Hardware :: How To Use Multiple USB Extender Cords

Jul 22, 2009

Quick question...don't know if this is the right place to post...I need to connect a printer via USB but the cord is not long enough. I am planning on buying two USB extender cables (with a male and a female end) to reach the distance. The total cord length should not exceed 18 feet, but will I loose signal at that distance with the signal having to travel through 3 different cords?

Hardware :: Retractable MagSafe Cords (How To Make Them)

Sep 12, 2009

Working for a business that deals a lot with Mac notebooks, we're looking for a way to manage our MagSafe cords. We have a counter in which we set the computers on, and underneath the counter we keep all the cords. We have some retractable Ethernet cords (which are wonderful), but does anyone know of a way to make MagSafe cords retractable? Or is there a DIY way to make your own retractable cords? I thought about getting a retractable box of some kind, gutting it, and putting in the MagSafe, but not sure where to start.

OS X :: Mixed 30" ACD And 2008 MacPro Power Cords?

Sep 29, 2010

I have a 2008 MP and in a rush to pack I pulled my cord out of my MacPro and just as I did that I realized I had already unplugged my 30" ACD. The cords have been mixed up.

They're the same really with the exception of one cord has a gray plug that goes into either the MP or the ACD. On that cord is a white label that reads: 13A 125V~ whereas the other says nothing and is 100% while throughout. I want to think the gray one goes to the ACD but I cannot be certain and I'm afraid to blind test them.

MacBook Pro :: Does Apple Sell Magsafe Extension Cords Separately

Jul 2, 2012

I left mine back home (6000 miles away) and find it annoying to have to sit very close to the wall every time I'm charging my MBP and using it at the same time. The extension cords I've seen on Amazon and the like all seem quite dodgy, is there any way I can buy the extension cord directly from Apple? I haven't seen it in the online store?

Hardware :: Can Use Airport Express As An Extender

Jun 24, 2009

Can I use the AE as an extender to my already established wireless network and if so how does that work? I mean does it require to be hard wired to my router or does it connect wirelessly?

Sorry, I really don't know much about this stuff and I'm just getting started.

Because of my house configuration, I do not get a very good signal on the far side of my house so hubby said to get an extender.

Hardware :: How To Use Airport Express As An Extender

May 2, 2010

Using an Airport Extreme located in the basement, I am unable to get optimum wireless signal in the upstairs portion of the house. If I add an Airport Express as an extender, would I have to have two separate wireless networks or would the Express be the same network? A single network would be preferable.

If the above works, the goal would be having the Express located upstairs and hard wired to the Extreme downstairs. The Express would be hard wired via USB to a printer and the printer hard wired to an iMac. If I understand that connection correctly, it would allow for wireless printing on a laptop via the Express without having the iMac on.

Hardware :: Using AirPort Extreme As Extender WDS In Basement?

Mar 18, 2009

I have a friend who has internet coming thru cable into the living to an airport express. We are wondering if he can use an airport extreme as an wds extender in the basement home office, where there is not a cable hookup. The office has several PCs and several printers. Some of the PCs could be wired(ethernet) or wireless to the extreme. Would this situation work? Could airtunes be used in the living, and the extreme be used as a print server in the basement? Also would airdisks be supported on the extreme since it is being used as a WDS?

OS X :: Setting Up Airport Extreme As Range Extender?

Mar 29, 2009

On the Bestbuy website they market the airport extreme as having the capability to become a range extender and the guy in the store said it would work with a linksys. The Linksys is a WRT150N. I have the airport extreme set-up in my room and it has a solid green light. When I go into the set-up for it I click join network and It sees the linksys and I select it and it says everything is working fine but it stays on the green light and the signal isn't being extended.

Hardware :: Using AirPort Express As Client / Range Extender

Sep 29, 2010

So, first time setting up an Airport Express. I had read that the Airport Express can be used as a range extender so I figure I'd give it a shot. Using the Airport Utility, I followed the directions to set it up to "connect to my current wireless network". It found my SSID and I was able to put my password there too. I had named the Airport Express "iqwertyi Extended". Everything looks fine, now my question is, am I suppose to see this SSID?

Or am I only supposed to see the original router "iqwertyi"? The reason I ask is that I don't see the new "iqwertyi Extended" SSID and connecting to the original "iqwertyi" on the other side of the house doesn't seem to have a better connection. I had plugged in the Airport Express in the middle of the house, but not sure if I set this up properly.

Hardware :: How To Set Up Airport Express As Linksys Network Extender

Jan 6, 2009

I have a Linksys WRT54GS ver 1.0 as my wireless router. It has an external signal booster to 500mV and a high gain 9db antenna. My iMac is connected through Ethernet to the router.

The main use is to stream music using couple of Slimdevices Squeezebox units. The signal of the one in my bedroom is in average 68% so I want to extend my nextwork to impreve the signal.

I jut bought an airport express and I would like to use to extend the network. So far I have been able to connect the AE to the existing network but not to extend it. My network is WEP 64 encrypted.

Does anybody have the steps on how to set up the AE to extend the network?

Mac :: Mac Pro 2006 Successfully Change Into 2.66 - Adjustable Screwdriver With Extender?

