now having switched to Leopard, I bought an external hard drive in order to use time machine. Unfortunately, every time the hard disk is touched (once per hour for the backup and still once per hour for a reason I do not know -- and every time I turn my mac on --), the hard disk stays spinning noisily for 15 minutes. could change the hdd sleep timing settings. I would like to set it to 5 minutes or so.
I am moving over from Outlook 2011 for Mac at last! Annoying in mail (and something in Outlook), can you change unread timing when you click it within mail itself? There are extensions [URL] but I wonder in 4.5 whether you can do this?
Q1: how can I delay printing? This was possible in OS9.
I have a thermal printer wich permits me to change the ribbon (Black, CMY, CMYK). If I have a mixed type of files to print, I'd put on hold (in the "print" window) the files that requires the unloaded ribbon while waiting for the other to print.
Of course, I can print all the CMYK, wait until it's done then print the B/W ones but I don't find it practical. Or I can also rush to the print center and hope to have the time to suspend manualy the ones that need it.
Q2: Once a printer is created, how can I change the associated ppd? This also was possible with OS9.
Q3: It is possible to change the printer name once it is created?
I'm new to the forum, but not necessarily new to Apple. I have a aluminum MacBook and have it connected via display port to a Dell monitor (have a cinema display on order from macmall due in tomorrow!). My question is while I have the MB connected to the display, is there a way I can have the laptop lid closed and prevent the computer from going to sleep?
basicly i got i movie 3 and i got a easy hardware set up. i plug my microphone into a audio interface and set it to the audio interface output and i can hear myself clearly.. but it only comes out the left speakers. is there any way to pan or change the setting so it comes out both speakers?

Trying changing the ownership of a MacBook Air. I've wiped everything from it, but would like to basically set it as a new Air again, so the "Welcome" Screen comes on for the new owner.
My Word 2008 (Mac) shows two pages side by side instead of one on print layout view. The default is one page and you have to scroll down to go to the second page, but mine is side by side. I don't know what settings I have changed, but I have been searching to get this fixed, but was unsuccessful.
How can I change my incoming server settings in icloud? the incoming setting is "greyed-out" and suddenly changed overnight so I can't access my mail.
I need Java to run an application on a website. I downloaded and installed it but now I get this message: Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running.
How do I change this. I tried under System Preferences - Security and Privacy but didn't see anything there ....
For example; Numbers keeps opening downloaded files intended for Quicken. I can change the program to open the download, but I can't find a way to make the change be the default.
Is there any way that the default stack memory limit for a user in Mac OS X Lion? You can you ulimit in Terminal.app to display information, you cannot change any values.Â
This is what is returned from ulimit when you try to change the stack memory size.Â
user@MacbookPro:~$ ulimit -s 81920
-bash: ulimit: stack size: cannot modify limit: Operation not permittedÂ
Also, the default value is 8192KB which is approx. 8MB. That is weak, especially on my 2011 iMac with 16GB of RAM. I mainly do scientific programming on my Mac (Fortran). These programs usually require a larger stack size. One option is to allocate data to the heap but that is very slow.Â
Well for the last year I have been having problems with my DSL Internet, everyone once in a while (it accually happened when I was typing this post ), the internet will just go out, I will get no response and the internet light on my modem with go out, when it goes out it stays out for about 28 seconds, most of the time its about 28 seconds exactly but sometimes it can go out for 10 seconds and other times I can go out for a few mins.
I really don't know what to do, I got Verizon to send me a new modem, I replaced all my filters, and I replaced the phone line into the modem. I called Verizon but I can't recreate the problem for them so they won't send anyone out, last time I called them the girl on the line said it would be a good idea to send someone out then asked me if I had any other problems then hung up .
Do you guys have any ideas about what could be causing this?
I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?
I am unable to access a medical website I go to for diabetes monitoring. I have had this problem before. When I access the site the java icon displays and is cycling, then times out. I checked for Macbook updates last evening and installed updates. I searched for Java for Mac 10.6 and installed that. Tonight I figured out how to clear my java cache. Still cannot access the site. I've spent probably 6 hours trying to figure this out - no luck. I had exact same issue in November and was able to fix it by reinstalling Java.
