MacBook Air :: Empty Trash Securely - High Temp With Fan At 5400

Sep 18, 2009

Today I tried to "empty the trash securely". There were 73 items. After 5-8 minutes I selected "stop" because the Fan was at 5400 and the Temp was 78 degree C. This is the first time I have heard the Fan. Also, it seemed as though it was stuck trying to empty. That is when I noticed the temp/fan issue.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work With CPU Temp / Sending Warning For High Temp

OS X :: How Unsecure Is Empty Trash Compared To Secure Empty Trash?

Aug 31, 2009

I moved a bunch of files to the trash can after installing Snow Leopard, mainly backup files from OmniFocus.

I clicked Secure Empty Trash and over 500,000 items began deleting. These 500,000+ items deleted at the rate of 2-3 items a second. This would total 138 hours equaling over 5 days to Secure Empty the trash.

This is just ridiculous in my option so I just did the "Empty Trash" feature, showing me only 350 items, which deleted quickly in under 5 minutes...

So far I know with Secure Empty Trash that the trash is securely layered with 0's & 1's....but wonder what happens with just "Empty Trash?"

How easily accessible is it for someone to retrieve something that i've deleted?

MacBook Pro :: Getting High Temp In 90s Playing SC2

Aug 3, 2010

I don't see anyone else mentioning temps this high. My specs are below. I followed the directions in a post here in the forums and his directions did work, and I used the modified latest drivers from laptoptogo (258.96), and I was able to overclock the gpu on the windows side. I'm using Vista 32-bit (I know, but that's the only Windows OS I have). I didn't even OC it much, just 550 on the core and 1200 memory, and all was well. The framerate noticeably improved and I was able to play SC2 on mostly high settings (including shaders) with FPS ~ mid 30s and lowest mid 20s. I was a happy camper until I checked my temp via the Nvidia monitor, and noticed it went up to 92C at one point! At first, I thought this was because I was playing on 1080p on my HDTV, but I played again and it went to 88C on native screen.

A couple notes: I did not modify fan speed (allowing the native algorithm to run). I have a Core i5 15-inch MBP, 2.4GHz, high-res matte screen, 320 GB HDD, Vista 32-bit under bootcamp. Playing in native res. How come my temps are running so high? I know YMMV but I haven't even OC'ed it half of what people on this forum are doing successfully with stable temps in the 70s. Also, could it possibly be the fact that I'm using the latest drivers and maybe I need to use the older driver people are mentioning on this site? Is it possible I need to monitor my temps with another program other than the Nvidia one?

MacBook Pro :: Proc Temp Constantly High - How To Know About It

Apr 7, 2010

I had my computer idling and noticed that the fans sped up to full blast, so naturally I tried to figure out what was causing it to heat up. I quit pretty much every app I had running, no diff. I unplugged my iPhone, no diff. Even shutdown the computer, fans went right back up as soon as I loaded up OS X. So I looked at SMC Fancontrol (which I never really even use) and the temp was at 88 C!!

I have nothing open, completely turned off the computer and rebooted it to make sure that nothing running would be causing it, and it's STILL running hot as hell! Is there anything I can do to see what's causing it to run so damn hot? I really don't wanna put a crap-load of wear on my fans and CPU here.

I'm using a 2.2 ghz SantaRosa MBP running the latest version of Snow Leopard.

MacBook :: CPU Runs At High Temp - Wants To Reduce The Heat?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm using iStat and it says that my CPU runs at temps around high 70s, low 80 degrees Celsius for about 10-15 minutes at a time (also says the same for Airport card). It usually takes a while for it to cool down. I always place my laptop on flat surfaces. It does this even during light internet surfing minus flash or any other multimedia...now WITH multimedia use, it reaches the 80s no problem and I just quit the process cuz I don't want my laptop to explode one day.

I just wanted to know if this was average and what temps everyone else is usually running at?

I'm afraid that if it runs at these high of temps for a long time each time like that, then it may do some damage somewhere...

OS X :: Secure Empty Trash Regain GB's But Not Empty Trash...?

Jan 13, 2010

I've noticed that when I "Secure Empty Trash" though it takes longer, I usually regain a lot of gigabytes back. Currently, as of this post i'm "secure emptying trash" and i've regained about 25GB's which sounds about right considering there was about that much worth of video recordings from my video camera I no longer needed.

In the past when I've just "deleted trash" i've seen different results. If I have say 10GB's in the trash and I just "empty trash" then i'll maybe gain back like a GB or 2. ...if anything.

So, my concern is...say currently with the 25GB amount of trash I have, If I decided to just "empty trash", I obviously would not have gained back all the 25GB's..., perhaps just a few, guessing something like 5GB.

Well, does that mean that those GB's that are emptied in the trash (not securely) are just lost forever?

..Or will I regain those GB's the next time around (say weeks later) I securely empty the trash with whatever happens to be in there (all new stuff in the trash)?

Am I making sense?

Kinda confusing to me cause I don't understand it. But I feel it's vital for me to get this and have the most amount of gigs available on my Mac now that i'm using about 30GB's per week filming stuff and editing it on iMovie.

Mac :: Constant CPU Usage & High Fans Speed Temp On Black Santa Rosa MacBook

Mar 11, 2010

I only started noticing my fan running a bit on the fast side this evening after installing the new Safari 4.0.5 update. I looked at iStat Menus for temp and CPU. And I was seeing about 190 degrees F for CPU temp with lid closed running ext display. Also there was a constant usage of the cpu (about 30% User and 20% System). There's not one particular process I can see in Activity Monitor that acting out of the ordinary and using a lot of CPU. Just stuff like coreservicesd, WindowServer, launchd that are shuffling around and using about 1-4% of CPU.I ran repair disk permissions and verify disk. Verify Disk found errors and said I need to repair my Macintosh HD, which I have now done successfully.

My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.

I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Empty Trash And Icon Never Indicates Files Are In Trash

Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X?Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Empty The Trash

Apr 24, 2012

When I empty my trash using the icon my computer has a major crash and the screen goes grey and I have to reboot from the power button. If I secure empty trash using alt/opt, cmd clicking the trash icon I get the following message:-   The operation can’t be completed because the item “.DS_Store” is in use. I've tried SUDO RM -RF ~/.TRASH/*  and enetering my password but it doesn't fix it I've tried chflags -R nouchg  then dragging items into terminal and that doesn't fix it

I've tried :- Open Terminal and enter this command:

rm -rf ~/.Trash/

Then right click the Finder icon in the dock while holding down the opt/alt key, select Relaunch.  Relaunching Finder will recreate ~/.Trash but this doesn't work either

MacBook Pro :: Using Secure Empty Trash

Oct 11, 2010

Basically, I am 'securely emptying my trash' as we speak. With that said, why exactly does it say that it currently has to empty around 400 something files? Does that include every single file I've deleted in the past, not using the 'secure empty trash'?

Also, once if I deleted my download history, not using 'secure empty trash', is there a way to retrieve it and use 'secure empty trash' to empty it once again?

I'm just a little confused about the 400 something files being deleted using 'secure empty trash'.
