My BT Router is about, say 150M away, could I get a 100M Ethernet cable, plugged into the Router, going along the walls and then into another Router.
Then, from that Router have another 50M Ethernet cable going directly into my MacBook Pro?
So, like: ROUTER --100M-- 2nd ROUTER --50M-- MacBook Pro
Is this possible, or is 100M the end point? Can't go any further than that?
I am having trouble with my Time Capsule's wireless range. I am not a networking expert by any means. I own an old building that is 4 stories connected by stairs with thick walls.
All the rooms ethernet cables converge in a cubby on the 3rd floor. I placed my Time Capsule in the cubby, but I couldn't receive a wireless signal from the 1st floor. This is ironic because I have an old Netgear G router that sends signals throughout all 4 floors.
So I bought an Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly, but the signal has been unstable perhaps because the Time Capsule's wireless signal is too weak.
So I want to connect the Airport Express on the 1st floor using the Ethernet link from the 3rd floor Time Capsule which is my main router.
From my research, I discovered about WDS networks, which I believe you have to use in order to create a network with multiple Apple base stations linked through ethernet.
I called Applecare who told me:
-To connect from Time Capsule to Airport Express using Ethernet, must use WDS network. Setup Airport Express as Relay, NOT Remote.
-Relay- Direct ethernet connection from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then wireless connection from Airport Express to Macbook.
-Remote- Wireless signal from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then direct Ethernet connection from Airport Express to Macbook
I have several questions for you wise people out there:
1. To extend the Time Capsule wireless network using the Airport Express, but connected directly via ethernet, do I need to setup a WDS network?
2. I prefer to just use the simple Apple settings "extend network wirelessly". Will this setting only boost a wireless signal received from the Time Capsule? Can it not extend a wireless signal sent directly from Ethernet?
3. I'm considering getting a Quickertek Triband antenna to place outside the cubby. Anyone have any experience with Airport external antennas?:

I currently only get wireless in approx. half of my house, and the half in which I don't get it, will be needing it. So I am going to need to buy a range extender or wireless access point? I am a college student so I don't have a large budget, but I am looking for advice. Should I stick with Linksys and just buy one of their range extenders, or should I buy an Airport Extreme and hope the N signal is stronger? I am going to be sharing files soon when I get my Mac Mini HTPC setup going on in the living room to this from my other iMac's and MBP.

For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet.As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

I'm brand new to Mac. I just got a MacBook Pro, and I've been having some troubles connecting to the internet at home. I have a LinkSys WRT54GS router with Firmware Version: v1.50.9. I'm unable to access the internet through both ethernet and wireless. Concerning wireless, I have tried connecting using WEP, and have tried entering passcodes both with and without an "$" and "0x" preceding the 10 digit WEP passcode. I have also tried switching the encryption over to WPA2, and still nothing. I have even disabled the security to see if it's able to connect -- it's not. I had some error regarding not being able to find it's IP or something along those lines.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy macbook wont load any web pages. It is connected to my wifi network and it says my Internet connection is good under my network settings. All my other devices on the network have no issues (ipad2, 2-iPhone 4's and 2-PS3s). Also when I connect my MacBook to my router with an Ethernet cable it loads any and all web pages instantly. I also tried installing Firefox thinking it may have been an issue with safari. No luck there. The issue was intermittent at first and would require I restart my computer/router and then issue would be corrected. Now the internet wont load any pages at all. I also tried zapping the PRAM, flushing the DNS cache, removing files from the system config folder under Library/Preferences/system configuration and a few other things I can't exactly remember. My MacBook is up to date, my routers firmware is up to date. I even tried tethering my MacBook to my iPhone via wireless Internet and still could not load any websites.

