Hardware :: Using AirPort Extreme As Extender WDS In Basement?

Mar 18, 2009

I have a friend who has internet coming thru cable into the living to an airport express. We are wondering if he can use an airport extreme as an wds extender in the basement home office, where there is not a cable hookup. The office has several PCs and several printers. Some of the PCs could be wired(ethernet) or wireless to the extreme. Would this situation work? Could airtunes be used in the living, and the extreme be used as a print server in the basement? Also would airdisks be supported on the extreme since it is being used as a WDS?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme As Network Extender?

Aug 26, 2008

My home network is using a Netgear wireless router, which is just used for sharing the internet. I was wondering if Airport Extremes could be placed in another room to connect to a USB hard drive and share it, as well as extending the internet from my Netgear wireless?

OS X :: Setting Up Airport Extreme As Range Extender?

Mar 29, 2009

On the Bestbuy website they market the airport extreme as having the capability to become a range extender and the guy in the store said it would work with a linksys. The Linksys is a WRT150N. I have the airport extreme set-up in my room and it has a solid green light. When I go into the set-up for it I click join network and It sees the linksys and I select it and it says everything is working fine but it stays on the green light and the signal isn't being extended.

Hardware :: Can Use Airport Express As An Extender

Jun 24, 2009

Can I use the AE as an extender to my already established wireless network and if so how does that work? I mean does it require to be hard wired to my router or does it connect wirelessly?

Sorry, I really don't know much about this stuff and I'm just getting started.

Because of my house configuration, I do not get a very good signal on the far side of my house so hubby said to get an extender.

Hardware :: How To Use Airport Express As An Extender

May 2, 2010

Using an Airport Extreme located in the basement, I am unable to get optimum wireless signal in the upstairs portion of the house. If I add an Airport Express as an extender, would I have to have two separate wireless networks or would the Express be the same network? A single network would be preferable.

If the above works, the goal would be having the Express located upstairs and hard wired to the Extreme downstairs. The Express would be hard wired via USB to a printer and the printer hard wired to an iMac. If I understand that connection correctly, it would allow for wireless printing on a laptop via the Express without having the iMac on.

Hardware :: Using AirPort Express As Client / Range Extender

Sep 29, 2010

So, first time setting up an Airport Express. I had read that the Airport Express can be used as a range extender so I figure I'd give it a shot. Using the Airport Utility, I followed the directions to set it up to "connect to my current wireless network". It found my SSID and I was able to put my password there too. I had named the Airport Express "iqwertyi Extended". Everything looks fine, now my question is, am I suppose to see this SSID?

Or am I only supposed to see the original router "iqwertyi"? The reason I ask is that I don't see the new "iqwertyi Extended" SSID and connecting to the original "iqwertyi" on the other side of the house doesn't seem to have a better connection. I had plugged in the Airport Express in the middle of the house, but not sure if I set this up properly.

Hardware :: How To Set Up Airport Express As Linksys Network Extender

Jan 6, 2009

I have a Linksys WRT54GS ver 1.0 as my wireless router. It has an external signal booster to 500mV and a high gain 9db antenna. My iMac is connected through Ethernet to the router.

The main use is to stream music using couple of Slimdevices Squeezebox units. The signal of the one in my bedroom is in average 68% so I want to extend my nextwork to impreve the signal.

I jut bought an airport express and I would like to use to extend the network. So far I have been able to connect the AE to the existing network but not to extend it. My network is WEP 64 encrypted.

Does anybody have the steps on how to set up the AE to extend the network?

Hardware :: AirPort Express Can Work As Wireless Extender

Aug 21, 2009

So I just bought a new revision Airport Express, so from reading I've learned that the AE can act as a bridge/wireless extender for my AEBS (dual-band), my question is, can it only do either N-5ghz or G2.4ghz, and not both at the same time? Also can anyone give me some ideas on Real Life range I should expect to get with it? If I can in fact only do one band, I'll be doing the G band as N pretty much covers everywhere but G isn't so good at penetrating the walls it seems.

Hardware :: Airport Express As Wireless Extender For D-Link DIR-655?

Mar 30, 2010

I am a Windows user at the moment and plan to get a MBP in a few months. I am currently using a D-Link DIR-655 router. My house is a 2 story plus basement, and the D-link pretty much needs to be in the basement. We get excellent wifi reception in much of the house, but it is very spotty on the 2nd floor (an open to the first floor loft) and on the end of the first floor of the house opposite the router.

I like the idea of being able to use AirTunes, so I was thinking of buying an Airport Express as an extender to get usable reception throughout the house. I figure eventually, I may replace the D-Link with an Airport Extreme.

So can I do this wirelessly or do I have to wire the Express to the D-Link? Doing so would involve making holes in things that I don't want to make holes in, so I will put up with a spotty wifi network rather than getting an extender. Our house is a log home with hardwood floors and wood walls and ceilings throughout, so it is not as easy as patching some drywall if we decide to get rid of the wire/hole someday.

