IMac :: 13" GPU Query - Apples Logic?
Nov 20, 2010
I have been thinking about stepping up from my MBP 13" to a top spec imac but looking at the specs see that the GPU fitted is what I would class as incredibly out of date and can bought for about 75 new. This is really putting me off thinking about buying one and considering the imac was only "updated" not long ago does anyone know Apples logic for fitting such an old GPU? The 5750 is about 6 generations behind the latest. I realise GPU's get released constantly but not that quickly so that this new imac is this far behind. I wanted to use a mac for heavy photo and video and the odd gaming and although the 5750 is sufficient it just bugs me that I know it's a "budget" card.

ive just purchased my first iMac as above for my son as his 1st desktop. im in the process of upgrading the RAM to 2gb and looking into purchasing Leopard 10.5. could anyone advise whether there are any other 'home' upgrades i can carry out to maximise this unit's potential for online use in 2012? and whether these 2 initial upgrades should give noticeable increase in performance to warrant the spend? i do have an iPhone4 and wish to use this unit for connection via iTunes. he currently likes to play online games such as 'Minecraft' and we have found it very slow so far...the unit does have the Airport wireless card installed, no bluetooth though.

So the question goes could Snow Leopard become Apples version of Vista? Before you scream hell no, let me ask you a few things and see if you agree. Everything I heard about Leopard was it was it's the best most stable OS ever made, and judging from a lot of people this is apples Best OS. Enter Snow Leopard- Lots of "under the hood" improvements 64bit faster, leaner but could this cause consumers a bunch of headaches?
Lots of compatibility issues, Buggy OS since its re-written lots of crashes and weirdness? I understand they are trying to move from 32 bit to 64 and using this new quasi 32/64 kernel and os but if consumers hears it's buggy, its slower (which some major sites are reporting in terms of graphics etc.) is Apple leaving the door open for ridicule (commercials) bashing Snow Leopard?
I am a windows and new OS X user so I like both, but if Snow Leopard requires a bunch of patches and fixes to get it stable and fast than what makes it any better than Vista was? For the record I am a Technet user as well and have been using the new Windows 7 x64 and it is rock solid, fast and stable. (minus the viruses). Don't get me wrong I am not bashing Apple I just got a system for Snow Leopard I am just asking if anyone here would be willing to criticize apple if the new OS is a mess?

I have been using Pages '08 for my final year dissertation for university. I really like it and have got used to it pretty quickly (coming from Windows).
I have downloaded the trial of iWork '09 and used Pages '09 to open my document. My document sections are as follows:
SECTION 1 - Title Page - 1 page
SECTION 2 - Contents, abstract, abbreviations, etc - 3 pages
SECTION 3 - Main report - 10 pages
SECTION 4 - Appendix - 6 pages
-------
TOTAL REPORT - 20 pages
In Pages '08 i can reset the Page Count in the Footer so that Section 3 displays for example 'Page 2 of 10'. This is exactly what I want because the section should have its own page count.
When I opened the document in Pages '09, the footer now displays for example 'Page 2 of 20'. Basically it is showing the entire document Page Count rather than the Page Count for that particular Section. Is this something that Apple have changed for Pages '09? or is there a setting so that the Page Count relates to the Section rather than the entire document?

I just have started playing on a Mac, and I'm being presented with a few keyboard challenges. I figured out a couple already, but still can't figure out how to minimize the WoW screen without logging out. On my Dell, I'd just hit the "windows" key. Also, I can't move skills manually from say the 1 key to the 4 key. Click and drag doesn't seem to work for this action.

I have been using Mackeeper for several months and recently that product and its' maaketing company have been in the middle of a firestorm of public comment sand reviews. Being a csual user of computers and not having a strong background in programming or software, it is very hard to try and make sense of the extremely strong and conflicting reviews and comments on sites such as Mac Update. Does Apple have an official position on this product? Or, where can I go to get some reviews or opinions on this product without all of the vitriolic commentary?

I've noticed that the system preferences for the keyboard backlight settings only seem to be partially working on my Mac Book Pro 2011. This might be since I updated to 10.7.4 or applied the firmware update EFI 2.7; I can't say which since I did the two close together. The keyboard still lights up and the slider that sets the time-out for illumination still works as do the F5 and F6 keys to dim and brighten the light. However, the preference setting seem to completely ignore the tick box to select whether you want the illumination function on or off.