I just got a new MacBook Pro, but my wife uses my old 1.25GHz Alum. PowerBook. My MB pro flies, but unfortunately, the wireless ethernet on my old PB is slow as hell. I've got 11+GB of free space left on my hard drive and Safari or Firefox are the only applications I have open. I also have a cable internet connection with wireless through my 1st Gen Airport Express, yet it's still slow.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently completely a wire pull from the network hub (Dell Power Connect?) in the office of a church, to a computer in a different room of the church. I plugged in the cat5e cable to the computer, it connects to the network, computers on the network can access it's public folders and remote access it, but the computer cannot browse the internet using the built-in ethernet plug. The wireless-internet on the computer allows me to navigate the internet just fine.
With the Airport turned off, and the ethernet plugged in, I can ping [URL] with 0% packet loss, but when I try to connect to google on Safari or Firefox it says that Safari/Firefox cannot connect to the server.
Can it? If it can, would Airtunes still work like normal.
In other words, can I be connected to my Airport EXTREME and Airtunes would still work since the Airport EXTREME and EXPRESS are using the same network wifi-name (the Express is just extending the Extreme's range).
When i try to extend my network with my Airport Express it creates another wireless network, wich is not what i want.
I have a Leve1 router as my main, connected to my modem.
My airport express is connected to the network with a CAT5 ethernet cable.
I use the setup in Aiport Utility and choose:
I Want Airport Express to join my current network ->
I want to connect AirPort Express to my network using Ethernet to extend my current netork or create a second network ->
I choose my network on the list and click continue ->
I want to connect AirPort Express to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network ->
And then it doenst join my network, but creates a new called Apple Network 00a133..
Am seriously considering the new AEBS but seems some confusion over whether the ports offer gigabit Ethernet, can someone with the router confirm or deny this? Also how is the range compared with similar N routers?

I have tried to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote and have the linksys as the main station, but it doesn't seem to be working. View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have the netgear router set with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 with DHCP enabled and no security set up (i originally had WEP enabled but this made the problem worse.
I then have two sitecom range extenders set up connected to the router wirelessly to extend the signal in opposite directions. One is set up with an IP address of 192.168.1.2 and the other 192.168.1.3 with default gateway set at 192.168.1.1 and DHCP disabled. This sets the network up working for a short time however as soon as more than one machine tries to connect to the network it all shuts down. It seems that the setup cannot assign IP addresses to more than machine at a time.
I'm lucky if I can get more than five feet away from my Linksys wireless-G router before the Airport Extreme says it's getting no bars. My son also has an Airport Extreme card in his iMac; connection is always iffy, even though his computer is barely four feet from the router.
Do I need a wireless-N router? Is there no backwards compatibility here (e.g. shouldn't a wireless-G router be able to work with wireless-N Airport Extreme cards?)
I have a 2006 Intel iMac (Running 10.6.1)that is not seeing my wireless routers (D-Link 628 and Time Capsule Dual-channel). The D-Link is downstairs. It is not in the best place, but at my only option. My Macbook Pro sees the D-link fine on the same desk as the iMac. I replaced the D-Link with the Time Capsule and the iMac doesn't even see that. If I bring it close (completely underneath the desk) to the iMac it will see both routers. The weird part is before a hard drive crash and replacement it worked fine (I know, I know something is amiss from the replacement).

The only problem is that my powerbook 12" has the hardest time picking up a signal, in fact I often have a hard time picking up wireless signals unless I'm right near them.
I realize this is one fault of the 12-banger, but it's almost as if mine sucks more than usual. Anyways, I know there is a way to extend the wireless capabilities. I've seen hacks where an antenna is actually soldered on, which is a route I would rather not take. If I had a windows machine there are several USB adapters to extend the range. Are there any of these that will work with a Mac?

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. this is a major problem for me. I just installed ubuntu on my mac via boot camp, and I can't find how to set up wireless internet! Once, after installing windows, the same problem occurred. I'm not sure whether this version doesn't support airport (ubuntu v10.04.1) or I need the snow leopard drivers (but I can't because it's a .exe file).