I am not a power user, not a gamer and if I want to download huge files, I can do so on the laptop in the basement. I just want a decent wireless connection throughout the house, and would like the ability to stream iTunes.

And if the Airport cannot be a repeater for the D-Link, what about the reverse, with the Airport as the base and the D-Link as the repeater?

Hardware :: Time Capsule (Base Station) / Airport Express (Range Extender) Setup

Mar 24, 2008

I picked up a Time Capsule 500GB and an AirPort Express 802.11n today. I am trying to setup my network as follows.
Time Capsule as base station
AirPort Express as as range extender

I would also like to set up the AirPort Express to use it's ethernet port to provide internet for my DirecTV HR20 HD DVR. I've currently got everything connected and running, and the HR20 gets an IP address, however, it says that there is no internet connection.

Hardware :: New AirPort Extreme Vs Old AirPort Extreme

Mar 3, 2009

Simple question: Of the new features in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station, which of these could become available to the old AirPort Extreme Base Station via a software/firmware update? I have to think that at least some of the new features don't actually require new hardware. Just trying to figure out if I want to shell out $179 for a new AEBS when my current AEBS works pretty well as it is.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

MacBook :: Extending Airport Extreme From Airport Time Capsule

Sep 11, 2014

I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty.  I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error.  Try again."  Well, tried again and still no luck.

Hardware :: Setting Up Airport Express Through Airport Extreme?

Mar 9, 2010

I currently have the apple extreme as my wireless router. It works great. I absolutely love it. I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.

My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.

Hardware :: Airport Utilities Can't Find My Airport Extreme

Jul 9, 2010

I have a Macbook (white unibody) running Snow Leopard. I have a personal wireless network using an Airport Extreme and I have an external hard drive (WD) connected to the Airport Extreme. I use this hard drive for my Time Machine Back ups.

I just got back from a trip and tried to back up my time machine. I got the error that the back up disk is not available. I then tried to open the airport utilities.

It tells me that "Airport Utilities is unable to find any Airport Wireless devices". I find this doubly strange because I have no problem connecting to the internet on this wireless network which supposedly does not exist.

Hardware :: 2nd Airport Extreme Not Seen In Airport Utility?

Apr 21, 2009

I bought the new airport extreme to extend the wifi range in my household and hoped to share a hdd. Upon my experience and reading the forums, the sharing hdd is not as easy as I thought. But that is not my issue at the moment.

My issue is with extending the network. A couple weeks of ago, I did the setup to connect the two airport extremes together (older round AE & new box AE) using aiport utility. It seemed to have work because the signal was stronger in a part of the house that usually had 0 to 1 bar.

But shortly after, the signal showed itself as inconsistent. The signal strenght is jumpy from 0 to full bars. And right now, I am sitting in a part of the house that used to have 0 bars and now, I get full bars. And yet my mbp cannot see the newer, closer in distance AE.

Hardware :: Airport Express Vs Airport Extreme

Feb 13, 2010

I am upgrading from a g wireless router to an n. I have a Belkin right now that I hate. Neither I, on a mac, nor my roommate, on a PC, can get a consistent connection on it. Needless to say it's going back and I want to get an express or an extreme. I had actually bought an Airport Extreme first and it was lightening fast, but I was told that the Express was just as fast, so I went to exchange. The guy at BestBuy told me the Belkin was cheaper and just as fast, so I bought it. I would really like this to be my last trip to the store for a router. Do I need to shell out for the Extreme or is the Express just as fast if all you need is an n router?

I used to be able to get a connection on the second floor (the router is in the basement, right where the old one always was) but now I can only connect at my kitchen table, one floor directly above the router. I can't even connect when I'm in the basement. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix this, if anything?

OS X :: How Do I Set Up The Airport Extreme With My DSL For Wireless?

Jul 6, 2009

I don't understand something very basic about the internet...

I have been using a 2WIRE wireless box plugged into my phone line/DSL for four years. I knocked it over and it doesn't seem like it is broadcasting a wireless signal anymore, so I bought an Airport Extreme Base Station, 2007 square model used.

I don't understand how to set it up... Can't I just throw away the 2WIRE thing now? When I try to use the Airport Extreme thing, it does not recognize the internet DSL signal or something.

I just want to use the Airport Extreme as a dsl wireless router alone.

I don't want the 2WIRE thing. The 2WIRE thing is usable when I plug my ethernet cord into it, but it is no longer broadcasing a wireless signal.

How do I set up the Airport Extreme with my DSL for wireless?

Sorry this is so stupid. I just don't understand what to do at all.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Wearing Out?

Sep 10, 2010

Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that my airport extreme's wireless signal has gone down. I bought it new in 2004, and it's always had a full signal everywhere in the house on multiple computers. Now the signal strength seems to be kinda random, somedays I'll have full signal and somedays it will drop to one 'bar'. I should note that it does have the latest firmware installed, and this happens on multiple computers new and old. So my question is if anybody has had this experience with airport extremes, particularly older ones?