Jul 24, 2009

Just a report on my successful upgrade from a Mac Pro 2006 2.66 quad (5150s) to a 3.00 quad (5160s). It was pretty easy, but I can't stress enough having the right tools, particularly the long, thin 3mm allen wrench. You need about 10" of length to get down to the heatsink nuts on the motherboard. I thought my adjustable screwdriver with extender would work, but the extender was too fat for the cutouts in the heatsink. You need a rod no more than 5/16" wide. Also, though people have said that a 15 Torx works (it does), I actually think the 3mm hex is the perfect fit. It may be tough finding these locally, even at a home depot, so you may want to buy online ahead of time unless you want to splurge and buy a set of long allen wrench keys (~$25 and up). The other challenge was connecting the lower heatsink's temperature sensor cable to the motherboard. If you have fat fingers like me, an angled hemostat or needlenose pliers will help you get into the tight space. And lastly, a small vacuum cleaner would be useful to suck all of the dust bunnies off the heatsinks and the fans and out of the motherboard's nooks and crannies. While you're in there, you might as well clean it out

Hardware :: AirPort Express Can Work As Wireless Extender

Aug 21, 2009

So I just bought a new revision Airport Express, so from reading I've learned that the AE can act as a bridge/wireless extender for my AEBS (dual-band), my question is, can it only do either N-5ghz or G2.4ghz, and not both at the same time? Also can anyone give me some ideas on Real Life range I should expect to get with it? If I can in fact only do one band, I'll be doing the G band as N pretty much covers everywhere but G isn't so good at penetrating the walls it seems.

Hardware :: Airport Express As Wireless Extender For D-Link DIR-655?

Mar 30, 2010

I am a Windows user at the moment and plan to get a MBP in a few months. I am currently using a D-Link DIR-655 router. My house is a 2 story plus basement, and the D-link pretty much needs to be in the basement. We get excellent wifi reception in much of the house, but it is very spotty on the 2nd floor (an open to the first floor loft) and on the end of the first floor of the house opposite the router.

I like the idea of being able to use AirTunes, so I was thinking of buying an Airport Express as an extender to get usable reception throughout the house. I figure eventually, I may replace the D-Link with an Airport Extreme.

So can I do this wirelessly or do I have to wire the Express to the D-Link? Doing so would involve making holes in things that I don't want to make holes in, so I will put up with a spotty wifi network rather than getting an extender. Our house is a log home with hardwood floors and wood walls and ceilings throughout, so it is not as easy as patching some drywall if we decide to get rid of the wire/hole someday.

I am not a power user, not a gamer and if I want to download huge files, I can do so on the laptop in the basement. I just want a decent wireless connection throughout the house, and would like the ability to stream iTunes.

And if the Airport cannot be a repeater for the D-Link, what about the reverse, with the Airport as the base and the D-Link as the repeater?

Hardware :: Upgrade Internet Signal And Speed / Install Range Extender Or Wireless Access Point

Sep 6, 2009

I am running ATT DSL Extreme 3.0 and have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I currently only get wireless in approx. half of my house, and the half in which I don't get it, will be needing it. So I am going to need to buy a range extender or wireless access point? I am a college student so I don't have a large budget, but I am looking for advice. Should I stick with Linksys and just buy one of their range extenders, or should I buy an Airport Extreme and hope the N signal is stronger? I am going to be sharing files soon when I get my Mac Mini HTPC setup going on in the living room to this from my other iMac's and MBP.

In summary, I am just not sure if it would be worth the extra $ for the Airport extreme or if I should just stick with the linksys.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Automator Workflow To TAR Multiple Files In A Single Directory Into Multiple TAR Archives In Succession?

Jun 12, 2012

I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one.

[Code]...

I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.

ITunes :: Setup Multiple Users With Multiple Devices?

Mar 12, 2012

I'm trying to find the easiest solution to our family music situation.  4 users, 4 devices (ipods, ipad, imac, pc laptops), and 4 different musical song interests.  I'm sure there are millions of households that have the same exact situation.  I want to be able to pull up only my musical library, not my kid's music, and then easily synch it to my ipod.  Everyone in the family wants to do this same thing.  I have spent alot of time trying to search the forums/internet and there does not seem to be one "most popular" solution.  I did setup iCloud for each family member using a different Apple ID than my main Apple ID, and I'm happy that ALL the music shows up on my ipad.  But between iCloud, MobileMe, Home Sharing it all gets very confusing.  Some say to setup multiple computer login accounts, and others say to setup 1 playlist for each family member and synch from that playlist.

I would think 1 itunes account allows you to easily share a purchased song with 4 users, instead of buying songs twice.

So here are a few of my questions-

1-Is it best to have only 1 itunes account and then synch all devices off of 1 main computer?

2-Or since we each have iCloud accounts, will they be able to synch their ipods from their own pc laptop?

3-And when they synch, what is the easiest way to exclude other users music in itunes? (other than unchecking hundreds of artists)

4-Or setup 4 separate computer login accounts on the imac and then keep 1 itunes account?  If so, how does this work when they open itunes?

OS X :: Multiple Burn Errors With Multiple Programs?

I'm on a Powermac G.5 dual 1.8 with an upgraded superdrive running 10.5.6

About 3 days ago I noticed that I couldn't burn a dvd using Roxio's Toast 10. I would receive a medium write error.

I tried a second time with the same results.

I then moved to itunes which I have updated to the fullest version and tried to burn a playlist to cd and also received a medium write error.

Finally I tried to burn the original dvd using disk utility and it almost worked up until it hung on finishing. The funny thing about the run with disk utility was that the disk played in my home dvd player with no problems despite quitting the burn prematurely.