What is the purpose of setting the apple ID in Users and Groups preference pane of System Preferences? Is it really necessary? All of apples services can still be used without setting an apple ID (like iCloud, iMessages, FaceTime, iTunes, etc)I am sure apple has a reason for it just would like to know what it is. Been messing with the spotlight websearch feature using it at the engine for our website, but there seems to a css class called .spotlight built into it somewhere. Is it able to be modified? If so, it also displays the constructed query for example "Constructed query: kMDItemTextContent=='march'c" at the top of the screen is there any way to get rid of this? There seems to be little to no info on this the websearch in general does anyone even use this?

on Apple's website it twice says that the MBP-R supports 2880 x 1800 as I quote: Retina display: 15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2880-by-1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch with support for millions of colorsSupported resolutions: 2880 by 1800 pixels (Retina); scaled resolutions: 1920 by 1200, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800, and 1024 by 640 pixelsI OWN a MBP-R and there is NO internal support for this resolution. The one that is not mentioned is the Retina optimized display of 1440 x 900. Is this a typo?

The original message was too long, so here is a shorter version. Suppose I have the following file structure: Joeirthdayphotos. I want to type, "photo, joe" to get me to the "photo" folder. Is there a simple way to do something like that?
--- ORIGINAL MESSAGE ---
Spotlight seems to only allow users to find files but without relation to where the file might be located. This works fine if the filename is "New_York_Birth_Rate_2008.pdf". How about if it's stored as "Birth_RatesNew_York2008.pdf"? Searching for "2008.pdf" would bring up a whole host of files and one could select the one in the right folder. But what if you have a large number of files called "2008.pdf", stored under various folders (birth rate, mortality, morbidity, rain fall, humidity, crime rate, etc etc etc" and you want to narrow the search? Sure, one could use the advanced search, but this defeats the purpose of a file launcher like Spotlight.
Ideally, I want to input something like, "new york, birth, 2008" in any order and it would search for all folders and files with similar names, sorted by placing ones with more matched terms in terms of the file path. Is there an input method to do this? Surely this is a common scenario?
Here's another example, "Sales Person ABronx2009SeptInsurance Plan A.pdf". Now imagine I have 200 sales persons, and 50 areas. I want to type "richard, longevity plus.doc, bronx" to narrow the list. Sure, I can use advanced search, but as I said, this defeats the purpose of spotlight.

Does anybody know what the specific differences are between Logic Studio and Logic Express?
Also, is there any place where I can get Logic Studio for cheaper than the $499 retail price? The cheapest place I found I was at MacMall for only $49 cheaper.
Can anybody find anyplace cheaper, preferably around $350 or lower?

As the title implies, I've got 3 year old G5 iMac sitting as a paperweight at my desk. At least half that time ago the logic board died and I was quoted a repair bill of around $900. I couldn't go with it, but I couldn't decide what to do with it either. I now have to get rid of it and since I know that this model had lots of issues with logic boards I'm hoping some of you will have some good advice.

I got a mac mini out of warranty (core 2 duo 1.83 ghz) that just died on me. I went to the apple store and they sent it in for a diagnostic. They confirmed that the logic board is dead and will be around $350 to replaced. I'm still weighing my options and was wondering if anyone can direct me to a site that sells replacement logic boards to see if I'm better off doing the repairs myself?

i need to replace my older Imac ( 5 years old )with a new one, thinking about few models but a bit confused with all the posts I don t do gaming and mostly use the computer with music applications such as Protools, or may go with Logic or Cubase. i m hesitating between buying the a 2009 Imac ( 21 or 27) most likely refurbished
or
the latest one
the 21.5 3.06 or the 3.26
or
or a refurbished
i5 27
Would that really matters knowing the type of applications i use? Would one be much more suited for my needs knowing that i money can be an issue ( though if i have to i will spend the few extra dollars)

My 17 inch iMac G5 1.8ghz seems to have died. For a while it's been refusing to power up and then powering up randomly but now it wont power up at all. I've looked on the logic board and reset the SMU etc but I can only get the first LED to light up. I think this means the logic board has died. Is it worth replacing the logic board and can it be done easily myself? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay out for a new alu intel iMac? I'm in the UK btw, any ideas on logic board prices?
