PowerPC :: Old IBook - Sell/trash/sell For Parts?

Jul 24, 2007

I have an old, old 10Gig iBook - the very first one that came out in white, I think I bought it 2001 - that has been working great until the power cord broke a few months ago. I just bought a new Macbook to replace it, and I'm wondering what I should do with the old one? The only problem is that I have no power cord so I can't go in and wipe the harddrive, and I would really like all my stuff erased before I give it away. Is there any thing worth any money on that old machine?

MacBook Air :: Securely Deleting Flash Media?

Jun 16, 2012

I just read an article by an online about secure file deletion [URL].. The gist is that flash media in general aren't properly overwritten for secure deletion by the typical utilities.  The link they provide to a utility for flash media secure overwrite is for Windows OS only.  Does anyone know if  OS X disk utility actually securely overwrites flash media files?  If not, does anyone know of an OS X compatible utility that will do it?

MacBook Pro :: Securely Format My Hard Drive Without An Installation Cd?

Jun 15, 2012

I have OS X Lion. I recently purchased this Macbook Pro 15" laptop, and I am planning on returning it, to get the newer upgraded laptop, as the store manager said I can do this, since I purchased my laptop within 30 days of the announcement of a new MacBook Pro. I would like to format everything, before I return it back to the store, however, it never came with an installation cd. How can I do this? I have tried ways that I have heard, such as creating a new admin user account and deleting all the other accounts. Also I have erased all the free space using the disk utility section. However, it will not allow me to erase the hard drive. Is there a way to do this without an installation cd?

MacBook Air :: Getting Ready To Make The Leap

Nov 28, 2008

I am a PC user (please don't flame me) but am getting ready to make the leap into a MBA which will be my travel laptop. Are there any resources that anyone can recommend on co-existing between PC and Mac. I'm told its no big deal to transfer files like Word, Excel and the like between the two, but quite frankly I'm a little nervous as this is my first venture into Apple. But the MBA just blew me away and now I'm pretty psyched. I've been lurking here a while and have learned a lot but need to get comfortable existing in 2 different worlds.

MacBook Air :: Empty Trash Securely - High Temp With Fan At 5400

Sep 18, 2009

Today I tried to "empty the trash securely". There were 73 items. After 5-8 minutes I selected "stop" because the Fan was at 5400 and the Temp was 78 degree C. This is the first time I have heard the Fan. Also, it seemed as though it was stuck trying to empty. That is when I noticed the temp/fan issue.

MacBook Pro :: Regular And RAID Ready SSDs

Aug 19, 2010

I am checking out the market on SSDs for my Macbook Pro and I've found a few manufacturers differentiate their product lines as "regular" SSDs and Raid-Ready SSDs. The raid ready's being more expensive and having a little less space. I'm not as tech savvy as I should probably be, so I don't know what Raid or Raid-Ready means and what value it might have.

I left mine back home (6000 miles away) and find it annoying to have to sit very close to the wall every time I'm charging my MBP and using it at the same time. The extension cords I've seen on Amazon and the like all seem quite dodgy, is there any way I can buy the extension cord directly from Apple? I haven't seen it in the online store?

MacBook Pro :: MacBook Pro Cost/Benefit To Repair Old, Or Sell And Buy New?

Jul 14, 2010

I have used a Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) for the past four years of college. In that time I've had it repaired once for some spillage, but other than that nothing has been done. The laptop has recently been showing serious age. I don't have a ton of extra cash, and was wondering if it would be smartest to A) Buy piecemeal repairs, and fix this one or B) sell/scrap this and purchase something new. I don't know the numbers enough to do a cost-benefit, so any help would gladly be appreciated!

INFO/BACKGROUND

Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) Bought in Summer 2006

? Track pad seems to be breaking/broken ($ fix cost?)o Does not click appropriately
o Frequently messes up typing when barely touched
o Extremely finicky? Screen sometimes displays lines of messy black lines in the middle of images with no rhyme or reason ($ fix cost?)o What in the world could be causing the screen to display improperly in lines?
o Is this a video card failure?
o Is memory too low?
o Is it the logic board? The battery is 100% dead and useless ($ fix cost?)o Laptop must be plugged in to work? Slow, and seemingly inconsistent performance ($ fix cost?)o Memory/ram was never updated
o Safari has to be opened twice to work, first time it always just sits there
o Microsoft Office 03 applications run at a snails pace? Still running original 2006 OS as well as all old OS applications ($ fix cost?)

? Case shows signs of use along edges with separation ($ fix cost?)

Also, if there are any ideas on what this would sell for, or a total cost to get it into solid running (and lasting!) shape would be awesome. I'm at wits end trying to budget for all this -

OS X :: Setup To Login Remotely And Securely To Network?

Jul 26, 2009

Up until Friday, I had a Linux server in my office that among other things, served as a remote login using NXServer. The thing I liked best about NXServer was that all of the data was sent over ssh on port 22. This meant that along with the security of ssh, I also only had to open a single port. The Linux server has been taken offline and everything moved to a MacPro.

The only thing I don't have setup is a way to remotely login to my network. I know I can still log in with ssh but I would like to be able to run a GUI when I log in. What's out there that will allow me to do this? I know about VNC and have used it in the past but it lacks the single secure port option (I believe).

It's only now that internals are becoming easy to find. Because I have a lot of store credit, I'd like to get this from Best Buy, but they only have internals in stock.
