PowerPC :: Sell IMac G5 For MacBook?
Nov 13, 2007
I'm stuck trying to think if I should keep my iMac G5 and save up for a MacBook or sellthe G5 to purchase a new MacBook? The iMac is the 2.1GHz PPC model with iSight. I'm thinking I could at least get a grand off of it and then from there save up the extra hundred to at least afford a refurb.
So if you guys can help me decide on what you think I should do. I just need some opinions.

I have an old, old 10Gig iBook - the very first one that came out in white, I think I bought it 2001 - that has been working great until the power cord broke a few months ago. I just bought a new Macbook to replace it, and I'm wondering what I should do with the old one? The only problem is that I have no power cord so I can't go in and wipe the harddrive, and I would really like all my stuff erased before I give it away. Is there any thing worth any money on that old machine?

Alright, so I have the new i5 MBP.. Now I am debating if I should use it as my main machine.. I have a 24in Dell LCD I can hook up to it...
It is faster then my current iMac ( early 2008, 2.8Ghz 4GB of Ram 320G HD)..
So I am not to sure what to do..
What would you do?

I am sorry if this has posted before.
I was wondering if selling parts of the iMac, like the Magic mouse or the wireless keyboard would void the warranty?

I hope this is ok to post in here, because unfortunately i'm short of the post count required for the marketplace. I was wondering where would be a good place to advertise a late-2007 alu iMac? I'm trying to avoid eBay at the moment because i'll end up losing a fair amount of money in eBay and then Paypal fees. Also, is 650 an ok asking price? It's a 20" 2.0GHz C2D, 250GB HDD, 3G RAM.

Does Apple sell the bluetooth wireless keyboard with the number pad and arrows? Its something that I overlooked when looking into buying a mac. I want the aluminum wireless keyboard, but I hate not having the number pad and arrows. I couldn't find one anywhere.

I have an iMac PowerPC G4 (Mac OS X 10.2.8, yea I know) and I want to sell it but I know I won't get very much for it since it's so old. Do you guys have any guesses to how much I can get for it and how I should go about doing that? Is it even worth it?

Is there much difference between my current 24" iMac and the top of the range Mac Mini?
iMac specs
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2GB RAM
320GB Hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
Mac Mini specs
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
4GB RAM
Dual 500GB hard drives
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
I don't really need much power and I don't do any gaming so would there be much difference in speed between the two machines?

I left mine back home (6000 miles away) and find it annoying to have to sit very close to the wall every time I'm charging my MBP and using it at the same time. The extension cords I've seen on Amazon and the like all seem quite dodgy, is there any way I can buy the extension cord directly from Apple? I haven't seen it in the online store?

I have used a Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) for the past four years of college. In that time I've had it repaired once for some spillage, but other than that nothing has been done. The laptop has recently been showing serious age. I don't have a ton of extra cash, and was wondering if it would be smartest to A) Buy piecemeal repairs, and fix this one or B) sell/scrap this and purchase something new. I don't know the numbers enough to do a cost-benefit, so any help would gladly be appreciated!
INFO/BACKGROUND
Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) Bought in Summer 2006
? Track pad seems to be breaking/broken ($ fix cost?)o Does not click appropriately
o Frequently messes up typing when barely touched
o Extremely finicky? Screen sometimes displays lines of messy black lines in the middle of images with no rhyme or reason ($ fix cost?)o What in the world could be causing the screen to display improperly in lines?
o Is this a video card failure?
o Is memory too low?
o Is it the logic board? The battery is 100% dead and useless ($ fix cost?)o Laptop must be plugged in to work? Slow, and seemingly inconsistent performance ($ fix cost?)o Memory/ram was never updated
o Safari has to be opened twice to work, first time it always just sits there
o Microsoft Office 03 applications run at a snails pace? Still running original 2006 OS as well as all old OS applications ($ fix cost?)
? Case shows signs of use along edges with separation ($ fix cost?)
Also, if there are any ideas on what this would sell for, or a total cost to get it into solid running (and lasting!) shape would be awesome. I'm at wits end trying to budget for all this -

I'm selling my PowerMac, which was upgraded with an aftermarket CPU. I've decided to reinstall the original CPU and sell the PowerMac and upgrade separately.
I noticed that Apple didn't use thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink, and I was wondering if I should do the same or go and buy a tube of Arctic Silver.