I tried searching but this particular problem doesn't seem to be addressed.
OK, when I leave my computer, I either put it to sleep or let it go to sleep on its own.
My sister-in-law is down for an extended visit and I am letting her use my Mac. I, the administrator, made a new user for her. When she wakes the computer, it shows my name. It doesn't show the other users. If she types in her name in place of mine and her password it doesn't work. Just says wrong password or user name. I've triple checked that they are correct and tried to change users myself.
On startup the WiFi connection symbol initially is full and black and then goes grey with in a few seconds. If I click the WiFi symbol the drop down menu shows my WiFi network which I click put in WEP code but then I get a message after a few seconds that the connection has timed out. All other Macs in the house connect to the WiFi fine.
I am a web designer, I got my first mac a few months ago and its a lot easier to get my work done now! I register my domain names via Godaddy.com and things have been fine until a few weeks ago, I started work on 2 new websites at 10am this morning, it is now 16:04 and I still have not managed to register the domains! The godaddy website keeps timing out, it works fine on my partners windows laptop, but it times out nearly every time on my Mac Mini, this is both on Firefox and safari.
Normally if I restart my mac and it will let me register the domains after a few refreshing of the pages. Or sometimes when it keeps timing out in firefox I try in safari and it works for a bit. But today neither of them are working, I got right to the payment page and it wont let me go any further, it just keeps timing out on me. I have cleared my cache a few times and that hasn't made a difference.
So from what I understand my 2 month old MBP is supposed to have a 10 hour battery which is a stretch! I would say 5 hour battery at best, which is great and I am not complaining but 10 hour eh? Is that while the computer is sleeping?
Is there a way to set preferences for the main login window so that a screensaver will start after a certain number of idle minutes? How to set those preferences.Â
I don't really care which screensaver. I just want to be able to set a time-period preference.Â
1.) Download Image from [URL] 2.) Save it to computer and then open it up in Photoshop 3.) From there please apply a 'radial blur' with the settings at:
Amount = 100 Blur Method = Spin Quality = Best
Using a stop watch / ps timer see how long it takes to apply this filter. I just want to see what mac systems can do, be it a powermac dual 2.7 or an older dual 1.8 or even an ibook. Please list your mac system, cpu details, amount of ram and the time it took for the test, just so we can get an idea of how different mac machines handle this task.
I have a D-link router with cable internet, two MacBooks that are constantly running up against the wifi dropping out (>< * and at the most inconvenient times!). A couple months ago I managed to limit the router to one channel and it seemed to fix the problem to a degree. Its become increasingly problematic recently and I folded the last pair of Kings because of a crappy wifi link up. After looking around a bit I think I may be able to finally put to use the Airport Express I bought back in 2005 as one writer commented that the installation of that would fix the drop outs.
I'm having a periodic problem where my network will timeout. Once that happens, I'm unable to connect to the network again by choosing the network. When I run the diagnostic, only the Wi-fi light is green. If I use the assistance, it tells me the password is incorrect even when I know it's correct. I will always connect for a second or two before timing out or being told the password is incorrect. If I purposefully type the password wrong, I'm immediately told it's wrong without the hesitation of connecting for a second. Does anyone have any ideas of what is going on? I eventually get connected but only after going through a laborious process of either created a new network or deleted all the Wi-fi information. Even then, the process is temporary.
where the *#$& does one change this setting? Right now, if I close the laptop, it goes to sleep. This is bad - for presentations, running iTunes at home... But I can not find where to change this - I've been through every section of Pref's.
I've an Internet key (settings requested: phone number/web address/primary DNS): I put only the first 2 because with the third one (needed to speed up the connection) it doesn't works. I put the primary DNS requested on MACUSBmodem (DNS page, on the left).
I have added a language under the first tab, Language, only to find that there is no correspondingly supported input option under the fourth tab, Input Sources.
I would now like to remove the entry I added under the first tab, Langauge, but cannot figure out how to do this. I have tried highlighting and pressing delete, dragging it out of the window, etc., but so far nothing works.
