Applications :: Time Machine To Airport Extreme Data Transfer Rate?

May 25, 2009

I am doing an initial back up for Time Machine. I've got 56Gigs worth of data to back up from my 2Ghz Uni Body MacBook (with 4gig of Ram & running OS 10.5.7). I have a newly purchased Airport Extreme base station to which is connected to a Western Digital 1 Gig External HD. I am getting a transfer rate of about 1 gig per hour. Is it really this slow? I am using a 5Ghz network to reduce interference and they are very close to each other.

I tried connecting the WD drive to the MB. After I switched off Virus Barrier V5 and stopped Spotlight indexing it was quite fast. However there didn't seem a way of tricking this backup to think it was done via Airport Extreme. How could this be done?

It looks like my MB is going to have to be left on and stay at home for the next couple of days!

Hardware :: Data Transfer Slow Speed Rate To Time Capsule

Apr 25, 2009

I did some experimenting this evening to assess data transfer rates to various storage items in my home network which uses a new Time Capsule as the router/hub.

Connected to the Time Capsule are the following:
- Mac Pro (GigE)
- Vista Machine (GigE)
- MBA (Wifi)
- Raptor Drive (USB 2)
- Time Capsule Drive (Internal)

Transferring a 650MB file between devices yielded the following results:
MP > Vista (GigE) = 288 Mbps
MP > MBA (5GHz) = 52 Mbps
MP > MBA (2.4GHz) = 43 Mbps
MP > Raptor (TC USB) = 38 Mbps
MP > TC Drive (Internal) = 38 Mbps
MBA (5GHz) > TC Drive (Internal) = 22 Mbps

It seems that transferring files to a USB drive or the internal drive on the Time Capsule is painfully slow. It took 2:20 to transfer the 650MB file to the Time Capsule over GigE vs. 0:20 seconds to another machine. What's worse, is that the data transfer speeds to the TC are a function of link speed, the slower your connection, the slower your transfer rates. It's not simply limited by some bottle-neck in the TC. It took 3:45 to transfer the same file to the TC from the MacBook Air over the 5GHz WiFi connection. When I complained about this the other day at the Apple store, the "Genius" said that it's due to QOS built into the router to ensure it doesn't kill my web browsing.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule/Airport Extreme With Verizon FIOS?

Nov 10, 2009

I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

Mac Pro :: Vista And Disk Data Transfer Rate

Mar 28, 2008

I just installed Vista on my Mac Pro (2.8 GHz Octo, 4 GB RAM, 8800 GT, 500 GB Caviar SE from WD) and I get 5.9's for everything but "Disk data transfer rate" - which is a 5.7. I know that is nothing to complain about, but I am just wondering what would earn a 5.9? Would it take a raptor to do that? Or just mine is not all that fast or something?

OS X :: Move Time Machine From Local To Airport Extreme?

Nov 3, 2009

I currently have my 1TB External Hard Drive for Time Machine hooked up locally to my iMac. I was thinking of freeing up a USB port by connecting it to my Apple Airport Extreme. When I searched about this I saw posts from a year or so ago that Time Machine would have to start over since it archives differently connected to Airport Extreme vs locally. Is this accurate? Should I just by a USB hub to give myself more ports or hook up the extra external drive for additional memory(like iTunes and iPhoto overflow) to the Airport Extreme?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme And Time Machine Over Ethernet?

Apr 27, 2010

Just got a new MacBook Pro, and I want to back it up wirelessly using Time Machine over my Airport Extreme Network. I've been doing this, in the past, with a smaller hard drive connected to the USB port on the AEBS, but need to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. Is there any speed benefit from getting a hard drive with ethernet capability, and attaching it right into the ethernet port on the AEBS, and if so can I back up with Time Machine wirelessly using this configuration? My AEBS is the first gen of the 'n' version that came out, but is gigabit ethernet, if that matters.

Hardware :: Hard Drive For Airport Extreme And Time Machine

May 7, 2010

I realise this has been asked before, though as you can understand I'm looking for updated info - hence the new thread. I'm looking to purchase a hard drive to attach to my Airport Extreme (first version of their n wireless model, a couple of years old) in order to gain a hard drive that I can back up my MacBook Pro to wirelessly via Time Machine. I know that Apple says that I should be able to buy a USB drive and attach it and it would 'just work', but recently I purchased an Iomega Prestige 1.5TB and tried it, but it was not recognised / would not mount when I attached it to the Airport Extreme - despite having followed all the instructions to reformat it before trying. Since then I discovered that many others had encountered the same problem with that particular drive. I'm wondering what your advice would be as to what drive I should purchase to achieve my goal? I understand that a NAS drive could be a possibility - in addition to SOME USB drives. I suppose I'd like to try and keep the price down - 90-150 if possible, which is why I'm not, at present, considering a Time Capsule (in addition to the fact that I already have the Airport Extreme).

