 - Add Thunderbolt To It?

Jun 8, 2012

I made a bit of a stuff up and bought the wrong drive for a friends iMac.I incorrectly took his specification down as being a 2011 iMac when it was actually a 2010. This meant I specified a thunderbolt drive (Promise Pegasys R4) thinking the iMac has thunderbolt. I was wrong!! It only has mini display and Firewire 800.I see some thunder bolt to firewire docks are due out soon but is there a product that will allow me to add a thunderbolt interface to the iMac?Something along the lines of a PCI type card or a Firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter?

Intel Mac :: Thunderbolt Drive Not Mounting?

Apr 30, 2012

Just bought the new Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter and the Apple Thunderbolt cable. Upon connecting I get this console log:

30.04.12 17:18:00,000 kernel: IOThunderboltSwitch(0x0)::listenerCallbackStatic - Thunderbolt HPD packet for route = 0x0 port = 1 unplug = 0
30.04.12 17:18:02,000 kernel: [ PCI configuration begin ]
30.04.12 17:18:02,000 kernel: PCI configuration changed (bridge=25 device=5 cardbus=0)
30.04.12 17:18:02,000 kernel: [ PCI configuration end, bridges 14 devices 18 ]

But the drive isn't showing up in finder AND disc utility. If I unplug the SATA connection between drive and adpter and plug it back in, the drive shows up.

Problem is: This way i cant't use it as startup volume, as the drive isn't mounted during startup.

Problem 2: Booting with the cable connected (internal startup volume this time) isn't possible either, as the wireless keyboard and trackpad aren't working after startup. I can see my desktop but mouse pointer and keyboard aren't working. After power off and unplugging everything boots up normally.

Intel Mac :: Thunderbolt Update Crashes It?

Jun 12, 2012

After installing a bunch of updates; inluding iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie; the culprit seems to be the Thunderbolt thing. After the installation a message came up that none of the updates could be installed. There's only a Restart-Button — that doesn't restart the iMac. The screen has its grey login background and the Mac is stalled. About 10 minutes later I turned off the iMac and then turned it back on again. What lead to an instant Kernel Panic. I then reinstalled Lion from the Recovery HD, installed all the updates; which included two restarts that performed fine. In the final session there are the iPhoto and iMovie updates — and the Thunderbolt thing. Downloading and installing seems to work fine; but then I get the above mentioned message AGAIN.

Intel Mac :: Were Any Mid-2010 Sold With Thunderbolt Ports

Jun 29, 2012

I purchased one of these (model MC511LL/A) on Ebay. It has not yet arrived. The seller posted a canned Ebay description of the model touting the 2 Thunderbolt ports, yet Apple's official specs page does not show this model as yet having Thunderbolt, which does not show up in the iMacs until the 2011 models. Is it possible that some of the mid-2010 models shipped with Thunderbolt ports?

OS X :: Could Snow Leopard Be Apples Vista?

Aug 28, 2009

So the question goes could Snow Leopard become Apples version of Vista? Before you scream hell no, let me ask you a few things and see if you agree. Everything I heard about Leopard was it was it's the best most stable OS ever made, and judging from a lot of people this is apples Best OS. Enter Snow Leopard- Lots of "under the hood" improvements 64bit faster, leaner but could this cause consumers a bunch of headaches?

Lots of compatibility issues, Buggy OS since its re-written lots of crashes and weirdness? I understand they are trying to move from 32 bit to 64 and using this new quasi 32/64 kernel and os but if consumers hears it's buggy, its slower (which some major sites are reporting in terms of graphics etc.) is Apple leaving the door open for ridicule (commercials) bashing Snow Leopard?

I am a windows and new OS X user so I like both, but if Snow Leopard requires a bunch of patches and fixes to get it stable and fast than what makes it any better than Vista was? For the record I am a Technet user as well and have been using the new Windows 7 x64 and it is rock solid, fast and stable. (minus the viruses). Don't get me wrong I am not bashing Apple I just got a system for Snow Leopard I am just asking if anyone here would be willing to criticize apple if the new OS is a mess?

Intel Mac :: Cannot Enable Thunderbolt Target Display Mode

May 13, 2012

I have a new 3.4 GHz Thunderbolt iMac and can't get Thunderbolt Target Display Mode to work with my current-model 13" MacBook Air or the current model 15" MacBook Pro furnished to me by my employer. Cmd-F2 just creates a beeping sound. I tried three different Thunderbolt cables. (They are not Mini DisplayPort cables. I have one of those from a previous model of iMac and it both looks different from the Thunderbolt cables and System Information doesn't show any change when I try to patch the computers together using it.)

All machines are fully updated to MacOS X 10.7.4 with all firmware updates applied. System Information shows that all are equipped with Thunderbolt interfaces; the Console app shows the kernel message indicating when the Thunderbolt devices are plugged in and removed; all three machines work in Thunderbolt Target Disk mode in both directions with all three cables with both Thunderbolt interfaces on the iMac.

Intel Mac :: Thunderbolt Dock For External Hard Drive?

IMac :: 13" GPU Query - Apples Logic?

Nov 20, 2010

I have been thinking about stepping up from my MBP 13" to a top spec imac but looking at the specs see that the GPU fitted is what I would class as incredibly out of date and can bought for about 75 new. This is really putting me off thinking about buying one and considering the imac was only "updated" not long ago does anyone know Apples logic for fitting such an old GPU? The 5750 is about 6 generations behind the latest. I realise GPU's get released constantly but not that quickly so that this new imac is this far behind. I wanted to use a mac for heavy photo and video and the odd gaming and although the 5750 is sufficient it just bugs me that I know it's a "budget" card.