My friend purchased a used Macbook and needed to reinstall Leopard on it (to remove the previous owner's junk), so he borrowed my install DVDs. Alas, the first DVD got stuck in the combo drive, so he had to send it in (under Future Shop's Product Replacement Plan, not under AppleCare, but FS sent it to Apple for repair). When he got it back, many weeks later, the DVD didn't work and could not be booted from. Will Apple give me a replacement? Does it matter which one of us calls? I'm thinking they might want the serial number to find the incident information, and since it's his Mac that was sent in, that he should call.
will they let me purchase a replacement OEM DVD (with iLife and everything that came with my Macbook)? Anyone know how much?

Amazon's second generation of its Kindle ebook reader takes cues from Apple in hopes to make the new product the "iPod of books." Here's a graphical tour of how close Amazon comes to replicating the iPod experience. A much smaller box Compared to the giant box that the original Kindle came in, the Kindle 2 ships in a tiny package the size of a textbook. To slim down, Amazon dropped the large hard-bound book volume case it shipped with the original model.
The smaller packaging will also save Amazon money in materials and shipping. The company already streamlines the ordering process to associate the unit's serial number with an Amazon user account so that the device is ready to go as soon as it is received. It's in the company's interests to push its readers to adopt the Kindle because sending digital books to their Kindle incurs none of the warehousing and shipping of heavy books. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that Kindle e-books now make up 10 percent of the online retailer's total book sales for the books that are available in kindle format (statement clarified - ed)......................

currently i have a blackbook and imac core duo, 17 ". My macbook beats the imac in everything except graphics. Before i got my imac i seriously considered a g5 dual 2.0, but the money wasnt there. I see an apple refurb dual 2.0 for 1599, and im sure i cud get one a lot cheaper used here or on another board. How much of a performance increase will i see IN APERTURE going to the PM, if any? i would need a good increase to justify it, and eve then im not sure my parents would be ok with me spending a few hundred bucks to upgrade

I am doing a presentation for a class thingy in technology about new media and i'm trying to express how when macintosh youtubers started uploading video blogs when they switched to intel/intel made iMacs and about this media blah blah blah. In the pic attached is that a iMac G5 or intel. I see spot light on the top right so it's either running tiger or leopard. I thought I saw a apple remote magnetic thingy on the side. Did the iMac g5 have one?

My intel 2006 iMac recently died, and I'm wondering if I could one of the 1GB RAM sticks into the a G3 iMac I own. And more importantly: If I could put the hard drive from the intel iMac into the iMac G3.
The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.

So I have a 1.8ghz dual G5 with 3gb of ram for work. I mainly work in Adobe CS and do a far amount of Photoshop work. At any given time I may have all of Adobe CS plus Office and a few other apps running -- and a gazillion fonts. Went to the store and saw the new 24" iMac. How would a new iMac compare to my late '04 1.8DP G5? On that same note, how would a new MacBook Pro compare to the above?

My mother's G5 imac is slowly dying. It will not wake up from sleep at all (even hard reset won't work). Her local tech people say it is a faulty logic board. (and the cost of replacement wouldn't be worth it). She can still use it if it never sleeps, which she will do for a while. Can she buy a mini (or I give her mine) and use the imac monitor? She would rather spend as little as possible.

I tried to replace my old fan but had some trubble. I also replaced the original HDD with an 2.5" drive. So, it's really quit for now. In fact, I wonder, if it's possible to leave the iMac G4 (800MHZ) without a fan, unless I figuered out my problem with the fan connectors. Ok, I know, the fan inside the iMac is not for nothing. But, is there anyone outside, who uses his iMac without a fan?

Original thread:http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=174605I just wanted to update readers on how it went (so far)So I was finally given the graphite iMac I found in the tech room (for free ).Good news:We booted it up and it ran ok, it even had OS X on it.It turned out to be the 13gig HD version, which I belive to be the first Graphite iMac (well one can?t have all the luck )Bad news:They didn?t have the keyboard and mouse any more (I borrowed someones at the office to check it out).
I only have wireless keyboard and mice, so I was forced to park it in the basement until I can get hold of some USB stuff.