Power Mac G5 :: LaCie External Drive - Slow Data Transfer Rate

Nov 5, 2007

I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.

Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

OS X :: Data Transfer - Using Time Machine As Backup Tool

Mar 13, 2009

I'm getting a new macbook. Currently I use time machine as a backup tool and was wondering if I should use it to transfer all my data to the new mac. One benefit of a new harddrive is the fresh install without all the junk that has built up over the years right? So wouldn't time machine just be transferring all the junk and stuff I want to the new mac? or is time machine smarter than this.

Hardware :: Connecting Partitioned Drive To Airport Extreme For Time Machine?

Reading through the forums I haven't got a clear picture on whether this idea will work, so I was hoping someone could clear it up for me. It seems to have been clouded by people having problems with Airport-connected drives in Snow Leopard.I want to partition a hard drive and connect it through USB to an Airport Extreme. Then I want to use each partition as separate Time Machine backups for my iMac and MacBook.1. If connecting a partitioned hard drive, will all partitions be accessible through Airport Extreme?2. Can I use partitions connected in this way as Time Machine backups?3. Will there be problems if both my iMac and MacBook try to backup to the Time Machines at the same time?

Hardware :: New Time Machine / AirPort Extreme And MobileMe Feature: Personal File Server

Mar 3, 2009

It appears there is a new Time Machine feature that isn't getting a lot of attention just yet. From Apple:

Access your drive over the Internet.

Say youre traveling and you need a file on your Time Capsule back at home. If youre a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard, no problem. You can now access all the files on your Time Capsule drive over the Internet. Simply register your Time Capsule with your MobileMe account, and its drive appears in the Finder sidebar of your Mac just like any other attached drive. Its like having your own personal file server wherever you go.

I wasn't able to find any reference to this new feature in the updated Time Capsule Setup Guide.

I hope this feature is compatible with the previous generation Time Machine via update.

UPDATE 1

This feature is also supported by the new AirPort Extreme. From Apple:

Access your drive over the Internet.

Say youre traveling and you need a file on the hard drive connected to your AirPort Extreme back at home. If youre a MobileMe member using Mac OS X Leopard, no problem. You can now access all the files on your shared drive over the Internet. Simply register your AirPort Extreme with your MobileMe account, and your drive appears in your Finder sidebar just like any other attached drive. Its like having your own personal file server wherever you go.

UPDATE 2

I found instructions for setting up Back to My Mac on an AirPort network in AirPort Utility 5.4.1 (See attached image.)

UPDATE 3

The following updates should also be available in Software Update:

AirPort Utility 5.4.1 for Mac OS X 10.4 or later

AirPort Utility 5.4.1 for Windows

AirPort Client Update 2009-001 for Mac OS X 10.5.6

About AirPort Client Update 2009-001 This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.5.6.

It addresses issues with roaming and network selection in dual-band environments.

UPDATE 4

The Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.4.1 is now available via the AirPort Utility application.

MacBook :: Extending Airport Extreme From Airport Time Capsule

I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty.  I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error.  Try again."  Well, tried again and still no luck.

Hardware :: Average Transfer Speeds To Airport Extreme USB HD

Jun 6, 2009

I recently acquired an Airport Extreme Base Station. Its the previous generation - i.e. the one that does not have the dual band technology. I am getting extremely poor upload speeds to this drive while trying to backup (using time machine) or transferring even small files. Generally the transfer speeds are less than 1 mb/sec. Is this normal? I was under the impression that under wireless N, these transfer speeds would be much faster. I am literally within 5 feet of the router.

Applications :: How Long Would Full Backup Of 900GB Of Data Take Using Time Machine

May 12, 2010

How long would it take to backup 900GB of data doing a full back-up using TimeMachine and my MacBook? My MacBook being a 2009 model with 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I have:
1 x MacBook 160GB drive
1 x Imoega minimax 500GB drive (firewire or USB 2 connection possible)
1 x Seagate 320GB drive (USB 2 only connection)

I have a 400 firewire port in my MacBook in addition to 2 USB sockets, as well as fireWire hub with power supply, should I wish to run 2 or more firewire devices at once, into the 400 firewire port.

My current backup drive is a Samsung USB2 1TB drive but for reasons that will hopefully become obvious below, I will need to purchase a new drive. I think a 1.5TB or 2TB would be fine and I guess a 400 firewire port is still better than USB2, even though it's only 400. However I'm not sure about the time issue.................
